<div class="IPBDescription">Can anyone please give me a reason.</div> Ok I know its kind of obvious that swear filters are there to make a discussion board clean and all.

But how do u put a valid reason on enforcing a swear filter when someone puts up all that freedom of speech stuff?

I am jsut trying to figure out what would be a good argument on this topic here

I was thinking if you put it in real life, if you were speaking your mind in a meeting, would you be swearing away etc.

    Well, theres always the good old "The freedom of speech you have is that the GOVERNMENT of the United States of America will not try and limit your speech. Seeing as this board/forum/etc is not run by the US government, you have no right to claim freedom of speech."

    Back that up with something akin to "Its as if you are walking into someone's house and claiming that you can say anything you want because you have the freedom to do so."

    The First Amendment guarantees you the right to speak in public, or to speak against the government.

    Most internet forums include a Terms of Usage agreement on which you must click "I agree" before you can register to post. Ours is this: <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums.html' target='_blank'>http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums.html</a> . Forums are a privately owned entity, and can enforce rules as they see fit. As all of our users agreed to our no-swearing policy, they have no grounds to legally question it.

    Looking at the post you linked, it does seem that an overly zealous swear filter goes against the spirit of the organization for which the board exists (at least according to the first poster). Hell (uncensored), not even *these* boards censor the word "balls." <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    ok, censoring balls is silly

    however, swearing IS NOT A GOOD FORM OF EXPRESION!

    especialy if you are having a discusion/debate.

    As soon as one side starts swearing it is nolonger rational speach, it is now emotional speach.

    As for why it is so here?
    well, we are a pg 13 comunity <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> (leaning more to pg then the 13 aspect generaly)

    Or a date. Unless you're in the middle of the wanky-wanky, don't swear on a date. :\

    The swear filter is fine, as a whole. And yeah, i'm glad for having it. I mean, it's nice to have freedom of speech and such, but when people pretty much punctuate each word with obscenities, it's out of hand.

    <s>On the other hand, why does this board censor the word damn .... er... d a m n?</s> Ok, bizarre, it censored that earlier today.......
