Boy: Yes it can. I just did that a whole bunch yesterday. I think there was one game where it couldn't, but in most of the ones that have it, it does.

Hmm. I think we need to take this argument to the next level, and include all the items in SUPER SMASH BROTHERS: MELEE. Hah, there is bound to be at least one thing in there that is so useful that it is undisputably better.

If the latter, then a cardboard box is indeed quite useful, but it only beats the hookshot insofar as you could carry several hookshots in one of them.
As a sidenote, I must confess that I'm at kind of an impasse now that we've broached this boundary. In the context of the real world, is the hookshot more useful than a towel? This is a very difficult question, which borders on philosophy. A case could be made that the towel is simply the real-life equivalent of the hookshot, but this is rather dubious, and depends greatly on the length of the towel. I shall have to ponder on this.
I'm going to say the boomerang was better. While the hookshot was a pretty good weapon. The boomerang always seemed better.
Example:
Any of the pseudo dungeons in Wind Waker. You fight a group of 5+ moblins and just start whackin em with the boomerang and then make with swordplay. You could kill large groups of bats very quickly AND it could lock onto multiple targets for mass ownage.
<!--QuoteBegin-@gentOrange+May 17 2004, 11:45 AM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (@gentOrange @ May 17 2004, 11:45 AM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> I'm going to say the boomerang was better. The way the targetting in Wind Waker works, that is indeed true (although I still don't think that makes the boomerang better than the hookshot) but I often found that in OoT and MM, it was faster, easier, and more fun to close with my target to hookshot range and use that, rather than back off a little farther and whack him with the boomerang. Wind Waker does make the boomerang much more viable when you've got time to prepare for a shot, though, and it's clearly the better choice when collecting a bunch of scattered loot, as well as the fact that it now stuns enemies longer than the hookshot. (This was definitely not always the case.) I say hookshot is still better though, based on versatility, and sheer coolness.
Cold-nite: yeah, I just brought that up myself. I honestly don't know what to think of it. The Hookshot still pwnz all in the videogame arena, as I haven't seen many games with a very useful towel, except as some jokey story item.

It heals, it blocks off paths, it makes a handy flashlight and it scalds aliens; we all know and love it:

Well, think about it in this context: if NS had both the hookshot and the welder, which one do you think you'd want to be carrying more? I'd defintely go for the hookshot. It bats lerks out of the air, stuns onos and fades, drags gorges over to you, does the same for skulks, and just may kill them outright, all in addition to the fact that it can propel you with blinding speed towards any building, makes elevators completely unnecesary, and makes jetpacks less necessary
