How Come We Can't See What Weapon Is Selected

<div class="IPBDescription">Is this permanent?</div> I'm trying to become a good skulk, without scripting, and part of that is learning to use the "lastweap" command to switch quickly from leap to bite or xeno to leap, etc.

Unfortunately, there is no longer any readout on the top of my screen as to which weapon I have selected. I have no way of knowing if I am currently on xeno or leap: whether pressing fire will make me blow up or jump. The only way I can see it is by first pressing a weapon key, and then mouse scrolling: which then scrolls through all the weapons and has to be selected even though I have weapon fastswitch on.

Why was this taken out? WAS it taken out, or am I just missing something? Is it being redone for the next release? As far as I'm concerned, the weaponlist was very important for helping both new players and experienced ones know which weapons they have, and without it, I'm messing up quite a bit without need.

Try adding a different crosshair to bitegun, leap, and xenocide. That will allow you to differentiate.

SImple solution: If you're not sure...reselect your weapon. If you know you want bite, then just press 1 again and you're fine.

Ehh....one solution would be to manually change your weapons.

The other way, is more of an improvement for the skulk. You can get a leap crosshair from the Customization forum. Just search for 'leap crosshair' and you should be all set.

Or you can search for Xenocide crosshiar, and follow the link in there to the right thread.

    hud_fastswitch 0

It will help you choose at least

That's all well and good: but it doesn't answer why the selection icons are gone with fastswitch. What purpose does that serve? And doesn't it just confuse new players?

fastswitch 1 is made so that pressing the corresponding number changes to the appropriate skill without you having to click your mouse to confirm your selection.

If you don't like that, why have fastswitch 1?

    hud_fastswitch 1 ftw

Perhaps you meant that you used to have cl_autohelp 1 enabled, that shows you each attack name, but it shows a load of other tips too.

Hud_fastswitch 1 makes it so you select the weapon you have choosen, now in every HL game I have played, if you have this cvar set, it will not pop up the "description" or "icon" for the weapon you have selected.

If there were 3 weapons under slot 1, then it would pop up, and you would have to hit 1 how ever many times in order to get to that weapon (example is marine welder/nade/mine slot), but since aliens have only 1 weapon per slot, this doesn't happen, and will not happen with the HL engine with that cvar set.

So to answer your question, this is by design, there is nothing you can do to get those "icons" to come back unless you turn off fastswitch (which then requires a click to activate the attack).

Or the other suggestions of having a different icon for each attack is highly plausable, and I would suggest that, or to change your default settings for the slots so that it is easier to do the bite leap combo, without having to worry about hitting xeno or parasite.

Also, after a while of doing it, you get to instinctively recognize which weapon is active (or atleast be able to tell what weapon is NOT active) just from the teeth/claws/horn/etc and the way they are positioned/animated

Frankly this is why I don't like using lastweapon, I don't like having to think about what I have selected before I hit the button. Personally I set Q to Slot1, E to Slot 2 or 3(Fade or Skulk), and right mouse to Slot 3(Fade only, makes for very easy meta/blinking).

Because whether you hav to click your mouse, and whether you see what weapon is selected (along with it's name and icon, for new players) are two entirely different issues.

Why not? Is it hardcoded into Half-life or something?

The two situations are mutally exclusive; you either have to click your mouse to select, or you dont. You can't have both. :S

You want a way to permanently show what weapon you have selected at the top left of the screen? Ie, keep the "bite" sprite there permanently. Sorry, but AFAIK this can't be done. Is it really that hard to re-select the weapon again if you are not sure? There's only four weapons, and pressing a button only takes a fraction of a second.

Besides, as has been mentioned, crosshairs are available to differentiate between the different weapons. (Obviously not for aiming. Why aim with xeno or leap?)

I believe it is the game engine that causes it to be like this. I have played a few mods of HL in my day, and they were all the same.

Games played: CS, Opera, NS, DoD, HL, TFC, etc...

What happens is if you only have one choice, and fastswitch is on, then it goes instantly to that weapon...the only time the weapon choice "icons" come up with fastswitch enabled is when you have more than 1 weapon/skill available per slot...
