What Is The Difference Between A Managed & Nornal?

<div class="IPBDescription">related to dedicated web hosting...</div> I am reading up on on some web hosting packages and there always seem to be either managed, windows or linux servers. Now what I am asking is what is managed servers.

Now windows and linux servers are pretty obvious but what is up with managed servers? Is it usually just that they manage the server for etc or sumthin?

    They look after the server.

    Should it need patching, they patch it. You'd be surprised how many customers we have that wander in with their shiny rackmount, refuse all (for monetary reasons) support we offer with "no no no, I'm <insert random IT qualification here> you know, I know how to do this" and then 8 hours later, we're pulling the server back out because it's been h4xed.

    Yes, we have had them disappear in a torrent of warez & porn in under 6 hours.
