Yes, Valve supports its community, and knows a good thing when they see it.

i wouldnt sell the rights to ns2 to valve. valve would just beat it with an ugly stick :/. this mod is probably one of the most creative mods i have ever seen on any game. i cant wait for halloween so i can play this great mod. the trailer is very nice, but it would of been cool if it was a bit longer on the gameplay beacuse i didnt catch a few things that would of been cool to watch for another 1-4 seconds <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo--> .
they only support the mods so the game stays alive and keeps the players. Half-Life it self wasnt anything new to the gameing community, mostly the mods have kept it alive and running so valve jumped in to keep it going. also dont forget they also made money for helping the counter-strike team out and putting it as a retail.
Oh yes Halflife was something new for the gaming community. Before Halflife were games like Quake 2 and Unreal and when Halflife came out it kicked their butts. Halflife showed that its possible to create a good story for an FPS game. It also used lots of scripting and featured AI teammates.
Natural seleciton... hmmmm, great for playing in public servers, incredible for clan matches/ praccies, and perfect for lan parties. Tasty, tasty, tasty. <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/skulk.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='::skulk::'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/skulk.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='::skulk::'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/asrifle.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='::asrifle::'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/pudgy.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='::gorge::'><!--endemo-->

You mean besides the plot and scripting, gameplay, auto-save/auto-load feature, AI quality, graphics, sound, music, skeletal animation system, multiplayer community, continuity through the game, and sheer fun factor?
Yeah, besides that, Half-life wasn't anything new.
