    Quick note: you all can debate what was the first game in each genre (or at all, in fact) till you're all blue in the face, but that's not what's important.

    The games that made a difference are the ones we remember. So Dune2/C&C weren't the first RTS games ever... but they're the ones that showed the world what you could do with a real time engine and some guys to order around. Therein lies the reason you'd call them earth shattering games.

    As I've heard many-a-good developers say before: Pretty much everything you can think of has already been done, what remains is to do it better, faster, more efficiently, and with a higher fun facter.

Yes? I don't care, FF still deserves a mention <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ), <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Umm....

    Zelda? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Can't agree with KFS though, the KQ & SQ series (in fact, Sierra adventures full stop) were awful, and never stood up to the glory of the Lucasarts ones.

    Aaanyway, top 10 in no order, most significant games I ever played.

    1) Secret of Mana
    2) Exile
    3) Doom
    4) Dune II
    5) Elite
    6) Street Fighter II
    7) Bubble Bobble
    8) Action Quake II
    9) Zelda : A Link to the Past
    10) Deus Ex

    Those 10 I think have been the ones which changed the way I looked at & played games as I grew up, from a BBC Micro & early arcades through some consoling through to being a dedicated PC user.

    Incidentally, Wolfenstein 3d may have been the first, but it was Doom that made it take off. Wolf3d enjoyed a massive resurgance with the release of Doom, but wasn't that significant in itself.

    The difference here is, DQ was there first, and is STILL kicking arse. And Ill say it again. DQ 1 was a success. It was so successful that it 'inspired' Squaresoft to copy it. Fortunately, Square also made a high quality product. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> (not sure if i can say still say that for the latest ones tho...)

    For having the first good commercial in the history of gaming? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    There's not actually many games that i can think of to be so revolutionary as to change gaming as we know it. I'm not just going to list a bunch of my favourite games, i'm actually going to spend a little time with my choices.

    First up, Doom. This wasn't the first FPS game, this is the one that made FPS games popular. It was leaps and bounds further than Wolfenstein 3D and broke entirely new ground in gameplay.

    Next on was Quake. This wasn't quite as groundbreaking as Doom, but it ushered in the new age of "true" 3D FPS games. It also gave birth to the first large mod scene. Sorry, but Doom and Duke3D modding were too restricted, Quake with the inclusion of Quake C (.qc) opened so many doors for modders.

    And then there's Half-Life. To be honest, this isn't one of my favourite single player games, but it broke new ground with two things. Firstly, it was an FPS with an actual plot which opened before your eyes, never really touched upon in an FPS game. Next, there was the absolutely huge mod scene which is still thriving now, some 5 years after it's initial release.

    Breaking chronological order now, there's Monkey Island. This is considered by many, myself included, to be the finest adventure series ever made. Dispite it's crappy graphics, it had an excellent story and was genuinely funny, this didn't particulaly open the door to too many things, but it is a legend in gaming.

    Baldur's Gate & Planescape: Torment. I'm lumping these two together, they're based on the same engine and are relatively similar in a lot of ways. These two RPGs have shown what it means to add depth and story to games. Both have detailed and compelling stories accompanied by masses of other information and stuff. These games are just immense and have really shown what is possible with the RPG genre.

    And finally, Morrowind. This may not seem quite so revolutionary at first, but with it's immense landscapes, compelling story, fantastic levelling system, gorgeous visuals and a whole load of other stuff, this game was more perfect than most people think. It's hard to play it without being sucked in, and even if you don't get sucked in, you can just go and do your own thing. This is pure open-ended fun, plain and simple. I feel Morrowind was more a coming of age of RPG games, it married the in depth story telling and detail of the likes of Baldur's Gate with cutting edge 3D graphics, and ontop of all that, it's modable to boot! Morrowind, i feel, opened the way for KOTOR, another truely amazing 3D RPG.

    I can see I'm going to be the correction guru in this thread, but <i>Elite</i> was far from the first 3D game. I'm not however questioning its place here, as I must have wasted at least ten years on <i>Elite</i> (BBC) and <i>Frontier</i> (Amiga & PC). <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Outrun changed the face of arcade gaming with its incredible graphics, addictive gameplay and its ability to let the user choose their own routes and music.

    I'll own an Outrun cabinet one day.

    Wolfinstien 3D, Command and Conquer: Red Alert, Delta Force 2, Total Annihilation, Final Fantasy 7 and Half-Life have been the games that truly shaped my gameplaying experiances.

    The games that built on the foundations laid by the previous games are Starcraft, Command and Conquer, Fallout, Fallout 2, Earth 2150, Metal Gear Solid and Shogun: Total War.
