Its really weird...read for details
I have no idea why but I am petrified to lose in RTS games. I have no problem with losing in NS, or any other FPS game. I am used to losing as I've been in some bad NS teams, and such, however I love games like WC3 and C&C Generals. I can't explain why but I'm just scared to play online against someone I don't even know. Any advice or comments? I feel like I bought these games and I am missing out big time on some big fun

Either that, or that very special type of feeling you get from 'duelling' someone - having no team or backup to rely on. I definitely remember from my early days PvPing in even really lame MMOGs like Diablo 2 HC that there was a certain thrill and with it fear of possibly losing everything for a small slip up.
Maybe its that. But more than likely you have some problem facing the inevitable reality that you're going to get pwned, raped, sodomized, worked, [hugged], massacred and fisted for your first bunch of online games, and you're much more comftorable knowing you beat the SP campaign, or a few suckers on a LAN.
Personally, I always found the challenge and sheer hostility in some INet games the best part. But not many other people like losing entirely to your own fault as an integral part of becoming competitive. Same like throwing a clan of scrubs against an experienced one will totally demoralize them.
I feel exactly the same way.
Nobody can immediately start being good at a multiplayer game - you have to give yourself some time to test the waters, get used to all the intricacies and be spanked a few dozen times in the process. Big dealio.

Thanks, that actually helped....off to go play
was Tiberian Sun. Even then I never attacked. I was purely
defensive. This is why I never Command in
Natural-Selection. I'd turret farm the maps to death and
the servers would probably crash.
Not to mention the players screaming "OMG Commando,
drop me s0m3 shirtg|_|nz!"
WarCraft 3, i'm slowing but surely getting into. But i'm
over-protective over my "Hero" because the other troops
drop too fast for my liking.
We should set-up a support group for RTS gamers like us

set it to tech 2 go nod, nod get turrets and GDI dont!
Giving nod players a clear advantage.
Its a shame Westwood online is now run by EA meaning ALL the tournaments befre RA2 have been shut down and there is nobody playing.
btw: I play for fun only, oh the days I just started playing NS....<3
My problem is that I find it hard to reorientate my war machine if I've built the "wrong" units. Mostly melee versus mostly air? Uh oh. *crunch*
Generally you'll want to play a couple of custom games first to sink into the game (this includes lamez0r maps, like hero arenas which I detest, up to good ol' kingdom war maps)and get the feel of it. After taht, go for ladder.
You fear them because you know that your playstyle is that of an FPS style, something really not suited to RTS games (charge in headfirst with workers?, I think not....maybe except with humans)
Generally it's because you fear that your FPS playstyle is not suited for RTS games. While this isn't necessarily true, it also isn't false. Sometimes FPS games can help with RTS games.
What I'm saying, is that you're terrified because you think you have to change your style of play drastically. Something you're not used to after playing a certain type of game for 1 year or so.
I know this because I have also been one of those people. However, my friends always say I adapt very well, and I have to say, they're right ^_^
EDIT : Yay for level niner being arse-kicked by lv oner. What were his comments
Summary: At least you didn't reach the point where you were about to throw the game out the window
if they don't know you, it doesn't matter
if you are really that scared, make a "fake name" to use under to learn the game more, and get better
Bit more pressure on you in RTS games I think precisely because its 1 on 1 and its harder to really gauge how well you're winning - I've fought games where I thought I've been barely repelling the enemy, when in reality I've been pounding everything he's been throwing at me.. leaving his base totally defenseless.
I think its just a psychological thing. As you say, you probably want to suck it up and drive on. Once you face your first smacktard you'll be ready for anything.
