Screenshots included.
I've just played ns_bast on lightgamma 5.

It adds such a deeper dept of realism due to enhanced lighting.

Just look at the screenshots yourself.

http://wub.whm-host.com/Smith/screenshots/ns/screenshot5.jpg

Edit: Wow, the compression took out all the quality.

Check out bast yourself with lightgamma 5, you'll see.

Yea, screenshots don't look nearly as good as ingame after compression.

    Screenshot 5 looks the best.

I was getting this wierd feeling like I'd seen a game that looked like this before, but it was only seeing picture five that made it click:

Lightgamma 5 = Natural Selection + Silent Hill.

I can totally imagine picture five with fan blade shadows whirling in the small patches of light. SEXY.

I might play with lightgamma 5 a couple of rounds just to scare myself.

Any other wierd tricks like this? Can you make it a server variable? :D

Heh, if you want scary, play with light gamma 10 on bast in double res where the big funnel thing is over you. You can only see to the edges, so you'll hear everything but won't be able to see it ,

Here are some beautiful screenshots i took ingame! They were also taken on ns_bast (unarguably the best map in all of ns!)

My settings also add a deeper depth of realism due to the lighting! See for yourself.

That looks really dramatic in screenshots, until you try to shoot skulks, fail, and die. Trust me - aliens have a massive advantage in the dark.

On the other hand, matchbox's screenshots are dramatic (since we're on the route of changed lighting = drama) AND you can see skulks.

a few clan members and i just played around with everyone with lightgamma 5 on..
marines had to travel thru all the hives with skulks ambushing along the way

totally differnt game and very creepy and fun. with silence its even scarier. you would just see these shadows scurry around. even in close combat it was hard to keep your eyes on the skulks and would see the flashing around. you had to just guess where to shoot sometimes.

give it a try its fun. bast and nothing are the best for this

Im jaded with the creepy factor since I began playing NS competetively, its no longer a game, but a hobby for me. I miss being a pub-nub sometimes

Aye, though i dont play competitvely (im far closer to the cs clan community than the ns one) I wish i was a nub things were so much more scarier back then.

I could not see a thing outside those light-sources due of TFT being rather poor in showing pitch-black. If maps were like that, and I intended to play on them longer than the next ten minutes, it would be a pain in the @rse without resorting to programs like PowerStrip.

When did any of that change then CWAG?

The original screenshots in the first post look very tastefull, exciting and dramatic. That's great if you want to make a creepy movie to capture the feel of ns. If you want to play an actual game, waddling around in the dark might prove a big handicap.

All in all, it depends on personal preferences, but I prefer playing with "normal" lighting and gamma. So definately not the high gamma pics and I can't say I would want to play ns with the first screenies either.

Yes, Playing with such low gamma makes the game scary to the point where you jump. Just like when playing Silent Hill. Its very good for Screen Shots but playing like that just gets you killed. You Run around with your Flash Light on and need to move in groups.

And that isn't part of the atmosphere of NS?

I keep my gamma at a quasi-normal level, I had no idea what the game looked like jacked up like that, wow that's a huge advantage..

I'm half tempted to move this into the mapping forum as maps can work on very high gamma values if the mapper keeps them in mind while setting the lightsources.

Generally, I guess it's up to the designers own tastes; I know a bunch of people who can't stand high contrasts at all.

Anybody here played Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow? The maps in that game are the most atmospheric I've ever played and they're completely functional because both teams have vision enhancements like night vision and flashlight.

In order for such dark maps to work both teams would need some vision improvements. Alien flashlight working on marines would get the job done, but the marine flashlight would need some major revamps so it's actually useful for lighting up skulks(and so it doesn't show up as a big sphere of light around the marine to everyone else), which is probably not easy at all for the HL engine.

You said it yourself. Believe me, I'd love to see a little SC:PT infused into NS, but unfortunately, the HL engine sets close limitations to that.

it's just begging for marines to be able to build FloodLights ... make certain areas of maps REAL dark, so marines 'need' to build a floodlight so they can see it all properly.. shame HL engine aint so great at that sort of thing :x

This is when we all cross our fingers REAL tight and pray the dev team makes a new NS based off the HL2 engine. I don't mean porting it (altho the CS2 port screenshots look hot), I mean really just make the modnew for it. Even as insane as it would be.

I really look forward to actually (a) using the full potential of my vid card while playing NS, and (b) seeing what the dev team can do with all the incredible lighting effects and variables that can be tweaked in the HL2 engine

To end this tangent right now, the best information we have is that:

Charlie wants to do NS2 based on a new engine with all that this entails.

He does currently offer a number of concepts to various investors, NS2 being one of them.

He won't insist on his pet project if another one would allow him to get off the ground first.
