<div class="IPBDescription">According to Musician Janis Ian</div>A very interesting editorial by a winner of 9 Grammies and many multiple-platinum recordings. Far more cogent than most of the dumb arguments you hear from the napster-kiddies...

I believe I've read a rough pre-version of this over a link from userfriendly a while back - it contained a lot more anger against the music industry in general, but then, if you were told your own voice no longer belongs to you, how would you feel?

Aside from that, what am I supposed to say? I completely agree.

The amount of artists I hadnt even heard about until I started downloading music... Maybe the Britney Spears' and Micheal Jackson's of this world might feel a slight hit but all those who havent been in a pepsi ad can only benefit from more listeners.

Besides, Id personally prefer to be a moderately well-off (enough to enjoy and maintain a reasonable lifestyle) artist and have everyone in the world listening to my stuff then a filthy rich with alot less listeners.

Yes, her original essays are a bit longer, but very well thought-out, and I highly suggest reading them.  The first essay created such a stir within the RIAA that she wrote a follow-up essay not long after.

    <a href="http://www.janisian.com/article-internet_debacle.html" target="_blank">The first essay</a>.

    <a href="http://www.janisian.com/article-fallout.html" target="_blank">And the second</a>.

Edit: Oh, and MonsE, she was only (heh, *only*) nominated for nine Grammies, she didn't actually win nine Grammies.

I'm glad to read these.  I know some time ago a thread about P2P music sharing was started and I said that because I had the access to new music I bought more CD's than I ever had.  And, wow look at that- I'm not the only one experiencing such an awesome phenomenon.  Spiffy.
