<div class="IPBDescription">conexant vs XP in fight to death</div> The story so far

ASUS p4c800 deluxe mobo
INTEL P4 800fsb 2.4ghz
KINGMAX pc3200 512 DDR
ASUS GFFX5200 128mb DDR Magic
120gb seagate sATA 7200 rpm hdd
Windows XP OEM

and the villian:
Conexant HCF PCI V.90 56k modem

I recently lost my ADSL due to financial concerns, so I'm going back to 56k for a little while. However, my shiny 4-port billion adsl router is now useless, so I was trying to install the afformentioned 56k modem into my new pc. Its a modem I stole from my old Aptiva AMD k-6 II. I also still have the original "restore" CD from Aptiva containing the modem's drivers.

I installed the modem in my computer, switched it on, let it boot up and it informed me I have a Simple PCI communications controller ready to be installed. So far, so good.

It then opens up a wizard, and asks me if I wish to autosearch for the driver, or just direct it straight to the folder where the drivers are. I selected Advanced (or straight direction) and tell it to look in E:\Conexant\drivers. In that folder are more inf files than I can poke a stick at. It comes back and tells me that it cant find anything. I ask it to autosearch all removable media - it takes .001 of a second to tell me it has nothing.

So I click down the bottom on the "Dont search, I will manually choose the driver to install" button. It brings me up a list of possible computer devices. I select modems. It then brings up a screen saying I dont have any drivers for that device, but it does have a button saying "have disk".

I click that - I direct it to the driver location on the CD - again it reckons it cant find anything.

Now here comes the bit that has me hurling obscenities at my computer. I close down all the windows, go back to control panel, click on add new hardware, and that wizard comes up again, telling me about the simple communications controller. I say "No, thats not it". It asks me if the device is connected, and I say yes. It then shows me a list of all the components in my computer, with the Simple communications controller highlighted up the top. I scroll to the bottom and selected add new hardware. It asks me if I wish to auto search or manually select device, I click manual. I select modem, the computer searches for a plug and play modem but cant find one. It then gives me a list of modem drivers - and Lo and Behold there it is - conexant hcf v.90 56k modem. I click that and then next. The computer proceeds to install the device, tells me everything is working fine.

I try to dial up - hardware error. I go back to device manager, and sure enough it claims my modem is installed - but the Simple communications PCI controller is still highlighted as uninstalled.

So you can see why I'm angry - if I try and install a driver for the simple communcations device the computer detects (which is my modem it is detecting) it wont let me. If I ask it to simply install a modem (not just install a driver for that device it can detect) - it has no problems locating drivers, but its not installing them for my modem. ARGH!

Please, does anyone who finishes reading that twisted novel have any suggestions. How can I force this **** of a computer to read the drivers? I even tried downloading the drivers of the net from my friends comp, but it refuses to recognise them as long as I'm trying to install drivers for that communications device.

Try downloading the drivers for the modem? The drivers WinXP may be out dated or borked. If you can't find it online, just buy a new modem. They cost like $30 for a 56k. Other than that, not much I can do. Downloading the drivers from online usually works, or try the Windows CD> Who knows?
