if he'd actually put walls in and heating and some sort of floor and a full-on PC then it might've been cool. add on a decent TV/Projector, fridge and a sofa then it'd definitely be worthwhile ^^

Yeah, that would have been much better.
I would have dug a trench to lead power and internet to the hole, maybe pour cement walls and put in wood for the floor, and then get your own little gaming room. Most people dream of having their own little kingdom. A place where they rule. Digging a hole and making a fort out of it can be an embodiment of that dream, sort of making it come true.

Of course, it's also just a really cool construction job, so that might be it. Either way, that's one damn cool hole.

I've wanted a house underground for quite some time. Easy and cheap heating costs, and just plain cool.

edit: alright!! my hosting still works, it'll be going down soon though.

I wonder how much radon collects in there if you keep it decently airtight...

Not much by my measure. Radon is a rare noble gas, and is infact, radioactive. (Hence the name Radon)

Because it's so rare, you often have to dig hundreds more meters then this person dug in order to reach the level as to where radon will collect.

I dug a hole as a child one summer holiday off school, gave it a central pillar and laid brances and leaves over it and stuff. It was our summer den.

Ahhh memories.
I'd dig one in my yard but its er, about five foot square and made of concrete, plus I live in a city centre, people might look at me funny =\

I was half expecting that to be a spoof of saddam coming out of a hole. Not bad though, Could have had the whole emergency floodlight thing going on like in 28 days later, but maybe thats just my hole fetish.

I was thinking more of the health aspects of the matter rather than the "oh look it's radon, fun!." aspects.

It's a dense gas and should be able to collect slowly in pits and holes if there is too little ventilation. There are many a building and water well which has problems with radon gas(due to it's radioactivity and how easily it is inhaled and/or drunk and the fact that radon decays through a series of other elements(metals) ending in various isotopes of lead. Back when radioactivity was thought to be healthy by some you could even get a clay pot with a chunck of radium ore in, the purpose was to disolve radon in water over night so you could have fresh radon water in the morning . An interesting page with pictures and descriptions of this can be found at radioactive quack cures, especially read about the poor guy who drank radithor per his doctors recommendation.).

Not all such buildings even have concrete walls(some types of concrete contain ALOT of radium and you get too high levels of radon), radon can be formed in the ground at significant quantities from decay of isotopes of radium and other elements. The usual fix for this is to increase ventilation until tolerances for radon are met or in extreme cases even have added ventilation under the house.

Necrotic, you just made me remember about the whole I dug back when I was like in 4th grade. It wasn't big, just enough to fit a (really short) 4th grader and it was only up to my waist, but I could crouch down on it and put the trash can lid over it and bam, perfect hide & seek spot!

Though then it rained and got flooded w/ 2 feet of water and I stopped using it anyway, so I had to fill it back in. it was also a hazard since it was a 3 foot deep hole in the ground covered by a plastic trash can :P

But for those few weeks, I had my own little hole...
