What Is The Most Stupid Thing In Ns?

The thing I dislike about NS the most is that it breeds these people who know a lot more about how to maximize their gaming, but won't tell anyone outside their close friends or clanmates.

Stuff like how to pancake as a lerk took me a little while to figure out on my own, and only because I was seeing so many people do it that I spectated and tried to figure out what they were doing to get that insane speed.

Also, most newbs still don't know what bunnyhopping is. It took me until 2.0 to figure out what bhopping was and how to actually do it.

Almost nobody knows how useful a button like ALT is when you bind +moveup to it. +moveup basically makes you go full speed straight upward, so as a skulk, instead of having your finger on SPACE or something, you put your thumb on ALT and you have no problem sticking to walls and cielings and running on them. You can even look down slightly while using +moveup, making it insanely useful for sticking on the roof but still being able to get above your target and drop behind them for the quick 180-bite. With +moveup bound to a button near +jump, you don't have to use forward to press against walls. In fact, you can hold your +moveup button and look almost straight down. What will happen is that you will start sliding forward on the roof, because the force behind +moveup is basically pushing you upward, depending on the direction you are facing. For instance, if you just hold +moveup on the ground facing forward, you'll start bouncing up and down because you are trying to go straight up without anything to hold onto.

I haven't experimented with +movedown, but I bet it isn't nearly as useful. Or maybe I'm wrong. I also haven't had much time to experiment with +moveup and +movedown for lerks, but I don't think it applies to them. If it did, you could probably pancake like a pro with binds to +moveup and +movedown, and just tap them back and forth. But that's not how it works, so.. Anyway.

I just learned last week that as a skulk, you actually go slightly faster if you look 45 degrees against the ground. It makes it nearly impossible to see where you're going or if there's anything in front of you, but you can get extra speed down straight corridors if you line up, then shift your mouse downward a bit. If you go onto your own server and turn on SV_cheats 1, then turn on CL_showspeed 1 I think, it will display how many units you're travelling at. You can get around 410-420 or so by looking diagonally at the ground while you're running. I don't know if this works for all alien lifeforms or for marines, but it works for skulks.

Natural Selection has all these little-known facts and tricks to play just slightly better than average, and nobody hears about them because nobody seems to ever talk about them. Or if they do get mentioned, it's only between leet clan guys who never say anything specific about how to properly do them.

I'm sure I'll be told there are demos and asking will get you answers, but it would be a lot more fair if we didn't have to all go to the trouble of looking these things up by ourselves when someone could probably write a two page guide explaining them.

Swift Idiot: I agree. I have known about bunnyhopping just before 2.0, and I still can't find anything that tells me a good way to do it. So I'm stuck as an alien, going normal speed, using the stock abilities to get the job done. While as a marine, I have to worry about that damn bunnyhopper that can come down a corridor to me in a second, and have to be frustrated that such a person can do it and I can't. Would ay be willing to right a guide or PM me a way to get better at it?

Not the actual attack, as many people seem to think. I just hate what it is.

Battle hardened and trained marines freeze and CAN'T FIRE THEIR WEAPONS AT THE HUGE ALIEN DEATH COW RUNNING AT THEM BECAUSE THE GROUND SHOOK A LITTLE? COME ON!

Make it into a cloud of spores or a shower of those old paralysis needle things, because i refuse to believe that marines would freeze on the spot, unable to even RELOAD or FIRE their weapons, because the ground shook from something that wouldn't even measure on the ricter scale.

Imagine a 2 ton rhino stomping the ground in front of you. Now, via whatever motion, he directs the wave forward in a shockwave.

Now, it may not register on any richter scale, but let's see how well you stand in an earthquake.. Let alone a shockwave directed AT YOU.

The marines may not have an animation for falling down.. but they sure do get up quick for being knocked on the ground.

As for my pet Peeve: Idiots who complain about ability x, hive y not being good enough, for Z being overpowered because they got owned in one combat game.

-pancaking
-marines having unlimited stamina (jumping like ret--ds)
-clan stackers
-people who think clan stacking is ok
-bunnyhopping
-having almost infinite air time with jp by managing it right
-having buildings fall out of the sky magically
-cloaking not being 100%
-cheaters
-abusive admins

pancaking is done in beta 4 by a lerk: tapping space fast enough to be able to go straight up to the ceiling and straight down, making it extremely hard to kill the lerk. sporing or umbraing while pancaking owns anything.

