edit* the movie seemed to leave out a parts to. i havent read the books or anything, but when it showed that guy that was an atreides who was captured by the harkonnen, and they gave him a cat, he was not mentioned at all. and the daughter of the emporer wasnt in it at all.

Probably DVD Content, they always cram that stuff in to say things like "22 HOURS LONG!"

    quote from the box

    total running time 265.

    265minutes = 4 hours 42 minutes.

"some guy stars in this four-hours, epic presentation of frank herberts visionary masterpiece of galaxy spanning intrigue and adventure. in the blah blah blah movie discribage."

on the special features there is a 25 minute behind the scenese, and "the cinematographic ideation of frank herbert's dune" which is an interective written treatise by some guy, and exclusive cast and crew information.

edit* this is a 2 disc thing, but there was only 1 in the case (used dvd) but the guy at the counter said it was just a soundtrack.

Why'd you buy that awful movie?

You want a Dune saga, go get the SciFi miniseries version, its magnificent. The Children of Dune miniseries was also pretty good, I'd recommend it, too.

There were a couple versions, even of the old movie. I think you got jipped when you bought it used and got a completely different disc than the ones that came with it.

Yeah, even as a gamestop employee, the organization on used movies is extremely frustrating. That's the only item I don't buy there, with the exception of a Happy Tree Friends DVD we got in the shipment the other day. We get about 5 versions of any given movie, but they are all entered into the system the same way and cost the same, so there's no quick reference to what goes with what.

So yes, I currently work for GameStop (for all of about another 7 days), but I feel for you. I try to do my part to keep those things straight if it makes any difference

You could... pay off the remaining balance on a version of Beyond Good and Evil, maybe...

Freedom Fighters for PC is 9.99 as well, and still active.

id like to have the full 4 hours movie..

Silly actually wanting what you intended to buy...

Ok. Ask them to check through all the DVD guts to see if they have the one that corresponds to that particular case advertising the 4 hour length. Probably your best bet, and hopefully it'd still be there, but there's no guarantee on matched pairs staying there long. However, I think if they're willing to swap it out, they should at least be willing to also see if they have the disc you thought you were buying.

I assume you tried flipping the DVD over... or is the other side printed on/just the other format?

I forget if I saw that movie, but I think I did and I think I liked it... the book was better of course...

    other side is printed on.

also in the case guide i just saw something, there is 3 episodes of chapters, the first episode has 19 chapters, the second has 23, and the third has 24. i remember when the credits came on i hit forward chapter, just to see if maybe there was more movie after the credits, and i believe it said there were 17 chapters.

so can anyone confirm the fact that there were multiple versions of this movie?

It's one of those urban myth type things that Lynch shot a very long movie and had it cut down. Truth be told, no such long movie was ever made, as Lynch has himself said many times. There were a couple of "extended edition" releases, but they just added maybe a couple of scenes.

If you have a four-and-a-bit hour version, I would wonder if you actually bought the miniseries, but with the movie disc in the box. I don't know what the packaging for them is like outside the UK though, so they might not be easily confused.

IMDB to the rescue! Note especially the last bullet in the list. It appears that even the longest versions of Dune are only 190min in lenght.

so does that mean the case has errors or what?

That box is for the miniseries version.

Yeah. Note the year 2000 and the words "Scifi Channel". Those don't exactly fit the bill for the original Lynch Dune. If you're wondering about "missing scenes", don't worry - that's what the movie truly looks like. That's just what happens when you cram a book the size of Bible into a film originally cut to be just about over two hours. The so-called additional material in the longer versions is just an extended intro, stuff picked from the editing room floor and a couple scenes presented many times in the course of the film. The progression of the movie is indeed jerky and too fast to be an enjoyable experience. It's no wonder David Lynch disowned it.

When I said that Dune had multiple versions. I meant that besides the miniseries and the 1984 version. Someone made another version that I saw on the sci-fi channel (and NO, I swear it wasn't the miniseries, I saw both of them).

Apparently there's one made in 1973, that must have been the other one I saw.

There's a pretty crappy version which was for TV, I believe its a few hours long, has badly edited scenes (rehashing other footage) has a different start with a man doing a voiceover about the Butlerian Jihad, etc etc.

The DVD/UK TV version is shorter but longer than the theatrical version. Starts with the Princess narrating, ends with rainfall. Its what you'll get if you buy the COLLECTOR'S EDITION 20th anniversary 2 disc pack.

Then there's the THEATRICAL release, which AFAIK is the shortest.

Anything other than that, I dunno.
