    Yeah, I was waiting for this to get up here.

    Pretty amazing what those hornets can do. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Not really, it is just that the hornets exploit the fact the bees are incredibly deficient in the tactics department. If you observe video footage of such battles, you will see that the bees attack the hornets one at a time in single file (or what would be if you analysed the battle). Now this works fairly well for some creatures, like spiders or other potential threats which don't particularly fight back that well, but hornets are a tad bit too clever. The hornet simply waits and chops each bee apart one by one until they run out of defenders to kill. They then raid the nest and kill the queen, taking the ultimate prize-the juicy larvae!

    Japanese bees however would be much better opponents. Instead of idiotically attacking a far superior foe one by one, the japanese bees swarm over the hornet, but oddly do not sting it. Instead, they pile on top of it and cover it in a living mat of buzzing bees. This causes the internal temperature, where the hornet is, to rise above 48 degrees celcius, which ends up killing the hornet. Once dead they then go back to whatever they were doing.

    Much more efficient.

    The above effect incidently, is due to European bees having not evolved alongside hornets and having no significant defences against them. Japanese bees however have, and can quite readily deal with them. I really want to go to Japan and have a look at them for myself to be honest.

    Hmm, interesting camera-work. I figured at least some of it was fake (ie: convenient dramatic shots of the hornets staring down the bees), but still very very interesting.

    As for getting the link to work : it didn't work for me in Opera, but worked fine through IE. You can also open the file through Windows Media Player.

    No, that is pretty much what happens. The hornets are pretty smart and will happily wait for the bees to come marching forward single file to their doom.

    Correct, I believe it denatures proteins and actually causes the hornets blood to boil, pretty much killing it very dead.

    Oh man that scared the crap out of me. Though I think I have seen a hornet-looking thing that was bigger than that. It kills tarantulas then drags it somewhere safe and puts its babies inside it. Then when they grow they eat their way out of it.

    Yeah, some parasitic wasps can get fairly big however they are not interested in attacking you. Unfortunately, giant hornets will quite happily attack people if they feel like it, and this can be lethal.

    I just saw the whole thing (only on 56k, so it takes a year to download), but their video editing is pretty over dramatic (especially their choice in music). The bits that look fake however are real (to go back to something mentioned earlier), it is just they are using extremely high speed cameras which make things look rather surreal (like in slow motion). In reality most things occuring in that little battle would of been going extremely quickly, particularly the mid air fights.

    The video was like 30000 (no-upgrade) marines trying to knife 30 3-hive(regeneration & adrenaline) onii. Poor bees.

    I would declare war on those things if they came here in Finland and tried to kill those funny looking round bumblebees. They just look so funnay, though they might attack you (just like gorges; they look cute, but are dangerous if you get too close).

    Omg, I found an image

    Reminds me of playing the last level of Halo on co-op and Legendary difficulty. The Flood just keeps coming and we just keep knocking them down. Esp. funny after you blow of their attacking arm and they just sit there sometimes, waiting for you to blow their heads off.

    The hornets came swiftly and silently to collect their bounty, natural born killers ready for a massacre, but they weren't expecting to find their enemies armed with a secret weapon....

    The good thing about being a human is you can anihilate most scary bugs with a few sprays of nice deadly chemicals.
