The aliens always spawn as level 1s and may evolve to others as they see fit, providing they have the resources. Only the level 1 can wallwalk. The level 2 is a builder. The level 3 can fly. the level 4 is the only bipedal alien and has the ability to blink (teleport) to other locations, but not through walls, the level 5 is a huge tank and can kill several marines in succession just by charging through them. See much in similarity to avp?
I hope this helps worf.

have your friend look through the bajillion other threads calling NS a gloom clone.. just search for GLOOM and you're bound to hit them...

A: Have your friend look through the bajillion other threads calling NS a SC clone.. just search for SC and you're bound to hit them...
Start with that. AvP (And, to a lesser extent, Gloom) was a death match, pure and simple. A team deathmatch, to be sure, but there was no need of teammates, and one good player could carry the game.
In Natural Selection, teammates are vital to your survival. Besides which, your personal score doesn't mean jack. You could be an alien with hundreds of kills and a handful of deaths, but if you've just lost that last Hive, you're screwed. The more I think about how teamplay is encouraged, the more I admonish myself for not thinking of the ideas myself, much earlier.
Look, Natural Selection draws inspiration from Gloom. And the Aliens movies. And Starcraft, and Half-Life, and any number of other FPS/RTS games. And then it smacks them all on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper and runs off, screaming into the night.
But tell him he doesn't have to take our word for it, if he doesn't want to. Just tell him to wait 5 days.

that gets em everytime!
Oh and the gameplay will be completely different
and of course theres no predators <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
and its gonna be much better obviously...
oh yeah, its got great netcode as well, netcode that actually makes the game playable!
Many games are influenced by the aliens movies and books, that doesnt mean they are AvP clones.
Oh and if your friend still doesnt get it point him towards CS <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->
a clone is a copy that is exactly the same
this is not AVP so its not a clone
I did think of making a game like NS(RTS/FPS mix multiplayer game w/ massive teamplay) But im only 16 and not like I have enuff coding skills to do it yet.
i think i call him now as dumb idiot and leave him alone in his little soft room.
facts of avp2:
- 3 species
- aliens have melee, marines long range, preds have high tech
- team death match, death match, etc.
- simple fps
facts of ns:
- 2 species
- aliens have melee and long range, marines have close and long range
- aliens vs marines
- rts implented things: base building, commanding forces to enemy or to defend etc.
- evolving aliens
he thinks that ns plays like avp...
With traditional online games (mods in particular), we have EVERYTHING given an equal role. Each class or weapon must be balanced to be equal to the other classes. Every enemy must be equal. Without this, the game is not fun because weaponry will be "Whored". In a sense, everything SHOULD be on a level playing field. They are all SEPERATE, but equal.
In Natural Selection, the TOTAL power of each team is dependant on the resources secured. THIS scaling of power based on resources is what makes NS an RTS, not the commander mode. Even with Aliens vs Aliens, it would still be RTS at its core. It is designed like an RTS game, with every element being balanced based on its RP cost. IF you implemented an Onos into TFC, EVERYONE would play it. Natural Selection is balanced because getting an Onos requires a HUGE investment of resources (The cost of 3 Heavy armors, PLUS 10 rps). It is therefore balanced to be evenly matched against opposition which costs as much as itself.
THIS is why NS is completely different from Gloom, or AvP, or any of those. It is TRULY an RTS at heart. I have heard PTs describe Natural Selection as 70 percent FPS, 30 Percent RTS. I disagree. Natural Selection is built on an RTS back bone with the commander mode as the visible outgrowth of that backbone. The majority of the Players will play it like an FPS, it will feel like an FPS, but behind the scenes, the gameplay, balance, and flow are ALL balanced like a real time strategy game.
TELL YOUR FRIEND TO STICK THAT IN HIS PIPE AND SMOKE IT! <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/asrifle.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='::asrifle::'><!--endemo-->

I have thought of having a RTS/FPS mix, but not to extent of NS, as Humbaba pointed out. I wouldn't have thought it was possible with modern technology, much less the Half-life engine. Not only that, but throw in aliens (ALWAYS fun to play on...whatever the game), Hive sight, the resource structure, the balance of weapons (long reload for HMG, poor long range for shotgun, etc.) ensuring marines must stick together, EVERYTHING in this game is made to ensure that teamplay is encouraged, if not forced. Not just the commander mode.
It makes me giddy to think about.
