The value of life

<div class="IPBDescription">What value is placed on life in ns.</div>I was just finishign spraypainting our car with the words NS. and was on my way to check the readyroom like I do 720 times a day (once every 5 minutes for a 24 period). I realized that NS. is going to play a lot different depending on the rate and penalty of a respawn. IE, If the respawning is like CS (once a round) or TFC (You die and count to two or thrree and boom, your back). Now before you accuse me of not knowing what I think your going to accuse me of not knowing, Yes I do know that respawns cost rps and controlled by the commander for humans and eggs for the aliens. What I want to know is how much penalty is placed on death? If the penalty is too harsh (5 minute respawn time, all rps gone), playing could become lethargic. If the penalty is too light (2 second count down, no rps taken), play could becoem mindless and unstrategic.

There will be no waiting to respawn if there are enough resourcepoints.
Otherwise you will have to wait.

I've often wandered this.  If an alien spawns, makes his way to, sy level4, and then gets killed, does he loose his level 4?  Also, is he has bought loads of special 'weapons' for himself, has he lost them too?

Hmmmm, I think there oughtta be. Just me, but otherwise some irritating or all too green player could get out of control by making idiotic decision or charging off to get torn to shreds, draggin the team. Putting a time limit would keep the rp's from getting sucked down a black hole.

If an alien dies, yep, he loses his current lifeform and upgrades.  He has to start over from scratch.

Both marines and aliens are limited in how fast they can respawn.  The infantry portals that bring marines back only respawn players every 30 seconds or so.  If the team has multipel portals, the wait will be decreased.  Also, if the team needs people back immediately (ie, the base is under attack), the commander can click the infantry portal and choose a "buy reinforcement" option that pays extra to bring him back immediately.

I definitely want the cost of life to be substantial, but you can't be out for the whole game because the games last 20 minutes or so. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

A decent system to keep lamers from dragging down the team could be easily enough put in.  The commander could set up a lineup for respawns, kinda like football.  The first string players would have dibs on the available rp's.  So if 2 marine's die around the same time, and there are only enough rp's available for one respawn, the first string player would get it and not the lamer... just an idea.

YAY!!! Thats exactly what I wanted. Ive always though that a respawn time like that might be good for DOD, cause it would really make people be cautious and startegic, like in real war. Thanks for the happy news flayra.
P.S. My avatars funny. Thats me spliced with bob. We should make that the level 6 alien. You can scan my face in and paste it to a CS head and stick it on bob. Sorry, this PS got kinda out of hand. Thanks again fo the reassurance and good info.

I don't like that mentality. You see, that way the lamers would never become non-lamers. Just like football in 4th grade. (in sweden football means soccer by the way)
aargh, fudge it! You get the point.

Will the commander be able to control how his resource points are spent when it comes to respawns? On one hand, it would really annoying for you with some asshat commander who never lets players back in, but I think he'd be better off being able to choose at the appropriate time <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

this wouldn't be fair. If you are a friend of the commander, or just known by him, you get placed higher on the list. Its just the way it works.

Nice, thanks for the info. Beginning to wander about these things myself.  <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

hmm i liek that respawn system, and as for 2 marines dying at the -exact- same moment, well i think that's almost impossible to happen. SO it's just the one that dies first will be first on the list. Or can the commander actually choose who he revives, lets say you've got a n00b (nothing bad 'bout them) and a good one, will he be able 2 respawn the good one ebfore the n00b (ps i'm not in favour of this, cuz n00bs gotta learn soemday 2 play the game, so they should play lots of times).

i fink the higher the score the quicker the respawn - if you have a high score that means u obviously give a damn about the game and rnt jus playin to lame around or mess about - jus an idea

Except that the marines won't have individual scores, so there's no way that that would work.

if the coders can make it so armour is only associated with the main body and helmet ( note no heavy armour )  and that it is about half the health of the player ( even in the future you cant carry Tank armour round <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo--> ) then i believe that it can be an unrealistec realism <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> omg i dont have a clue what i am talking about.

Making a line up will discourage new players. We want everyone to be equal. Like in a communism. <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

Hmm didn't Flayra also say that in causal games that every so often each side get free spawns?
  • GreedoGreedo Bounty Hunter Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 37Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Yeah, every thirty seconds, the marines get reinforcements free of charge (I think free).  This is basically to prevent the commander from not buying them.  But he still can, in public mode, if he needs reinforcements right away.
