Think of it as the brother of Final Fantasy 3 (US). They were both released around the same time, both had very involved stories, but had very different styles of play (outside of the 'powerlevel like mad' style that is true for practically all Console RPGs)
The Playstation Crono Trigger supposedly has a bunch of FMVs piled into it to make it worth buying.. FFIV is also included, but only has a new movie at the end of the game where you get to see "cool scenes from the game." It was rather cool, but I had wished for more than that.
Yeah... actually, afaik they're pushing for a law to make emulation of video games illegal whether you own an actual hardcopy of the game... or am I nuts?
Anyway, Chrono Trigger was (to me) one of the best RPGs for the SNES, and that's saying a LOT. It's one of those games that really did leave things open-ended for you to run around and explore at random, and the game features letting you jump back and forth in the game timeline. So let's say you do something in the "past" and then jump into the future... you'll see the direct result of what you did.
And yeah, I don't like Toriyama's designs either, but that aside I still thought it was a fabulous game <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

All the oldschool games like Zelda (no, not the new ones) and Super Mario Brothers will fall into obscurity... even Chrono Trigger would do the same.
Emulation = win for old games + systems: Super Mario Brothers - only possibility IS the computer to play it today but lose for newer games and systems: Emulated Metroid Prime/Halo/Soul Calibur 2? Why bother ... Better on the console then computer.

They needs lots of power to run, and the emulators out today are still pretty buggy.
And btw, emulation is already illegal. There is no 24-hour evaluation rule. There is no "backup because you own the original game" rule. ROMs are 100% illegal.
