My Strange Feeling

Its really weird...read for details
I have no idea why but I am petrified to lose in RTS games. I have no problem with losing in NS, or any other FPS game. I am used to losing as I've been in some bad NS teams, and such, however I love games like WC3 and C&C Generals. I can't explain why but I'm just scared to play online against someone I don't even know. Any advice or comments? I feel like I bought these games and I am missing out big time on some big fun

Its called being protective of ones own ego

Either that, or that very special type of feeling you get from 'duelling' someone - having no team or backup to rely on. I definitely remember from my early days PvPing in even really lame MMOGs like Diablo 2 HC that there was a certain thrill and with it fear of possibly losing everything for a small slip up.

Maybe its that. But more than likely you have some problem facing the inevitable reality that you're going to get pwned, raped, sodomized, worked, [hugged], massacred and fisted for your first bunch of online games, and you're much more comftorable knowing you beat the SP campaign, or a few suckers on a LAN.

Personally, I always found the challenge and sheer hostility in some INet games the best part. But not many other people like losing entirely to your own fault as an integral part of becoming competitive. Same like throwing a clan of scrubs against an experienced one will totally demoralize them.

I play in a very competetive NS team. We face the big names everyday, like cri and exigent... We usually do pretty well considering we are a new face to CAL. (2 ties on a good team I won't name to not be a braggart) Losing dosen't bother me at all but for some reason I feel like my intelligence is under siege or something and that if I lose I am an idiot. I think I should just suck it up and play...can't expect to be great after the first time...

As I said, theres no protective mechanism for failure like your team in a game like that. A loss is entirely because of you. At the same time, that has probably been true for hundreds of ns_ games that you've messed up until you learned and perfected.

Nobody can immediately start being good at a multiplayer game - you have to give yourself some time to test the waters, get used to all the intricacies and be spanked a few dozen times in the process. Big dealio.

yep if you lose in an RTS 1vs1 its your fault, if you lose in a ns game, there is always 6x other people to blame

Wow! I've never done online WC3 before, I lost twice and won once, which dosen't get me down I actually had lots of fun and the people were not jerks about it. I played a level 9 guy and I put up a good fight, lost again to a base rusher, and one once. Are night elves a little overpowered? Everyone seems to use them =\

nightelves are the easist to level up hero wise, and they have cheap basic units, thats why everyone uses them

The only RTS game I truly understood (Tech-Tree wise)
was Tiberian Sun. Even then I never attacked. I was purely
defensive. This is why I never Command in
Natural-Selection. I'd turret farm the maps to death and
the servers would probably crash.
Not to mention the players screaming "OMG Commando,
drop me s0m3 shirtg|_|nz!"

WarCraft 3, i'm slowing but surely getting into. But i'm
over-protective over my "Hero" because the other troops
drop too fast for my liking.

We should set-up a support group for RTS gamers like us

set it to tech 2 go nod, nod get turrets and GDI dont!

Giving nod players a clear advantage.

Its a shame Westwood online is now run by EA meaning ALL the tournaments befre RA2 have been shut down and there is nobody playing.

I have the same kind of problem. I only play WC3 in 3vs3 mode. Any less than that, and it feels all...personal. It makes me uncomfortable; if I lose, I feel like an idiot, and if I win, I feel like a jerk.

Watch the replay after losing, try to see where the thing goes wrong and why. You will feel quickly more confident about your play style. You feel like that because you dont know what your playstyle is yet.
• SnidelySnidely Join Date: 2003-02-04 Member: 13098Members
I know what my playstyle is - it's crap.

My problem is that I find it hard to reorientate my war machine if I've built the "wrong" units. Mostly melee versus mostly air? Uh oh. *crunch*

I don't know why but i'm intimidated by the prospect of playing against even a noob player. I have no idea what skill level the guy i'm playing agaisnt is and i've got absolutely no tactics while playing that type of game since I'm an FPS ho. In the end i just feel like i've got more control in FPS because I don't have to manage 400 units, just myself. I'm too gutless, I just don't like to loose even one unit.

I shouldn't have been so afraid, I've won 3 times and lost twice so far. and I just started. (My first opponent was a levle 9 when I am level 1. GG Matching process >_>)

Ooo passive fear of RTS games...nice....

Generally you'll want to play a couple of custom games first to sink into the game (this includes lamez0r maps, like hero arenas which I detest, up to good ol' kingdom war maps)and get the feel of it. After taht, go for ladder.

You fear them because you know that your playstyle is that of an FPS style, something really not suited to RTS games (charge in headfirst with workers?, I think not....maybe except with humans)

Generally it's because you fear that your FPS playstyle is not suited for RTS games. While this isn't necessarily true, it also isn't false. Sometimes FPS games can help with RTS games.

What I'm saying, is that you're terrified because you think you have to change your style of play drastically. Something you're not used to after playing a certain type of game for 1 year or so.

I know this because I have also been one of those people. However, my friends always say I adapt very well, and I have to say, they're right ^_^

EDIT : Yay for level niner being arse-kicked by lv oner. What were his comments

When I first bought Generals I wasn't scared of losing. I beat the single player relatively easily and the skirmish mode was easy. So I decided to play online. Beat first time, no biggie. Beat second time, no biggie. Beat up to like the fifteenth time, annoyed. After that I just got downright angry at the game and didn't play it for a couple of months. I then decided to take a different approach. Record the games and watch how my opponents play. Shortly after that my loses and wins began to be about equal.

Summary: At least you didn't reach the point where you were about to throw the game out the window

best advise: SUYF and play and have some fun

if they don't know you, it doesn't matter

if you are really that scared, make a "fake name" to use under to learn the game more, and get better

I felt the same going 1 on 1 on JK2 and 3 Duel matches. Noone else to blame if you screw up, especially in big arenas where you can't blame clipping.

Bit more pressure on you in RTS games I think precisely because its 1 on 1 and its harder to really gauge how well you're winning - I've fought games where I thought I've been barely repelling the enemy, when in reality I've been pounding everything he's been throwing at me.. leaving his base totally defenseless.

I think its just a psychological thing. As you say, you probably want to suck it up and drive on. Once you face your first smacktard you'll be ready for anything.
