<div class="IPBDescription">Created a 14 player server. Need Advice</div> Okay, I decided to open up a server since my ISP just raised their upload cap.
We went from 40KB to 95KB.
I made a 16 player server and wanted to know at wich time I'd hit the wall.
10 players is fine. 12 players is good. Above 10 players, I see a weird effect. Sometimes we can be 14 and everything is just fine, pings in the 10-90. But sometimes we are 12 and pings are at 80-130. I'm talking about the same maps...
Anyways, the server is a:
AthlonXP 2000+
384MB PC133
K7S5A mobo
WinXP Pro with updates.
20gig 7200rpm maxtor hdd
Norton Antivirus 2004
Surecom 8 port switch connected to D-Link DI-604 router.
5 computers on the network. (the server, 3 gaming machine, 1 system for applications and work).
We are connected as a workgroup.
I'm also hosting a server with Bulletproof FTP for family and friends (extremmely low traffic, like 1-2 person per day) and using No-IP since I'm on cable and we haeva dynamic IP.
Any suggestions? So far we were having a blast. Playing CO maps with a time limit of 20 minutes.
Any plugins I should get? What about server software or admin software? Commands I should use? Settings?
Thanks all.

Assuming the former, I'm really surprised you have very little problem hosting a server on such a small amount of bandwidth. Especially with all the other goings on you have on your LAN... But hey, if it works don't mess with it, right?
As for mods, one of the nice things about running your own server is that you decide what to put on it. I or any of the other admins have our own opinions on how a server should be run, you should decide for yourself how you want yours. Visit modns.org and see if any of the mods strikes your fancy.
All the NS plugins/mods you'll ever need <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I used my fTP server to test my upload the other night, and my server was only uploadinga t 40-85KB (320kb - 680kb). I'm gonna have to run tests on other machines to see if it's the servers fault, or if it's simply high traffic from neighbours hoggin all the available bandwith.
Also, I've been looking into plugins, and all I want is a basic vote, kick, display text message plugin, but all I can find are these sophisticated hive health, lerklift, catalyst upgrade, etc.. plugins.. any suggestions?
Also, yesterday I was packed at 12-14 (out of a possible 14) for 2 hours, tonight I had a hard time keeping 6 people (1 came, 1 left, 1 came, 1 left, etc...). Any advice?
Thanks
If you get a port monitor you can find out how much traffic is being piped through. Also if you join the server from another computer remotely you should see if it is lagging or not.
I suggest a big custom map such as seige007.
turn on sv_cheats 1 and type bigdig.
Make as many turret factories as possible. if you can make over 100 you should be fine if the servers full.
maximum No. of players for a good server should be about 22 with 2 reserved slots (10 v 10).
More than that and it starts getting laggy when 8 ppl are shooting gl's (which is another good test).
amx mod & its plugins will provide you with everything you need as far as voting and lerk lifts etc.
remember the more plugins usually means more lag.
i suspect you are either ignorant or supid...
(hoping the first 1)
why on earth would you want a server (always on and more likely to be attacked) vulnrable to viruses?
antivirus, automatic updates, firewalls, etc. have a purpose.
dont be like a moron ex-boss of mine that turned that stuff off when i went on vacation to get a 5% increase on system resources...
when i came back 2 weeks later there were over 400 viruses and a dozen active connections that hackers were using to hack other computers (via our server)... later that day i even got a call from the FBI. I took the system off line, formated the system (after looking at what was on there all important data was trashed), 2 weeks of emplyees data/work was lost since the only good backup was the day i left, the manager was fired, and he had to go to court for aiding criminal activity though neglegence.
...turn off messenger services, run the system in non-gui, but never turn off security software!
PS: An unpublished servers IP that is unprotected is compromised typically in 15 minutes from it being online. Average commercial servers on high speed lines face 1-3 attacks per second.
