Game Sizes...

The 6vs6 vs 12vs12 vs 16vs16 ect...
Which size do you think would fit NS best in terms of:

Balance

Fun factor

Science fiction

Choose one from the list and which size would be the best for it...can always choose a size for each of the settings if you so wish...

Anyway, balance is just that...balance...strength of marines vs aliens...and use the current beta as a reference...and of course your personal preference

Fun factor, do you enjoy large games or small games in general?

Last one, the science fiction, may sound a bit odd, but what I mean with it is this: In movies ect for instance it's always a small group of marines/people vs an overwhelming force of aliens, basically technological superiority and power vs quantity...one marine/soldier whatever can gun down a dozen aliens before going down...
Now, I know that NS doesn't have a 10-15 marines vs 20-50 aliens option or some such, but roughly, what number of players on both sides would you think would be fun in NS, with regard to the "sci-fi" term?

I think balance and fun for 3.0 is 7v7(it used to be 6v6). This will make it a little slower for aliens to get hive and fade as appose to 6v6 which I think is needed. Also its easier to kill a fade with an extra person giving a better chance he will run into a marine while running away or that there is another marine by the one he is attacking.

16v16 marines have such an advantage. 20 res level 1 armor for 16 people versus all aliens getting 1 upgrade once = 32 res. Aliens would get raped(lucky to get fade in 5min and huge respawn time). Marines can spawn 3 at a time in 30sec of game start aliens 1 for first 5min.

4v4 or below marines have no chance even if the aliens arent that good(fade and hive in 2min gg, 2 marines leave base 4v1 raped, marines build base d jps ini 15min+, 20 res to give 4 marines armor 1).

The movie Aliens was a metaphor for Vietnam: The United States Colonial Marines is the most lean, tough, badass bunch to ever be assembled, but then they go into the field of battle totally unprepared for an enemy like the xenoforms. One by one, they get their heads handed to them on a plate, despite having smart-guns, pulse rifles, robotic sentryguns, squad tactics, an APC, and two dropships. All it takes to kill the Colonial Marines is a horde of expendable drone aliens with sharp teeth and the ability to fight and maneuver unconventionally. Aliens and for the most part any movie resembling Aliens is about the quagmire of fighting against organic guerilla forces.

I just thought I'd point that out for anyone wanting to write a term paper.

7v7 and 8v8 are the levels of competition you get on pubs, and not belonging to a clan or being big in the PUG scene, it's pretty much all I can get.

I did play a scrim back during that NS Draft thing, and I think 6v6 works a little like baseball. There are enough people in 6v6 so that you have a "Team" but since there are only 6 guys to go around, and the marines need a near constant com so make that 6v5, you get plenty of chances for individual achievement. 6v5 means someone is going to go Fade, and a large part of the game will depend on how elite the fade is and what the fade gets accomplished.

8v8 and above is more like football. Except without the passing. 12v12 games have brutal battles and nobody gets anywhere just doing their own thing. Large games build teamplay, I guess.

7v7 needs to be experimented with.

Fun factor, i think the smaller the better. Smaller = more intimate, and you get to know the people, and you're actually playing with them. Not just playing, and them being just random NPC type things...

2-4 vs in combat i like a lot. too much more and it gets too hectic, and just isn't as fun... combat was also made for games more of this size then the 24 player CO servers...

small games of classic are quite fun too, but in terms of balance, 7 vs 7 is very good. balance also makes for much fun.

Now, it would be awesome if we just got tons of 32 person servers or so, just because that fits the sci fi bit more, with tons of skulks all coming at you, running on walls and such... the more skulks the better...
Problem is how unbalanced it is in marines favor for those numbers.

2v2 in in 1.04 was awesome and not too bad in 2.01, but in 3.0 sucks hard for both combat and ns. In combat if the aliens move faster and can ge the cc faster. If the aliens go together and go around marines they can kill cc before marines kill hive In ns they can get 3 rts, 3 chambers, hive and fade in 5min. 1 fade verse 1 marine=game over.

I do like pulling out elite 2v2 moves as marine comm. I can follow a gorg by sound or here one gestate by rt. Then I drop the rt it is just about to build. They can never get a rt outside their hive and they spent all their time trying to destroy the rts. When they do get second hive I like to put cc on the rts they are about to build. Its mega elite.

6v6 is balanced. 7v7 is almost balanced. 8v8 is as large as it could get with both sides having a chance. Anyone who says larger doesn't know enough about the game.

The larger the game the more it tilts for the mariens, but even with huge teams the aliens still have a good chance, they just gotta keep the marines contained and get the 2nd hive up ASAP.
