Movies To Rent...

...anime is of particular interest
So, I was checking out my cool 'Family Video' around here, and was getting some movies (notably at this point "Escape from L.A."), when I noticed that there was Escaflowne (or something like that) part 2 next to what I was looking around at.

Well, I've never seen any of Escaflowne, and they only had part 2 there. So I've come to the forums for cool anime finding...ness.

There's a distinct lack of anime videos around here (and considering I just opened my Family Video member ship and I get 50% off of stuff for 30 days, I'm going to stick with just FV for now. I can never remember any cool movies or anything, so I figured I'd ask around over here.

First things first: I think I've heard Escaflowne is good/nice, but they only had the 2nd...something there, no first - so should I just pass on it unless I've got the first one? [50% off of 1 dollar for a week long VHS rental, heh]

Next: Are there any fairly popular anime movie/season releases? I got Cowboy Bebop: The Movie a bit ago, that was pretty good - gonna have to buy it from Best Buy sooner or later. Not sure how in-depth they go. I know the blockbuster around here used to have a decent selection, but that was before I really cared .
[although I've been looking for something like EYES of Mars ever since I saw it on the Sci-Fi channel, it seemed interesting - not at Family Video though]

[note: I've seen (that I recall at the moment) all of Trigun, NGE [The End of Evangelion (which I own) too - but not that other movie whose name escapes me], Love Hina; and some of Cowboy Bebop and Chobits; and tons of Inu Yasha (but there seems to be millions of episodes of that )]

[/needs Infinitum's anime collection]

Lastly: Any just-plain-cool movies around that I've been missing out on? Generally not looking for releases in the last 2-3 or 4 months. Tried looking around for Equilibrium (unless it has a front-title I'm missing) through their sections of DVDs and then VHSs seperated into Recent Releases, Favorites, Classics and Alphabetic listings I might have missed it. (and Children's...which is free)

I'm thinking some kung fu movies might need to be tested, don't think I've ever seen a full one. War movies would be nice too, but I own or have seen quite a few of them.

...Wootage for half-off rentals!

Don't mind bad acting, bad plot, bad everything, just INCREDIBLE FIGHTING?

    Ong-Bak

Heck, if you want, I can give you the times you want to fast-forward, cause everything else pretty much sucks.

I'm not the ultra anime nut most people are, so chances are you'll like the stuff I like as I'm ultra picky:

    - Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Its not out yet, but the first disc is coming out in like a month! HOORAY!
    - Berserk
    - Hellsing
    - Outlaw Star (kinda similar to Cowboy Bebop)

As far as regular movies to watch, you're not a complete person until you've seen these classics:
    - Full Metal Jacket
    - A Clockwork Orange
    - Dr. Strangelove

I could also name a jillion more but that'd turn it into a spam thread so I'll stop. :P

    anime:
Hayao Miyazaki and/or Studio Ghibli movies.

Mononoke Hime, Spirited Away, Laputa, My Neighbor Totoro...
I think that's all that have been dubbed and released by Disney so far.

    regular movies:
    Seven Samurai (Akira Kurosawa)

If your in an area that is nearly devoid of anime, your best off sticking to the 'classics'. Series that are either extremely popular or fanboyed to death will generally be seen somewhere in your local video store.

    Movies:
    Akira
    Ninja Scroll
    Ghost in the Shell
Animatrix (Probably an easy find due to Matrix fanboyism)

    Series:
    Evangelion
    Cowboy Bebop
    Trigun
Rurouni Kenshin (Slightly less 'popular', so a harder find)

Those are roughly your basics... most video stores should stock at least a few of those, even if they have no concept of the term anime... Don't go in looking for any Studio Ghibli stuff, because you will be mostly disappointed. Spirited Away is about as good as you'll find.

If you find a store that stocks nothing but anime, come back to me and I'll get you to hire a few of the classics.

    Spriggan was...

    Interesting...

Though the villian could've been a LITTLE more dangerous-looking, it was interesting.

You haven't lived anime before you saw Jin-Roh.
Jin-Roh is the most amazing story i have seen in an anime, based on Lil' Red Riding Hood (don't worry it's everything else than childish).

