agreed.

However, how else is the company that made the game going to get compensation for their time put into it? Of course, running a server DOES take alot of cash... but i am sure that the amount that some companies require you to pay is a bit extreme... perhaps even gouging out your eyeballs into bloody pools of gore.

$30 a month is like paying for the game every other month, if you bought it strait from the shelves. (and if it costed 60$, which i doubt it did) 15 dollars is like paying for the game every 4 months (which isn't too bad) and paying something like $5 a month is like paying for the original game's cost for a year. If you can make a killer MMO game and have it at 5-15 dollars a month, you will attract SWARMS of players, simply because it's killa-cheap to pay for when you need to.

However, you always have examples of those really nice looking games but dont offer jack-all in terms of gameplay, replayability, or even enjoyment. Especially at "higher levels" of the game. Level 50 doesn't seem as fun as the first 49... NTM the chance that you could have your credit card number stolen... "YOUR CHECK IS IN THE MAIL!" is best for paying MMO games, IMO.

going back to necrotic's calculations: 2 days in a low-wage job = years subscription.
    OH NOES!!!

Unless there's a drastic discount for a year's subscription, I think you just pulled that number out of your arse.

    Anyway, lesse...

Minimum wage is $5.15/hr in most US States.

    $5.15 * 8 hours a day = $41.20 a day.

    $41.20 * 2 days = $82.40 total.

Prices for City of Heroes, directly from their website, are:

QUOTE

1 month for $14.95
    3 months for $41.85 ($13.95 per month)
    6 months for $77.70 ($12.95 per month)
    12 months for $143.40 ($11.95 per month)

So it would actually be about 4 days in a minimum-wage job.

    lol ewww...

okies, lets use my cruddy job as an example then... it pays about £5.00 an hour. the fee ($15USD) roughly translates to what; £8?

each day at work I'll do around 7-9 hours (depends how my time is.)

    let's do the math!!! =D

    8 (fee) x 12 (months in a year) = £96

now lets divide that by my wage, and assume I average 8 hours a day.

    £96 / £5 = 19.2 (hours) / 8 (hours in a workday) = 2.4

That's 2.4 days of work. Hodge gets a slightly better wage than me so I think his did actually fall under 2 days.
See, it's not as expensive as you think =D

...heck, my busspass costs £35 a month, what's £8 compared to that???

edit: lol CF did the math too.. though I was just going by my job or hodges job which while aren't mininmum wage are still incredibly bad pay to be honest =/
Also, CoH DOES offer a discount if you buy in bulk though I don't remember exactly what, and even with US minimum wage calcs it comes to a measly 4 days work out of a year. That means you could work for 4 days then play CoH for the rest of the year lol

...gah CF showed the discounted rates. Oh wells, I should've used those for my calculations too =P

I'm sitting here contemplating picking up CoH. It definately sounds fun, but the monthly fees always tend to put me off, since my past history with MMOG's hasn't been all too great.

*EDIT: Gemmy gemmy gemcaeks, the annual feel, $140.40 works out roughly ?80, give or take 40p or so. At your ?5 wage, working 8 hours a day, that is exactly 2 days work.

I have a crappy low-wage job that gives me less than 15 hours a week... I can't afford monthly fees right now.
  • LegionnairedLegionnaired Join Date: 2002-04-30 Member: 552Members, Constellation
Basicly, for every three months up to a year you add on to your subscription plan, you take a dollar off the monthly fee.

And this is wicked awesome. I haven't even ventured out of Skyway City/SC/KR/Boomtown/Perez yet, and they're adding new areas?

    Damn.

I really need to stop dieng while I solo, it's really cramping my leveling.

When was minimum wage in America 5.15? Its not like that in cali, to be sure. Here, its 7.25(and don't complain Iowa/middle people- remember, everything costs more here too).
  • GadzukoGadzuko Join Date: 2002-12-26 Member: 11556Members, Constellation
$5.15 is the national minimum wage, states can set their own higher ones if they choose.

Guild Wars, another MMORPG (they call it a COOPORPG, cooperative online rpg) isn't going to have a monthly fee, so it can be done. Maybe because they were so sucessful with SC, DII etc that they are so rich they can afford to pay for the servers with their own money. Either way, these people are gods.

it's nice but it's not really an MMORPG any more than Phantasy Star Online is =P

Think about it... the times when you actually 'play' (ie: combat and whatnot) have a max of 32 players. The 'lobby' areas where you shop and chat are the big areas =3
