Ns Wont Connect

"conencting to server...
retrying
retrying
retrying
failed to connect to server"

i just reinstalled steam, lost my binds, and found that didnt fix it ..

    first thing; can you connect to servers for other games? (other Halflife mods using steam - ie CS, DoD)

    if not, then it's a connection / computer problem; make sure you don't have a firewall blocking the HL ports, or that you aren't behind a router

    if you can connect to other games, it's a problem with Ns or with the server(s) - can you connect to LAN servers?

    ummmmmmmm

    1) Are you getting pings off of these servers?

    2) Have you changed ANYTHING recently?

    3) Try pinging/tracrting to the server (Sart-->Run-->cmd-->ping/tracert IP)

    4) try ALOT of servers.

    5) try sorting things to specificly include/exclude Australia (thats where you are... right?)

    6) as shanks said: can you connect to other mods? (how about other non HL related OL games?)

    I yes if your having the same prob as me (cos i always end up oging thru all the probs), if your firewall is a HARDWARE firewall, you will need to disable it to enable incoming lan/internet transitions.

    I also had this problem with:
    NS
    C&C Red Alert
    Mohaa

    And theres probably quite a few more games that will do this.

    ummm, a hardware fire wall should not stop you from CONNECTING to games.

    it will stop you from hosting, but not connecting to... (especialy not on a lan)

    Hey all

    Im new to NS, one of my friends told me about it and I was like whoo aliens vs marines i luv these games.

    Straight away i checked my COGS to see if i had NS. I had, how happy I was. I downloaded all the right files, took me a while cos im on 56k and finally the Coup De Gras. Double Clicking on the play link.

    It said launching Natural Selection Steam, i was sweating with anticipation. It was loading, and when it got up to Parsing Server Info, something happened. It stopped and the console came up with a message that goes a little something like this...

    'Could not connect because of nsd. Please restart to join server'.

    My jaw dropped, what did this all mean! I asked in the COGS forums but those people there didnt help me. I came here straight away and joined up to the forums in hope of some kind person helping me out.

    Tell me! What should i do!

    Did this happen on multiple different servers when you attempted to connect? If you only tried once it may have been the server.

    Still looking for an answer to the original posters question..

    nah ive tried it with multiple servers.


    alright, so this is what i did.

    i went into COGS and went to configure games, clicked on NS right. It showed me the file path and it went like this 'C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\sapio_boarder_69@hotmail.com\counter-strike\hl.exe'. Now theres counter strike in there somewhere, so i tried to change the executable (for those of u who do not know what an executable is its just there in those inverted commas). I dont know how to change it to get rid of the counter strike part....

    can anyone help me! thankyou! I hate being a newbie!

    Okay Bear here is an idea. I take it since you are using COGS you are

    A) An Australian

    B) A Telstra bigpond customer

    Here is my suggestion - give COGS a miss unless you absolutely have to use it, at least for now. Open steam, click on servers, click change filters. Set location to australia and the game to natural selection, then click refresh all. Join a server and see if it works.

    Try that for now. If it works, but you still really want to use COGS to play on gamearena, then pm me and we'll work from there.

    This is what I have for NS steam in cogs

    c:\program files\steam\steamapps\j_avenell@hotmail.com\half-life\hl.exe

    My nsp folder is located c:\program files\steam\steamapps\j_avenell@hotmail.com\half-life\nsp
