Can buildings block you?

can buildings be put in such a way that you can't move around them? like could they be in your way when you want to try to get somewhere? can you move them slowly after they have been built? do you have to build exactly where the commander says or can you build near that instead?

yes, buildings block your path. though the bounding box for them is usually waist-high, so you can easily jump over most building, marine or alien.

And yah, you have to build them where the commander says.

so if the commander doesnt know the best building spots someone who does would be a better commander (saying their equal in other parts) kind of like being an mg in dod means having fast reactions and knowing good mg spots ?

I dont think the marines will really bother to block passageways with buildings, the only alien that could be blocked is a gorge.

Maybe they could block up vents though?

i think it would add a layer of depth to the building thing, and also contibute to the marines' gerneral identyfiablity, becasue it promotes inveintive thinking, something soldiers have done since the begining of time.

In responce to Necro, its more like in TFC, where experienced engineers know where to built turrets and ammo dispensers more effectively than n00b engineers. Its something that's quite easy to pick up, as logic would dictate where most stuff should go anyway. I.e. turrets near entryways, armory near the respawn pads, stuff nobody but commander uses like Arms Lab go in the back of the base where they are least likely to be hit in any firefight. Of course there are always strategic deviations of this, but that's the general idea. Its one of those hard to explain/easy to catch onto when seen type things...

he means well, he's comparing based on his RTS experience.

the thing with NS though is it isn't a pure RTS.

in most RTS games unless you're in the corner of the map, you are vunerable from all directions. Not so in NS maps, where there is usually only 1 or 2 entrances (and perhaps a vent entrance).

also in most RTS games, there is usualy a while to wait before they attack you, unless they rush. In NS this is not the case, they can attack anytime, very begining or whenever, which doesn't leave you a lot of time to decide where to place each building.  Doom's idea therefore sounds pretty good, a generic normal idea that can take on many variations depending on the terrain, makes sense neg?

Buildings can theoretically block people, but they can also be destroyed.  Marine buildings pretty much can't be used as blocks; all aliens can jump over or otherwise maneuver around (or, in the case of Onos, through) them.  Alien buildings can be stacked, however, which means marines will occasionally encounter Jurrgen's patented Wall O' Turrets And Defensive Chambers.

However, a few grenade clips usually solve "problems" like this, and it's very expensive in terms of RPs, so you'll seldom see it.

Oh, and Siege turrets eat large clusters of chambers for breakfast.  With pie.

Isnt it kinda obvios that the useless stuff (SD or acadamy in SC for example) ggoes at the very back, while the defence and production things go at the front?? I mean, only a ####### computer would do the opposite.(that is unless you havent played RTS games be4)

Hey, hey! Some RTS games have good AI when building bases. Warcraft III on insane is pretty... insane.

Anywho, I think it's really going to be interesting to try the commander view. (me being a huge RTS fan and all) That is, while I'm not being completely owned in the FPS aspect. <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo--> lol

Well okay, I'm not that bad.

Anyway, now it's time to make my second emoticon comic about the wall-o-offensive-defense™.

actually, a few of the beta testers are from starcraft only, and haven't play much (if any) fps games, and they do quite well :P
