<div class="IPBDescription">big pics inside</div>As many of you know, I got a new laptop because I no longer have use for my old one. Its just too slow and with too little HDD space for me to be able to get any work done with anymore, but I figured rather than throwing it away surely somebody would need a cheap laptop, and so this might just fit their needs. And since I like you guys I decided to post here before doing the eBay thing.
I'm asking $175 + shipping for it. I'm in the US, and while I'll sell to whoever, but I doubt that if you're outside the US you would want to pay all the $ to ship it to you. :P
You get:
- Laptop
- Carrying bag
- AC Adapter
- D-Link PCMCIA 10/100 NIC
- Restore CD
- 2 button + wheel PS/2 mouse
<b>Specs:
Compaq Presario 1277
CPU: AMD K6-2 433mhz
RAM: 192MB RAM (8 of it is Shared Video though. Or maybe 4. I forget).
HDD: 4.8GB
13 Inch monitor capable of 24bit colors
Monitor Res: 800x600. That's it. Can't do more, can't do less.
CD-ROM: 24x CD-ROM
1 USB slot
1 PCMCIA slot
1 1.44MB Floppy Disk! woo!
Built in 56k modem.. oohh.. aaahh...</b>
More information about the notebook can be found <a href='http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-Compaq_Presario_1277_146663_033' target='_blank'>on this page here</a>.
The laptop originally had 64MB RAM in it, but I put a 128 stick in it once I got it from the original owner, who kindly forgot to erase his stash of Vietnamese porn from the drive before forking it over. Also I have a PCMCIA D-Link 10/100 NIC.
Also it originally ran Windows 98 SE, but I formatted the drive and installed XP Pro with no problems. I'd recommend XP (Pro or Home) on here even though XP is a little slower (and you can tweak it to be faster if you want) because all the laptop hardware components are automatically detected, which they aren't for Win98 SE and so that can make it a pain when reinstalling. I do still have the original Compaq Rescue Disc Thingy so if you want 98 SE on there, go for it.
Laptop will be low level formatted (writing 0's to all sectors, as I've used it for work and stuff) and the hard drive will be completely blank (unpartitioned) when sent.
<b>Important note about the condition of the laptop</b>
I want to be very clear about everything I know about the physical condition of the laptop. I'm not out to rip anyone off and I definately want people to know about these before they buy it from me:
- The battery cover is missing (it was missing when I recieved it). This means that if the laptop is tiled up on the left side, the battery will slide right out. I guess you could tape it in, I just never bothered. And Compaq is a bunch of asshats and they charge $60 for a battery cover replacement... :O
- The battery itself cannot seem to keep much of a charge. When "completely" charged it supplies maybe around 30 minutes of battery life to the laptop. I wouldn't count on not using the AC adapter for more than a short period of time.
- The laptop has been dropped once. It was last semester in one of my classes. It was closed and turned off at the time. *The important stuff like the screen, hard drive, etc are all fine* The only thing broken was a few cosmetic things like a plastic hinge thingy on the left side (<a href='http://www.doomaniac.com/stuff/Old%20Laptop/DCP01176.JPG' target='_blank'>see pic</a>) and also a cover thingy for the monitor hinge (<a href='http://www.doomaniac.com/stuff/Old%20Laptop/DCP01173.JPG' target='_blank'>see pic</a>). A little glue would fix that up no problem, I just never bothered. Again, I tested it a lot after the drop and nothing important is messed up at all. At least I know its pretty rugged. :P
- Screen can have a lot of 'ghosting' from moving objects. You will not be playing games or watching movies on this thing because of this, even if the CPU and RAM would normally allow you to do so. I guess if you vga'ed out to a monitor you could do that just fine, but that kinda makes the point of a laptop moot. :P
Okay now enough of the disclaimers, now on to the good things there are to say about this laptop:
- Its rugged (see above paragraph about being dropped)
- Internal components (motherboard, cpu, ram, hdd, cd-rom, keyboard, touchpad) all work as well very well.
- The laptop is very stable. I've hardly ever had it crash on me.
- Windows XP has all the correct drivers for the thing right from the install. 2000 probably does as well, but I didn't try.
If you have any questions about the laptop, go ahead and reply here (someone else may have the same question), but if you're wanting to buy it please email me at doomaniac@cox.net.

You can see lots of pics of the laptop <a href='http://www.doomaniac.com/stuff/?dir=Old%20Laptop/' target='_blank'>here</a>.
(PS to mods: I didn't think to ask before posting this, sorry. I had assumed it would be okay since I did this sorta thing a year ago w/ a Wacom Tablet. If you decide this shouldn't be on here then I won't get my feelings hurt if you lock it.)

Generic onboard crap. As I said before, you won't be playing any games with this thing.
