But of course, I'm not too excited about TF2. Never was....

I don't know why anyone is suprised with this; if they had canned TF2 to focus on other titles, they would have said so. It has an excellent design (at least from what I read about in the original previews), and I don't think they'd want to give up the selling power of the TeamFortress name.

TF2 was never canned. Not even put on hold. You think you've been waiting for Duke Nukem Forever? We've been waiting for TF2 so long that everyone else forgot about it.
The issue has always been the perfectionism of the Team Fortress team, and Valve. Which led to them changing engines over and over. Now that they've got a l33t engine that can do everything they need, there's no more holdup.
The sad thing is that TF2 was going to have gameplay mechanics that were incredible and awesome and revolutionary for their time. Two I can think of in particular are a commander, and "when you die, you don't die but are wounded and a medic can come along and revive you". That was before RtCW, by the way. In the time it's taken to make this game, another game has risen, used an idea from TF2, and died. The mind boggles.
I hope it's still fun, even though we're already well used to (what we know were) the selling-point features.
Keep in mind the last Team Fortress preview was well before there was ever this "counter-strike" thing, so I don't think that brand name recognition is such a strong factor any more. But if the project is being kept alive because Valve genuinely believes in it, well then that's a great thing. We might never play it, but still. :P
It was back in the day though... Most of you weren't around (hell some of you aren't even old enough) but back in the day Team Fortress was the be-all-to-end-all that Counter-Strike is today. So if you don't remember it then it might be easy to dismiss the news or to not understand why Valve put the faith in TF2 that they did.
Fun history/trivia fact: Originally Team Fortress 2 was supposed to be for Quake 2. That's right, Quake 2. Hundreds of old school TF fans bought Quake 2 just to play TF2, and were then outraged when they found out some upstart nobody ever heard of named Valve bought the rights to TF and hired the mod dev team to make the game a free addon for their up and coming game "Half-Life".
So when Half-Life comes out, hundreds of people buy Half-Life just to play Team Fortress 2. Valve then announced TF2 to be a standalone product, and fans are furious. To appease fans for few months until TF2 hits the shelves (ha!) Valve creates and releases Team Fortress Classic, which marks the turning point for Half-Life's multiplayer from forgotten-bombshell to smash-hit.

Team Fortress was Quake. Team Fortress Classic was Half Life.
Sorry, but this article is total bullplop. There is no scoop, no new information. The quote from Lombardi comes not from IGN doing any work, but simply from something Lombardi said MONTHS ago that they just copy pasted from someone else.
TF2 is indeed still in development, and is on Source, but this is not not not new news at all. The newsposters on gaming sites are just getting lazy.

TF for Quake was oldschool. It was like, the first big mod, after CTF, and CTF was a server-side only mod for a while: they just used existing Quake entities to represent the grappling hook and "flags" which were.... popquiz: anyone remember what original Quake CTF used for flags?

I'm pretty sure valve mentioned that TF2 had been worked on during the quietness, but since they had switched to the Source engine they couldn't say anything without ruining the HL2 secrecy. This being about a year ago when HL2 was first announced.
