Your Role Models

Past & Present, and they're effect
Friend of mine recently told me about a documentary he saw which talked about how boys were lagging behind so badly in school as opposed to girls.

One point that he mentioned was the shift in male role models. In past times, boys looked aspired to become figures like an astronaut, or the President. Looking at the media today, it looks like most people are intrigued with rock/rapstars, who give school the finger, and still make it big. Fighting the power seems to be more popular than ever. In juxtaposition, girls seem to have much more productive and positive role models, (although it does seem to be declining).

To be honest, I don't think I have any role models that I follow, which is why I'm thinking of HUNTING for one. I've been becoming more and more depressed and disillusioned by my career goals, which just seem to become more farfetched as I think about it. So while I was typing this, it came to my mind that want to read a biography (if any exists), on Shinkai Makoto, the lone creator of Voices of a Distant Star.

It gets depressing knowing that there's plenty of great ideas that animators have for animated films, but never have the chance to reach fruitation thanks to the damnable abomination of money. Instead of expressing THEIR ideas, they are instead restricted to doing contract animation for some rich corporation whose only interest is in a film series is that it yields profit, even if sacrificing creativity. What better way to break out of this shell than to just do it yourself? I find myself unable to break out of this confounded prison because of two realities: My drawing skills suck, and I have ****-poor willpower. I was hoping to address the former through an art course at the university I'm about to attend, but a course info earlier this evening shows that it covers a lot of things that I'm not exactly interested in (I want to study asthetics, plain and simple; I'm not currently interested in delving into deeper issues behind art). I'm guessing that I have to learn to some self-teach myself, but I have failed oh so many times already, I don't know how to begin to approach it. It would definitely be interesting to see how Mr. Makoto made it to where he currently is, (he's currently working on a new animation; my friend showed me a trailer for it, and it looks amazing. The fact that he does his projects solo is simply... )

I also want to look at the biographies of J.R.R. Tolkien, and Frank Herbert (just looked up Herbert on amiannoying.com right now: "He never graduated from college because he refused to take courses he disliked." - It's snippets like this that are inspiring for me. I want to see the influences and point of views that gave these two men the ability to come up with such a fantastic world, (especially given the fact that I'm in the process of designing a fantasy world for 'the story' that I'm working on). The added fact that Tolkien was a devout Christian is an added plus for me, in addition to the fact that he was friends with C.S. Lewis. (having loads of problems with my faith right now).

Other people that I'd like to be more like would include Jesus Christ (lots of things I need to self-improve on). While I'm not sure if I'd consider him a role model for me, Muhammad Ali is one kickass mofo., and I'd love to have just an ounce of his flamboyance and charisma, (strength would be an added plus).

So if ye not be timid to expose of thyselves personally, whom are thy role models, or perhaps you consider yourselves too 'cool' to imitate others? How so when ye were wee?

*DAMN IT! IT'S 'THEIR' EFFECT, NOT THEY ARE EFFECT, *****

My only role model is the utopian view of my future self. Which is entirely valid, because a goal of mine for the past 2 years has been to be a role model before I die.

I have no real role models. I have no drive or need to become some famous multimillionaire, all I want to do is live my life and hopefully not starve to death. And besides, even if I was going to become famous, most famous people out there today got where they are by incredible luck and/or incredible skill neither of which I have. If I was to have a role model it would probably be some sort of great thinker, a sceintist or philosopher or something. But there is no point in trying to be like them, I have no amazing new ideas, there is no way I could live off my thoughts. It's better to just live my life the way I know I can than to waste my time with dreams abotu being someone else.

That's just my own cynical view on things.

The whole human society is based on combined learning, knowledge, experience.. This is how we manage to build wonders.. the pyramids, cities, entire civilisations. based on the premise that knowledge gained from the past generations, will still be used in the future, built upon, expanded upon.

the same premise works with your individual as well.. role models show people how to act, give them something to strive for, teach them what kinds of people to be. doing things your own way is great, but then your life, your time, your effort is wasted, unless you get this passed onto you, and you in turn pass that, and more, onto the ages.

