The box on the right is set up like a grid. Your main four keys for buildings are on the top row.
These are designated by (left to right) q, w, e and R. The next row, is, logically, the next on your keyboard. A, S, D, F. The least used one is the bottom row, Z, X, C, V.
Edit: To make this clearer, main buildings are Q, and always Q. Advanced buildings are W, medpacks/ammo/cats are E, and equipment is R. When you hit any one of these, a submenu comes up below it.. Let's say you wanna drop a medpack.. hit E, then A (Because medpack is in the second row, far left.), and click to drop. Ammo is the near left, so you'd hit S to put it on the cursor.. Same with buildings and the like. All you have to do is look at the lower right, and then your keyboard, and you'll know what to press.. if not, hover over them.. it should give a tooltip as to what button.. usually.
There's only 12 different spots for buttons to be on the lower right of the commander hud.. and using these keys, you can manipulate 99% of the command interface without moving your hands off wasd, or moving your mouse back and forth from that lower right (Possibly scrolling the screen away) and to the playfield.
I can always tell newbie comms and veteran comms by any spam they do. A good comm can dish out about 2 medpacks/second, depending on lag.. or outfit an entire squad of 'rines with HA/HMG/Welder in about 10 seconds tops (Assuming he has the res saved, heh). Others are *drop* ... wait two secs.. *drop* .. etc.
It's kind of like StarCraft's hotkeys.. only I'd say better, to be honest.
nothing like that. selecting a group of people and hitting ctrl # would put them in a hot group, pressing that number afterwards reselects those people.

Actually, it's the +duck modifier coupled with "slot1" through "slot5".
In fact, if you unbind "slot5", you can no longer make squad 5! Even though it's used nowhere else in the game.
And there ARE hotkeys to select all marines.. they're impulses that you can find in the options menu easily enough. That's why I said 99% of the interface using those 12 keys. You still need to manually click logout (Or type stopcommandermode in the console) and the "select all marines" button unless you bind that, as well.

Last I checked, the medpack is set to the S hotkey position and ammo is A.

Happy commanding!
don't like them (you can bind them on the num-pad if you like )