^^^^^^
Above post is incorrect

You don't mash your jump button. You can, MAYBE, but it's a whole lot easier to just bind +jump to mousewheel up and mousewheel down. You then do your flying just by rolling your middle finger up and down over the wheel. It spams the jump command so fast, you're flapping so quickly that the sound almost doesn't register before the next one cuts over. If you want an analogy, we can call these people hummingbird lerks. Now the reason pancaking works only in the up and down direction is because lerks don't have a cap on their up and down flight speed. Rolling the mousewheel will make you go fast straight forward, but you won't be going at warp 9 or anything either. It's only when you let go of all the directional buttons that you break the speed cap, because when you're not pressing any direction, you shoot up like a rocket no matter where you're looking. Now, all you do at this point is look straight down, and when you want to swoop down at insane speed, you start pressing forward. You instantly hummingbird flap into the ground, but lerks don't take fall damage or this would instagib you. Now you let go of forward, and you shoot straight back up into the air. By rotating your view around in circles, you go up and down zigging and zagging from one end of any large room to the other, and unless you stop, slow down, or get very predictable, you're an extremely hard target to hit. With some well-placed spore while you're doing this, you can clear out rooms of marines, or set them up for skulks to take them out while they are distracted. Half the time nowadays, marines don't even bother that I've seen. Most of them try their best to ignore the insane hummingbird alien thing. Anyway that's how you do it. Go into your config.cfg file and bind mousewheel up and down and space to +jump, then go lerk on your private server and try it.

Once you manage switching between mousewheel spamming and tapping and holding space bar for precise hop-jumps to bite marines just out of range, you can really start getting gutsy with the lerk. If you mess up, you're completely toast, so the way I see it, high risk, high reward. That's the way it should be. This is a game. It's intellectual combat. The smarter guy wins. Whatever.

Bunnyhopping is for skulks and gorges mostly, but fades and onos a little, and marines a bit. I was about to explain it, but then I figured you people can be smart enough to use the Forum search function to look for "Bunny hopping" or "Bhopping" or "BS HAX EXPLOIT" or whatever.

I love clan/skill/emblem stackers. It makes me feel like the underdog when I'm on the other team, so I fight because I'm spiteful of them and I really really want to see them lose and feel stupid. It makes me want to play harder, which can't be a bad thing. Also, if you can't beat them, join them, and learn why they're so damn better than you and everyone else on the server.

I just hate that. SC first is a good strat. Often the aliens just loose because someone tells the other team right away that the sc was built.

But please don't start discussing wether sc first is good or bad, that has been discussed enought and doesn't lead anywhere. But I'm for it.

Sc is only good first if you know where to place them on the map...If you get a good SC network set up it can own.. But you have to have the 2nd and most of the time 3rd hive to win.. So it makes for a slow game.

2nd hive will come quick if you lock down choke points in map with sc/oc/active healing gorg...

Combat.

Now all i see are people in ns_ maps going "Whats this thing? Whys it shooting at me? Why can't i buy upgrades?" etc.

Also servers with co maps seem to be the most populated, whilst ns maps seem to be empty alot.

And unlike other games with a similar game play, e.g. counter-strike, if you join half way through a game you can hardley kill anything.

heh. in reply to the second quote; bunnyhopping really isn't the be-all-end-all of this game - I've seen plenty of players who can't bunnyhop for smeg but still dominate most games as alien.

lets have a quick look shall we: (results taken from www.google.com - search for "bunnyhopping tutorial")

number one
number two
number three

hmm. taking a total of about 30 seconds (including time taken to copy+paste the links into here + check the pages briefly to see what they were), i managed to find 3 bunnyhop tutorials on the first page of google results...

how is it you claim that you "still can't find anything that tells me how to do it"...................

[nb - i have no idea if the tutorials are any good or not - didn't bother reading them - just that they are infact bhop tutorials. there is average of 100+ people in NS chan, about 50% of which can bhop (at a VERY rough estimate of numbers) - most of them would probably try to explain it if you bothered to ask]
[nb2 - there are infact some amazingly good tutorials out there for bunnyhopping - i've seen a fair when looking to save me time of explaining to some one...]

The point is, bunnyhopping is supposed to be a part of NS. Yet it isn't explained ANYWHERE _HERE_. Sure, people can google, but many don't know WHAT it is in the first place anyway.

yes thats why bunnyhopping should be made easier (this isn't some mortal combat 20 button combo) and in the manual, or just plain removed.

BUT it is flarya's game and its his 'pet' so we have to live with it. DAMN YOU FLAYRA D:

That, and the fact that vanilla marines can take down onos, but vanilla skulks can't take down 2 HA+HMG+welder which is infact cheaper, not counting the fact that alien res is worth more than marine res.
