<div class="IPBDescription">i cant join a game =(</div> Well, I used to play steam through my colleges broadband, but school ended and i came home to a 56k modem, which sucks. But i figured i could at least join a game in steam, i see a 56ker everyonce in a while. But i cant, I can log onto steam just fine but when i try joining it says retrying to connect to game server... (1)... (2)... (3)... connection failed after 3 retries, my brother has the same problem and is on the same lan (we connect through another computer to the internet if that makes any difference)

It's your router. Just connect the phone line dirrectly to your modem and your good to go.

Your only choices are to either ditch the router or open the ports. (27015 and 27005, I think.)

    27000-27009 UPD
    27013-27014 UPD
    27030-27039 TCP
    1200 UDP
    27056 TCP, UDP

Those are all the ports you have to open/forward.

You open the ports on your router, then it works for every computer plugged in to it.

how the heck do i do that? lol, its just a little box. isnt a lan hub and a router different( i thought a router connected to the internet directly, we connect to the hub which is connected to the main comp too)

A router connects to the Internet and forwards data to the computers connected to it. Using a hub is like using a splitter on your phone line, all it does it split your connection between several computers.

What router have you got? (Manufacturer name and model name)

I have no idea, then. Are you running a software firewall?

Yes. His mother's machine is the 'router', which is more likely just an XP box running ICS.

And yes, you'll have to modify the settings on your Mom's computer. That's where the ports will need to be opened.
However, the ports are OUTBOUND. Which means they auto-open themselves. 'Opening' the ports only needs to happen on restrictive 'home routers' (another term I have a problem with, as they aren't actually routers at all).

More likely, either your LAN is misconfigured, or your ISP is blocking traffic on those ports, bidirectionally. Try plugging the phone line into your machine, or running Steam on your Mom's machine. If it works, it's that the LAN is screwed. If it doesn't, your ISP is port-filtering.
