    Most of the time why I drop tf and 2 ips, a armory , maybe an observatory (I'll drop it within 2 mins of the game). I drop a tf to have the ability to electrify of course.

Your marines are all fighting off aliens in an attempt to lock down a hive and secure several resource towers surronding it. You are not playing wiht 1337 players. You have one guy at base who is killed by 2 oncoming skulks. The skulks proceed to munch on the IP, while a third skulk attacks your other resource towers, which are unelectrified. (and yes, this is a very realistic scenario) What do you do? Die. (or be set back severely with a relocate and the loss of your rts)

    The bottom line is that in a pub, you cannot count on 1-2 members of your team not to die at an inappropriate moment. This often will happen before an observatory is erected for beaconing purposes. (besides, do you really want to beacon while you're doing something important? (and that's all it takes for the game to be over without some form of simple base defense.) Also, how can you defend your RTs that are spread throughout the map? Sending marines there whenever as skulk nibbles it? That will thin out your forces.

    Btw: Swift Idiot, that was hilarious! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
    If you have a hive down by that time, relocate. I just played a game in fact, where we took Computer Core, and maint. They took out my base with 1 skulk. I relocated to Comm Core. They Rush Maint, with 3 fades, kill it off. I beacon, with level 1 armor and level 1 weapons, tell EVERYBODY to run to eclipse and kill it. Basically 10 marines vs 1 hive means that the hive is down before the fades come back from maint. The fades sit on their 1 dc in eclipse, and i beacon again, cause most of my marines are dead, and rush eclipse. 3 fades down, game over. Point is, this was a pub, and i go on to win after having 2 marines owned at base by 1 skulk. Agreed, if my marines did not kill eclipse right then, the game was over...but it was a good win <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Hey curly! Good to see you outside of our little rabbit hole in the net. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    To answer the main question, try commanding under different tactics. If you drop an armory and an IP, they might not eject you. After becoming known to the server regulars, you might try your own tactics.

    Some mines and your structures as far from the comm chair as you can put them whilst maintaining LoS with them. Any lone skulk gets past your defences and starts munching, hop out and own his **** across the room. Put a mine or two between your structures and the chair if you don't trust your aim that much. Gives you a little more time to kill them.

    Try and knife them if you really want to look pro, though I never do this myself as being killed as the comm far outweighs the coolness of knifing a skulk as the comm.

    Curly, here's the thing. Your marines shouldn't be somewhere away from the aliens trying to lock down a hive. They should be pressuring the aliens, giving them something to do rather than focusing everything on your base. Also, 1 pack of mines in base would do wonders. It's true that skulks could dodge it, But let's say 3 skulks attack 2 marines. The 2 marines have really **** aim so they kill only 1 skulk and injure the other 2. Now the 2 skulks are munching on your ip and they somehow manage to walk past the mines around the ip. All you need to do is hop out of the chair and you'll either kill the skulks, or they'll trip over a mine as they try to get to you.

    Combine his post and mine and you have a full explanation of why mines are just as good for base defence as turrets, but they are cheaper!
