<div class="IPBDescription">For the love of god please help!</div> So I seem to have some problems with DX (I am guessing this is it, though I honestly don't know)

Signs and Symptomes:
When ever I try to play WC3:TFT the game freezes my computer (needs a hard reboot) (I borowed the game from my housemate, so I have not tested WC3 yet, as he is using the CD). Yes I tried a few illiegal meathods of getting WC3 to work, but that was so that we could play each other on a LAN, however even with the real Disk in the drive I get this.

SystemShock 2 also freeze like this.

When ever I try to run the dxdiag tests that full scrn it freezes my computer.

GTA:VC does it

My system is uptodate on all drivers

SysSpecs:
Windows 2K (updated)
abit MoBo (not sure type, but I have the latest via 4 in 1 drivers for it)
GeForce4TI 4200. Drivers updated.
SBLive sound card. Drivers updated.
AMD 1.1 gig.
512 of ram.

Notes:
I Can run HL fine
I can run CoH with no problems
As those are my primary games atm, those are what I know.

I am mainly trying to be able to play WC3 and SS2

There is a problem with some Gforce cards in System Shock 2.

Try www.ttlg.com in the system shock 2 discussion board, everything can be found that fixes ss2.

Well, I found a fix to the System Shock 2 problem.

However It the promptly gave me a good 'ol system lock up when I actualy started playing.

So now SS2 has the same problem that WC3 and the DXDiag tool has.

    any one?

    please?

ok, upon more fiddiling it turns out that a good number of programs that go full scrn lock my computer.

    Things that will lock:
    WC3
    GTA:VC
Some of the DXDiag tests (only those that go full scrn)

    Things that don't:
    CoH
    ZSnes
    HL

The only thing that I can think I might have changed BEFORE this happened would be me updating my vidoe drivers (I honestly can't remember if I updated them in response to this problem or before I knowticed it.....)

    Try this:
    <ul><li> Uninstall your video drivers</li><li> Run <a href='http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/' target='_blank'>Driver Cleaner</a> to completely clean any leftover driver files.</li><li> Reinstall <a href='http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=A6DEE0DB-DCCE-43EA-87BB-7C7E1FD1EAA2&displaylang=en' target='_blank'>DirectX</a></li><li> Reinstall video drivers</li></ul>

Do you get artifacts on the screen, when your computer freezes? Because I get the same thing, although I suspect my sound card (don't ask). Sometimes, the artifacts will appear on the screen, covering it completely, or just taking a small part of it, while other times, it'll just lock up... >_<

That sounds like a heating problem, Jssmfulhud. Try cleaning your fans out with a can of compressed air and/or adding more. If that fails, try taking the case cover off and pointing a desk fan at the case. (You can get these minifans at dollar stores, too. Try one of those, pointed at the video card.)

[EDIT] You could also try downclocking your video card to reduce heat generation.

Ah, that'd be too easy, CF. No.. My computers have the curse of the lockup. Honestly, every graphics card, new and original at that, had problems with lockups. It wasn't and isn't the heating on the CPU or the graphics card, nor is it any driver incompatibility.

The strange thing is... When I reboot a few times, after the lockups, the computer will start running smoothly for hours and hours. Yay........ <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

EDIT: Oh and the sound 'card' may be the problem, since it's an emulated on-board one ... And I think it's making all the trouble, as strange as it sounds.

And I don't want to hijack the topic...

I get it myself. I'm kind of stuck with games that run in windowed mode now. Any game that goes full screen has a high chance of the computer locking up, unless I'm running it pretty much as soon as I log onto my user account. Annoying, but it doesn't bother me too much...I like being able to multitask, which windowed games let me do.

Deus Ex = hell to play in windowed mode unless you ramp your system gamma...

Sometimes directx problems get solved by deinstalling direcx with
    directx buster
    <a href='http://www.dxbuster.de/index_e.html' target='_blank'>http://www.dxbuster.de/index_e.html</a>
    rebooting and reinstalling.

nice tool to get rid of directx.

It happened to me once, except OpenGL wouldn't work either. Always make sure that you uninstall your drivers completely and reboot before installing new drivers. (Including any seperate control panel, if nVidia drivers come with one)
