Hey Everyone,

Rise of Power is a Massively Multiplayer Online Action Game for the Half-Life 2 Engine (God willing VALVe actually releases this thing.) For more information, check out our site, here are some model renders to get you all excited! (Well they should excite you... not in that way, sicko!)

    Site is down so I can't see it, but I'm interested in how you intend to make an MMO in a game with MAYBE a 64 player limit at best? That's not very Massively Multiplayer, its more like Quite Large Multiplayer at best. QLMORPG. :P

    EDIT: We're thinking 100 - 300 People Per Server but we can't set a concrete limit until HL2 is out.

    Well, I certainly wouldn't call it groundbreaking or the first MMOAG, but that doesn't mean it can't be freakin' sweet. Best of luck on that one.

    What other game is defined as a MMOAG? Maybe I'm just not aware of it's existence... anyway it will be ground-breaking for a modification, maybe not so ground-breaking for a game. But, you said it best, it will be friggin' sweet! I guarantee you that!

    If HL2 is anything like every other engine, the player limit is going to be hardcoded into the engine, meaning you'd have to reverse engineer your way through hl2's exe and then distribute your own modified version along with the mod, which would pretty much make your mod illegal. Again, this is just as far as I know, but I'd be willing to bank money on it.

    And in besides, just because you do manage to hax the executable and change the limit from 64 to 128, even 128 isn't massive, nor do I bet the HL2 net code could handle that many players.

    I'm not trying to insult you or your mod or anything, I'm just wanting to make sure you've thought these things through.

    Yes, of course, well we just don't know to be honest. When HL2 is released we'll deal with this issue, until then it's all guess-work.

    We're currently looking for alternatives to the pay-to-play system as I hate PtP as well. However server costs are going to eat us alive if we're not generating funds somehow, trust me, we'll do any and everything to prevent PtP. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    In an side rant: You know what I'd love to see? An RPG similar to the old bbs door games. WHere you had like 30 turns a day or something. Or maybe 30 minutes of playtime.

    That'd be great for something like this. Keep player stats on the server itself and the server can have like 500 different characters on it but only X (where X=hl2's max server limit) could be on at once. If players wanted to play some more they could go onto a different server for their 30 minutes there as well. This would cause people to have a few favorite servers to play on day after day, but would also keep resources available to turn the game into a large game yet keep the small community feeling. Just like LORD. :P

    Maybe you should consider a system like this for your game?

    We're trying to stray-away from these RPG-esque elements as much as possible, things like turns and lvl ups. We want the name of the game to be ACTION and MAYHEM. I like your idea kind of... not bad... the other thing is, we're planning on a good storyline, so everyone will be playing in the same world (map) but getting through the story at their own pace. With such an emphasis on story-telling we wouldn't want to cut the player off after 30 minutes, if they want to keep playing then let them keep playing I say! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
