Co_PitchBlack.
The OSS BOB III lost it's main power during an accident. Now the whole ship is floating in space with auxiliary lights alone. The crew is in terror.
Ok, so the map is dark. Question is, how does one use a non biased way to light up a map. Cause if I use my monitors normal operating function, the map is REALLY dark, but if I turn on "Superbright mode 1" (viewsonic P95F+), like I normally do in every game I play, the map becomes just right. How do I know it won't be too bright / dark for other peoples configuration?

It should be playable with default brightness settings.
There's still people who wants to play the way it's meant to be played
Different video cards, monitor brightness, etc, will cause quite a variation.
So I'd suggest using the default settings, then every few rooms, get a few people to check out the lighting with you, make sure it looks alright (It absolutely SUCKS to have a map that was created by someone with wildly different gamma/brightness than you, and they think it looks perfect =/)
btw, for an idea on how to make a dark map look awesome, look at the 1.04 version of ns_... um... ns_themapwithuppersewerandwithhivesnamedsewer,vent,andgenerator =P

That's exactly the point. There doesn't exist such a thing as "default brightness".
Each monitor, each videocard, each video card driver, will affect the gamma/brightness/contrast of a level. How much a monitor as been used will also affect the gamma/brightness/contrast.
Your ambient room lights and reflections will also affect how the game looks.
So, it's hard to balance. I guess I'll simply use all of the computers at my disposition to make an average...
P.S. Monitors with different "superbright modes" do not have a standard brightness. They usually have 2 to 6 modes of display, each one has been tailored for particular uses (text/internet, movies, games, pictures, etc...).
As far as dark maps being too easy for aliens, I digress.
A hidden marine or a hidden alien, both cannot be seen in dark maps. Motion Tracking and Sent of Fear will help both teams. Dark maps also give a better feel (depending on the room/settings), and they help ambushes (wich are nowadays non-existent). Dark maps help make the game more tense, and add confusion and disorientation. That is only my opinion though...
P.S. I am aware that some people like to "exploit" their hardware to make maps SUPER bright even when it's suppose to be pitch black. They don't care that they make the maps look ugly, all they want is easier kills. We all hate those people. But there is nothing we can do to change that.

really? well then aliens can't see what they're attacking. so I disagree. they're bad for both teams.

No. Why?
Lamers disregard this utility and boost their gamma, brightness, whatever to the max - so they get easy kills. You can't possibly make a map dark for these people.

You can, but you have to turn of -bounce so that you can have totally pitch black regions and you would only get sucky direct lighting.
