Full Steam support - Official Steam support, including a new NS desktop, friends list, and automatic updating. NS will be listed under the "My Games" section (not as a 3rd-party mod).

VALVe Anti-Cheat (VAC) - VAC means that NS and Half-life are updated automatically when new cheats are found. Any cheaters detected by the system are immediately temporarily or permanently banned across all NS servers.

When Will This Be Happening I Cant Wait???

    Right, like they ever find any new cheats.... VAC is teh ultimate useless anti-cheat client. (Yes it is downloaded and run as a client).

    1. Yes, you download it. But it goes into your cache, not anywhere on your hdd

    2. No, you don't run it as a client (like CD). You join a server, it downloads it, it checks for cheats, you play.

    yah, its out when its out. These are officaly planed for 3.0, however I am guessing they will be the last ones done.

    As for VAC?
    there is no such thing as good anti cheat. All anti cheat procs (save watchful admins) have multiple cheats they will not detext (simple googles will show you this honestly)

    so VAC is realy no better nor worse then any others. It just catches more flak b/c alot of people think it is cool to bash valve, thus VACs problems are brought up more often then other ones.
    All Anti cheat tech hasproblems For instance CD is notorious for making mods either not work, or break in anoying ways (that and being compleatly incompatible with VAC). The last version of PunkBuster(for RTCW:ET) BSoDed my comp when ever I tryed to play a gme ussing it ;(

    The way I see it with VAC is that unlike CD you have to download it everytime you play , it adds another 20seconds onto connection to a server when on 56k and about 10 with ADSL.

    Also, maybe im wrong and please dont start a 'CD 15 t|-|3 wIn' argument, most people in the community trust CD more than VAC and it is a one time only download, well until an update <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Untill Valve sinks some good time and money into VAC, it will always remain sub-par and below CD most likely

    I know CAL next season is gonna enfource CD (almost certain on this...) and disable VAC.

    I can't wait for that, great move on CAL's part

    The nice part about VAC is that it bans hackers for 5 years from all servers there are. This is why I thjnk that if VAC is being updated frequently, it will be far superior to CD, or any other 3rd party anti-cheat tool, simply because the punishment is alot 'scarier'.

    Yeah, VAC is tied in with a system that basically knocks cheaters out cold. No matter how slow they are to add new cheats, the fact that those caught with cheats will basically lose the use of their game is a pretty powerful punishment.

    The main problem is that it almost never catch any cheats. And there are tons of cheat sites which lists which cheats are detected and which are not, with half a brain cell you will NOT be caught.

    You could think of it this way. IRL (depending on where you live) it is death penalty for killing someone, however you would only get this penalty if you get caught. To get caught you would need law enforcers.     The primary purpose of any anti-cheat program is to stop stupid script kiddies anyway, not determined cheaters. Nobody's come up with an effective way to prevent new cheat work-arounds yet; as long as anti-cheat programs have to react to cheats instead of preventing them they'll never work all the time.

    script kiddies is an old term. It basicaly refers to people who have some where between jack and squat actualy computer knowledge, but think they are leet b/c they can download and use other peoples progies.

    Included in this is:
    run of the mill stupid cheater.
    Those people that use mIRC scripts to flood chanels
    Paswoord fishers (ussing other peoples pos progie)
    etc etc etc.

    They don't actualy have the slightest idea what they are doing. (As in no, this isn't having to deal with HL Scripting <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->)

    And as I said before, there is no 'good' anti cheat.
    If you go to those same pages that list all the cheats and what is detected by what, you will see there are just as many undetected by CD as there are by VAC. VAC just getts a worse rep b/c it is still 'cool' to bash valve.

    Anyone calling VAC crappy doesn't have much sense. One thing I've found: Those that accuse VAC of sucking, generally suck themselves and are just sore losers. VAC is a nice piece, I've seen TONS of people get banned for the hacks. And unlike CD, which will ban people when it THINKS there are hacks(leading to bans for system anomalies), VAC makes sure with a triple check, and a full confirmed cheat. Its cheats are updated CONSTANTLY. From what I've seen, VAC gets a new cheat added about every 3 days. Just remember- its not that hard to make your own cheat, so in the process, many people go about doing it.

    Stop bashing VAC.

    And full steam support will be once VALVe puts it in for non-retail mods. If I remember correctly, Flay has already sent it in with a link(or someone else has).

    actualy NS was to be a Full Steam suported game befroe it was opened up to the public (he has been working with Valve for a some time now, even since NSv1)


    And again, for cheats?
    people create new one constantly.
    The battle vs cheats is on where the hackers are by necesity one step ahead.