If we did not pass humanity and it's achievements on, every person in humanity would still be inwardly trying to conquer fire, and rock spears.

    My role model? Humanity.

I'm with AllUrHive on this one. I don't really care much for models, I try to reach my own goal. To get the education, to get a fair job, to move and so on...

If I'll reach my goals, I'll be as happy as a millionaire.

    i got a few...

people who like earn theyre stuff... like and i know this will cause stupidity from retards who cant deal with it.. but Eminem... he broke into an industry totally untapped by 'white' people... and now he is the most dominant out there...

imo he raps and he means it.. most people talk about poppin gats... he does that in some songs just to sell.. who wouldnt? but songs like Hailie's song, and a fair few others really come from the guuys heart..

if you dont like my role model.. you dont have to.. just dont comment.

also people of great physical power... and like prowess... im a big guy and its nice in the summer to be able to like take my top off... and know that people are thinkin ' cool he's buffed' it is something i take great pride in...

    so yeah

Frank Herbert didn't graduate because he didn't take courses he didn't like? Sounds a bit like not following laws you don't like.

Unfortunately for me, I discovered at a young age that I was one of those gifted children, with a special talent. I was a master follower. Yup - destined for great things, as long as those who I was following were too.

Luckily I recognised it - took a step back and had a hard look at the tards I was following. Deciding they werent worth it, I went hunting for something else to follow. Managed to twist my following onto the religious path, but never quite pulled it off. Still, been here ever since an its working for me.

Also heavy influencers were any adult I decided was mature and had it together. I figured out early that all the decent, collected adults I knew werent into drugs, wild booze-ups or whor1ng it up, so I followed that example as well.

I have harsh personal expectations of myself - and consistently fail to live up to them.

Now ur all jealous aint yahs

My role model is G.W. Bush. You might surprised by this but you really shouldn't. He is a great reminder of something I never want to become

I'll now spoil everyones fun by taking the whole thing too seriously. Ah well, somebody's got to do it.

I'm not sure whether to call them role models, but there are a number of people whoms lives and achievements I deeply admire and whoms actions I, while aware that I couldn't hope to match them, try to do justice.

There's Kurt Tucholsky, the in my opinion finest German-speaking author of the 20th century, whom I admire for his outstanding prose, his deep irony and wit, and his outstandingly sharp political and sociological observance.
There's Thomas Paine, one of the firmest believers in humanitys redeeming qualities and best rethorics history has recorded.
There's, above all else, Mahatma Ghandi, who lived an ideal of a life.

I guess it says something about myself that of the three role models I can immediately think of, two were murdered and one committed suicide.

The male stupification in schools is something real, i've seen it myself.

The top 10 people in my class were 9 girls and 1 guy, and only 1 more guy was contained in the top 20.

Both #1 and #2 in class were girls (who gave ****-ugly speeches, btw) and I think it's just because guys don't care... I know I didn't.

i had a ton when i was younger. now i'm older more grizzled, and perhaps less idealistic. but here are a few:

Martin Luther King (the civil rights activist) -listen to any of his speeches, or his writing, amazing stuff.

Gandhi - walk a few hundred (thousand?) miles to make salt on the beach just to prove a point? yeah, you own

Jesus - yeah, ok, not Christian, but some of the ideals of compassion and such are pretty profound.

Mother Theresa - helping the sick and dying of the POOREST of the poor die with dignity, winner

Sir Isaac Newton - inventor of a whole new branch of mathematics.

Edison - the Bill Gates of inventors (and by that i mean ruthless and intelligent)

JRR Tolkien - shaping and establishing an entire genre of literature.

Sidney Poitier - came from dirt poor background to become a real African American hollywood star, was the first, IIRC, to get roles that could have been played by EITHER white or black actors.

ANYONE in the Civil Disobedience Movement in the US and India - walking up to a guy who's about to BASH in your skull with a nightstick or sick some dogs on you, and thinking "jesus loves you too", that's hardcore.

Jimmy Carter - probably one of the most humane presidents we've ever had, imho.

Michael Jordon - master of all aspects of being a sports star, both commercial and on the court.

er, i have some more, lemme think about it.
