Chat Text

<div class="IPBDescription">must be lowered</div> Simple fix, and everyone knows about it:

Chat text displays at about the middle of the screen. This needs to stop, as big yellow letters obscure important events, like a fade rushing at you. Recode so that chat text appears at the normal place (ie just above the HUD health numbers).

    What res you using?

I use 1024x768 and I think the chat isnt in the way

You could bind a button to hud_chattext 0 and 1 so you can switch it on and off

Regardless of resolution, the text is always in the middle of the screen. This allows llamas to type long strings of meaningless crud and block out the area you're aiming at, if they really want to. It also blocks out some metamod functions, like map votes.

On a barely related note, the black bars that you get when spectating or dead block the 'normal' text chat entry areas. So that with various adminmod functions (like admin_chatmod or admin_saymode) you can't see what you're typing at all. Not exactly the devs job to be metamod compatible, but it is rather annoying, and this is the only mod that does that.

While it would be nice, I rarely run into this as I run a fairly high resoultion.

put in at the bottom or at top. NOT in middle !

yeah I'm running 1024x768 . doesn't matter what resolution you use, the text is always in the middle.

perhaps this has to do with the alien energy bar? if you notice, the chat text starts at the top of the energy meter...

theres a command to reduce the time it stays on the screen....that could help a bit...

yeah, I usually put saytext_time to 2, but I don't want to have to disable chat altoghether so that I can see.

hud_saytext_time 2 is the best way to go.

I have a quite old machine here, so I'm running NS in 800x600... and the chat can really be very annoying in the middle of the screen. "Deactivating" chat by setting the display time to 0 is no "fix" for this because you might miss important notices from teammates that have no voice com. Putting chat back to the lower part of the screen and maybe using a font that isn't so bold would really help imho.

    Word.

Reducing text time in a game based around team communication isn't really much of a fix TBH.

    Yep.

    Have a lookie <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=66818' target='_blank'>here</a>.

But still, when a LOT of talking is going on, the text is obstructing the view <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Better than nothing... combined with a low hud_saytext_time or whatever the command is, it is "ok".

    I also "vote" to have the chat text moved down a bit <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

It could be moved up a bit I think but I don't like the idea of it going all the way to the top or bottom. There are enough tards who completely ignore text chat in favor of listening to mics as it is. A lot of pub games are lost that way. It irritates me to no end when a commander isn't paying enough attention to the screen to notice text chat and misses important information from his marines, or when someone on text announces a hive attack a minute in advance and when the marines walk in with shotties someones says in the mic "QTF OUR HIVE IS DEAD WHY DIDNT ANY 1 WARN US?!?!111"
