Try to run it in compatibility mode for Windows NT then.
I never tried using this, but it's there, and it might help you.

Rightclick the shortcut, hit the drawer compatibility (if it is called that in the English version), and check the box, choose the OS you want to simulate.

    Good luck.

(btw: B&W was boooooring, total disappointment)

I dunno, I loved Black & White. Totally open environment, do whatever you want with your little minions, good stuff for me. I converted villages, then destroyed their houses for wood and killed their children for food for my insanely huge metropolis by my temple. I then took diseased grain and gave it to an enemy village until only one sick villager was left (the others died of illness/starvation), then i saved him, took all the food and wood, and killed him off. I taught my giant mutant cow how to raze villages. I catapulted burning rocks at the enemy villages until they all eventually burned to the ground and starved.

    Very open ended game.

I never finished it, mainly because my slow system at the time was choking on the fireworks during the last level. But I went for the good side of things, a little hellfire every once in a while, but generally good.

I never tried finishing it, maybe that's why i'm one of the few who liked it. I didnt bother with trying to finish the levels until i sucked all the interesting bits out of the land i was in.

It works on my Windows 98 computer but not this WinXP...and I think I tried it in all compatability modes, when I go back home I can see if I can get it to work.

I just remember a part on the second level (...yea, that's as far as I got, but, hey, I played it for at least 30 hours of game time). The Win98 system was pretty bad, I was surprised it ran, but it did, it just went slow when I cast magic.

And I loved that exploit before the patch where you could cast a wood/grain spell and keep clicking for insane amounts of wood or grain...instead of the 500 or so it's intended to give.

    PS - tatoos on your animal are dumb <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

All I can say is Black and White 2 looks awesome. Very awesome. I wasn't a big fan of the original, but it was o.k.

On one of the levels, I just created a massive number of wonders (food and wood increased)

So the more I made the more I could make with less trouble, my people were never hungry. And on that level, there was no enemy, just objectives.

Okay, I've got my CD here, and the CD key (which I had lost before, go figure), but it wont install now. It brings up the InstallShield Wizard, and then it just blanks out and stops (all processes and Applications linked to it stop). I have no idea how it installed that one time (the game didn't work, but it did install...maybe it's the XP service packs).

There were a few suggestions I saw, there was close all processes except explorer and something else, but that's unrealistic, as there are programs that XP needs to run greater than that (at least, when I close them I get a restarted computer (sometimes in 60 seconds or something). Then there was one that says delete Windows XP hotfix KB824141, but I'm not deleting anything advised that can screw up my OS with inappropriate information (and it seemed as though it was only for the expansion).

I've tried Explore on the CD and going to setup manually, chaning the compatability, but it still pops up the Installation screen and then closes right away. Sure, there's the patches (and all I can find is 1.3, which supposedly screws it up even more - and Fileplanet is the only one with 1.1 and 1.2 - but they have some [censored] [censored] file system crap going on that never starts downloading (despite the server would be at 371/450 people).

So, anyone found any more information on how I can get it to install?

I hate to rain on your parade here but, I whipped out my B&W disc and popped it in. No run. Once I got it to install but it crashed after verifying the disc. Oh well...I tested every single thing suggested everywhere on this, and it looks like it just isn't going to work. Sorry man <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

'when you download the 1.3 patch(you should have if you did ANY research) and you try to open the game it will say "missing p5dll.dll". download this file and put it in the SAME FOLDER as the game application. worked for me.'

edit i cant find the .dll anywhere.. however i have the patch and i can upload it to my server if anyone needs it

Use the 1.2 patch, unless you have the P5 glove. Works fine for me on XP.

i realize this prolly wont help, but i can install it on an XP Pro system (maybe it is one of the service packs that does it??)

it plays, but i get 000% of the music, just sound and speech

here is the p5dll (if it lets me attach)

I understand how the patches might help it run, but it craps out on me on the install (still no idea why it worked that one time, probably screwed up by a service pack). Since I can't patch the CD the game is on, is there anything that will help me install it in the first place?
  • UltimaGeckoUltimaGecko hates endnotes Join Date: 2003-05-14 Member: 16320Members
Okay, if anyone was having a similar problem as me:

copy your entire CD's contents to a folder and install it off of your hard-drive instead of off the CD. It works fine (I also don't get my cool infinite wood and food exploit...but whatever.

[edit] After reinstalling twice it managed to install the files right so that they could be patched. So, nevermind the following.[edit]

    Hey, guess who's back?

I've got so many black and white files, I don't know what to do with them all <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> . I've got it working unpatched and everything, but I really want to get patch 1.1 or 1.2 on there.

Except it wont let me. I get

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No upidate done since file contents do not match.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

the file is LHmultiplayerR.dll (there might be more, but this is where it stops). I have no idea what it's talking about, because I haven't edited it, and I haven't patched it and it's from right after the game came out, so the patch isn't included.

Does anyone have the original that I could replace it with, which might coax it into patching?
