Yet another help thread
I've been looking at getting a new card recently and I've narrowed my options down to the following two, so please don't convince me to try and get another.

ATI Radeon 9600 Pro - £165

NVIDIA Geforce FX 5700 - £90 - £100

I've used Nvidia's cards before and I've been happy but I've heard good things about ATI. I'm a little weary about shelling out £165 though. I currently use a Geforce 4 MX440 and I'm in desparate need of an upgrade. What would you guys suggest? I would like this to last me for a while.

Thanks in advance.

Definately ATI. No question about it.

I switched from NVidia to ATI and not a moments regret.

And for the price: The quality - Price ratio is tenfold compared to
NVidia. They make you pay a lot for a little.

Radeon 9600 256 mb version. Right now ATi has it all together, and GeForce has too many bugs(they JUST BARELY fixed their problem with bump mapping, and it still is pretty crappy, all things considered). I love 3DFX(aka NVidia after they bought 'em), but ATi is just doing better in ALL aspects right now, by a lot of FPS.

I went out and got the ATI card. The improvement is just ! In comparison to my mx440 it rocks!

get the ATI, BUT get the 9600xt version, the chip is somewhat improved.btw 165, i know thats in pounds, but what is that in american money? $165? or what? i know the dollar took a fall but that was a couple of months ago, i was just wondering cause you can get a radeon 9600pro 256mb here for $105

Or you could wait a while for PCI express to come out, and from the fallout of that 9800 XT's will drop dramatically.

Might aswell keep the GF2. He's got an MX.

shhhh. that was my plan, but...

NVidia cards arnt as slow as they were, what was that 6 months ago, the guys down the hall have the same comp, both built their own with same specs cept for vid card(they are cousins) one loves NVidia the other ATI, the NVidia is the new 5900 i believe and the ATI is the 9800xt i am possitive, the ati just dont run as fast, especially at high res

dude, get on ebay and grab a 9700Pro 128 for way less money than that...
  • Domo-KunDomo-Kun Join Date: 2004-03-18 Member: 27410Members
no dotn get a 9700 pro it isnt built by ati it is only powered by, meaning ALMOST same quality, breaks easily. btw comparing vid cards isnt the only thing you need to see what kind of cpu you have and mobo, also the speed of ram, it all factors in cause, well not really just the cpu an mobo cause crappy mobo means you dont work the card as much as it can get worked, an if you have a crappy cpu youll get crappy fps.. always go athlon, with asus mobo. youll be good.

I'd take the R9600 too, but keep in mind, random people has been having fps problems with HL when using higher end ATi cards. Im not sure if HL is (still) a factor for you, but if it is, take this into consideration.

Note: its random PEOPLE having problems, NOT people having random PROBLEMS. I hear omega drivers solve it though..

monkey.....i fergot about that, hes right tho, omega drivers seem to solve things.'

I ran HL with absolutely zero problems with this card. I was actually bracing myself for poor HL performance. You also get this thing called "Smartshaders" which let you make some pretty insane effects. One was called "sketch" which made everything black but have a white outline.

The new ATI R420, and Nvidia's NV40 coming out soon. I'd wait untill then when 9800XT prices will divebomb.

Funny that most publications and websites are saying the exact opposite.

My next card is going to be an ATi with PCI Express tech, my current card is a GeForce 4 Ti 4600 128MB. You can have mine, Black Mage, but only once the faster PCI comes out. I'd recommend buying a new computer at that point, it's what I'm doing, my current rig was a steal back in 2000, but it's starting to show its age with titles like UT2K4.

I say, once again, I believe that nVidia cards have a slight FPS advantage in OpenGL (Until you crank up AA), but ATi cards seem to have a larger advantage in DirectX 9 (Especially when you crank up AA).

I say good choice with the Radeon, and Smartshaders own.

P.S. That was a prompt buy...

ATI all the way that is if you have the money, but it is by far worth the extra cost. NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!
