Not So Techy Question For A Techy Person

E-machines are cool!!
So my friends owns an E-machine that he bought some time ago, the stats on it where good, for the price. But recently I noticed he's been getting very crappy FPS in his games. So I give him my old Radeon 9000, hoping that that'll make Morrowind run a little better. Now here's the problem. There's no slot for the card, I've never really ran into this problem, but I guess it's a problem that all E-machines have? Any way my question is, is there a way we can get a graphics card into a CPU that doesn't have the slot for it? Would he have to buy a whole new system just for a graphics card?

    E-machine

    googling....

    as I do that:

No you can't put in a card if you don't have the slot for it.

    You need a new MoBo

    googling done....

only thing I could find was:

I'm assuming you mean it has no AGP slot. No, if there's no AGP slot, you can't fit an AGP card into it. You'll need a new motherboard and processor. There's a reason those things are cheap.

However, if it has PCI slots, there are some older cards that are still made to fit PCI... stuff like GF2s. It should give better performance than the on-board crud though.

If I were you/him, I'd get one with express PCI & AGP.

e-machines are like the yugo of pre-made computers.

Although I must say they run better than yugos do/did - i have one that is five years old, and it's still going strong despite undergoing daily usage/gaming and only having a 125-W PSU hooked up to 3 drives and a burner.

but...the case construction and layout is rather bad, so you will most likely not be able to redesign/add components. So no switching out the motherboard for one with an AGP slot.

As Talesin said, PCI GF2 is probably your best bet.

*edit* or, alternatively he could put together a pretty damn good computer by yourself for $400-600.

Emachines = not good for anything related to gaming. You can build a very decent system yourself for the same price (or less, depending on the components you get). If you have a few hundred bucks, its better spent on a new system than a PCI Geforce 2. But yeah, PCI GF2 is better than the onboard stuff-that-comes-out-of-a-male-bovine's-rear-end.

    i used an e-machine...

there is no agp slot in them... you will either need to find a PCI graphics card, or get a new machine.

this problem is not present in Dell, Hewlit Packard, or Compaq pre-made machines... as i have used and/or upgraded each of those makes of machines.

also, f you were thinking of using parts from the e-machine here is a list that you can use:
    RAM
    PCI Cards
Hard Drive (you'll have to format)
    CPU

things you will NOT be able to use again
MOTHER BOARD: the power switching unit isn't on the board, and without the switch, which is permenatly embedded into the front of the machine, you will not be able to power the computer

POWER SUPPLY: they are built for a minimum cost, they will supply the needed items *only* (cdrom, floppy, 1-2 fans, and up to 2 hard drives, nothing more)

CD ROM / FLOPPY: these are made specfically for the case, and will not fit into any other machines.

E-machines are kind of like the Kia of Computers.

Without getting a new motherboard for an AGP slot I don't see much in the way of possibilites. Anyway good luck.

what's his processor? i have a pci card, the fx5200. it's practically the only pci card worth getting, the diamond s4 is the closest thing to it, and it sucks. nonetheless, you're gonna get pretty bad fps, even in ns. i personally get 50-60. nothing that will stop you from owning up everyone in quake 3 with 100 fps tho.

    He's got a 2.2 gig processor I believe.

Thanks for the response guys, I've talked him into making his own and using the scraps from the E-machine. Hopefully he'll be able to run FF11 and UT2004 now.. probably better than I can. :x

heh i had an emachines too but i got fed up with it since i could on have a Geforce 4 Mx 440. yea i just upgraded my whole computer

emachines everything is basically soddered together so they only work with eachother thats why they are so cheap as the best buy rep told me 3 years ago

you could get a 9200 se for $54 that is pci, or you could spend 50 dollars on a lower end mobo that has a agp slot, both would work.
