if you use Icon Packager or some sort of special program to associate icons, you can just associate the arrow to a blank icon.

TweakUI is SUPPOSED to be able to disable them, but I've never gotten TweakUI to do anything at all with WindowsXP.

Get Tweak-XP v3. It does it and you can do lots of other things also.

Download TweakUI. (Search Microsoft's site, it's a Powertoy) Under the Explorer roll-out, go to Shortcut and select "None" under Shortcut Overlay. This'll reset all desktop icon positions, so take a screenshot if you have it organized.

Eh? You could've just tweaked the registry instead of downloading a program :\

1) Open regedit, and locate HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile (you ned to scroll down alot to find it)
2) Find the value 'IsShortcut' and change it to 'IsShortcutOld'
3) Reboot

Don't worry about technical problems, I have used this personlly and nothing bad has happened to my PC <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Tweak UI tweaks the registry for you, so you don't have to memorize crap like that. It doesn't have to stay resident. I highly recommend it if you don't have it already.