Another anime that impressed me that way was the sadest story told in the anime history... Grave Of The Fireflies.
Man that brings the whole "glory" of the war to it's base

And of course Spirited Away, it made me smile again after i watched Grave Of The Fireflies. It is so NEW, everything i saw in this anime was new to me in the way it has been made, stunning.

Note: Grave Of The Fireflies and Spirited Away are Studio Ghibli productions.

    and Nausicaa?

Seriously, try looking for Hayao Miyazaki. His animes tend to be good, and sometimes violent (Mononoke Hime anyone?)

But yeah, other animes well...I'm a bit blind on the subject, but if you're into serious anime without any humor, go for Ghost In The Shell : Stand Alone Complex.

If you're in for humor, go for FLCL (omg wth really weird anime....I DO mean weird, think way beyond japan crazy)

Well, Spriggan is also worth watching if you haven't watched anime yet, but I doubt that.

As for series you'll like to watch....Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun and Fullmetal Alchemist are good. Just beware of the craptasticular dubs FUnimation has done to FMA.

Well, I would suggest Naruto, but people would kill me here if I....wait....I did =_____________=

Bah! Hong Kong and its lack of anime....and its near Japan too....

It's apparently a case of 'love it or hate it'. Not that I have actually seen it, mind you.

Pompoko and tonarinoYamadakun (i think they translated as "My neighbours the Yamada") are really great to see. I love Pompoko to be honest.

Naruto is a lot of fun, but beyond the first two or three story arcs, the novelty may wear off if you watch them too fast. The best way to preserve it may be to slow down on the rate at which you watch them.

As for classics, I think INF forgot that Studio Ghibli got 3 great movies out not just the one.

Princess Mononoke - Dub is good
Spirited Away - Dub is good
Graveyard of the Fireflies - Only Subtitled.

    So I suggest those certainly.
Also I suggest Planetes if you like sweet, light hearted and and practically PG anime. Be warned it is a Romance Comedy, so there is minimal action as far as fighting and such, but it does happen every once in a while.

    ---------
    OGM!11 I just realized.
However whether you won't find that series for rent, nor will you find Naruto for rent, so get those online. (irc.rizon.net - #anbuDOM - use XDCC and get it from an anbu bot (+anbu|winry))

That's an understatement. Neil Gaiman, pretty much one of the greatest English-writing authors alive, was involved in the translation, and well, it shows.

Unfortunately, my cool half-off new membership thingy ended about a week ago....So I can't really rent tons of movies anymore.

...Aside from that, they had Spirited Away, aside from that...well, they've got animes I've still never heard of in this thread and pretty much none of the ones I' have.

The only anime on DVD is Dragonball Z (...yea, let me get right on that...), Cowboy Bebop: The Movie and Spirited Away. I think there's a Princess Mononoke on tape, but it's the second episode or something (...maybe it was a different anime)...which I think I asked about in the first post.

Unfortunately, I'm not in a larger city with a better selection. I don't even thing they had Dr. Strangelove (or any of those other non-animated movies). Though...they do have Event Horizion...I just happen to have it on tape already.

The problem with Family Video probably lies in the fact most of their selection is still VHS (good games selection though). Hollywood Video is the best in the area for actual movies...I should probably look over there one of these days.

To reply to the original intent of this movie: No Man's Land is a pretty good movie (the one revolving around the Serbian conflicts in the balkans). Reminds me; I should rent that one Giopolli movie (or whatever it was).

On another note: How did you pick this thread 19 days after the last post? What's up with that?

The other Evangelion movie is "Death and Rebirth"- basically the intro to EoE combined with something that summarizes the entire series before that. Though it does the last 15 minutes of "Air" incredibly well- I found myself crying at the end of it. It wasn't done the same way as EoE.

I'd say Evangelion is the best out there- I've seen lots of anime, and while I don't claim to have seen as much as Inf, I've seen enough to know that for someone like me(a hardcore religionist) that Evangelion is the best out there. If you want generalized things that anyone could like, I'd reccommend Cowboy Bebop(best music EVAR.).

Other than that- Inf did a thread a while back ago about the "Best Ever" with anime. Just go through that.
