I'm not sure, but I'll give it a shot.

I have a USB optical that I just recently acquired. I had a ruff first week with problems like you, tried plugging it back in and rebooting etc. What SEEMED to work for me was reinstalling the drivers and then rebooting.

Or, you could try fiddling with the wire. On occasions my mouse just stops working, and playing with the wire kicks it back into action. *shrug*

Uh the only advice I can give would be to look around the internet with a metasearch engine (It'll find the results you want) Try Dogpile or Mamma And whatever you do don't use MS their Tech Support isn't very good IMO ( I still don't know why WMP freezes when you go open (although quicktime does that too) and I can't get a new Digital Rights Licence Bah)

Check the wire for any holes or anything. It sounds like the mouse isn't getting the information to the computer. If any wires are broken, just get a new mouse. It's cheaper.

I would remove the mouse drivers, reboot, and plug that sucker in. Plus it in between the shut-down and re-boot if you don't have Win98SE or newer. In fact, that might be good advice, anyways.

But that's just me. Make sure you have the driver on hand, just in case Windows doesn't.
