Please Help A Console Nub

<div class="IPBDescription">I need suggestions</div> Recently, one of my friends gave up video games... he said they were interfering with his life, he played them too much, etc. Long story short, I now have a free Playstation 2, and I need to get some games for it.

Unfortunately, I haven't really got a clue as to what to get. I know most (or at least a lot) of you guys have PS2s, so I'd appreciate some input on what games to buy, what games to avoid, etc. I'd be particularly interested in games that went under the industry radar, so to speak, and didn't have much publicity but are still excellent. Those are the ones that are hard to find.

Oh, and no console wars please. I can't afford to buy another console and I won't be getting rid of this one, so no comments directing me to do either of those things.

I liked Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner, but it's only about 8 hours total, so I'd just rent it. I also like Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven, but it's very difficult. Give it a shot if stealthy ninjas snapping necks is your thing.

I'd avoid Devil May Cry 2. I played it for about an hour before I returned it to EB. It's basically this: Run, jump, keep pressing the Shoot button. Then watch a cutscene with bad voice acting and cheesy lines before you go back and do the same thing.

Take advantage of the fact that it's a Playstation 2 and get some games you wouldn't be easily able to play on computer. Buy (or at least rent) some form of Dance Dance Revolution or Kareoke Revolution and get a bunch of friends over who don't care about making fools of themselves. If desired (and legal for your age / in your area), add alcohol.

There are plenty of DDR clones on PC, but no way I'm aware of to play Kareoke revolution except on PS2.

I would have to recommend the Final Fantasy games 7-..X-2 or something (although, there's some of them you can get/could have got for computer).

The Resident Evil series, for the normal playstation, and Code Veronica X for PS2 (rent all of the games I mention before you buy them, because you might not like them - or just look them up on gamespot or ign, or something less stressful).

I find the GTAs are more fun on the consoles, so if you don't have it on computer you might want to try it out on your PS2.

All I can think of is PSone games...bah.

I'll give you a list of my good ones:
    o Soul Calibur 2
o Castlevania: Lament of Innocence (I know, I KNOW!! "THE LEVLZ R BLAND LOLOL!O!!")
    o Dynasty Warriors 4
o Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
    o Zone of the Enders / ZOE2
o Final Fantasy X (if you like RPGs)
o Twisted Metal: Black (if you like blowing things up like me! >D)
o Timesplitters 1 and 2 (REALLY fun to play with friends with maps that you made!)
o Devil May Cry (<u>stay away from DMC2, it's too short, but you can rent it if you want</u>)
o Everquest: Champions of Norrath (it's single player)

    EDIT:
The Playstation 2 can play PSX (or Playstation 1) games, I would recommend:
    o Final Fantasy anything
    o Legend of the Dragoon
    o Chrono Cross (!!)
    I'm too lazy to check through the rest of my PSX games though. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> Sleepzor time. <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I vote trade it in towards a Gamecube or Xbox. ^^

The only games for PS2 that make me wish I had one (I have a Cube and Xbox because I liked their selections better) are DDRMAX and MAX2, and the Final Fantasy series. And with DDR available for Xbox and Crystal Chronicles on the Cube (not to mention Prime, Mariokart, Sunshine, Wind Waker, and Twin Snakes), I'm pretty much happy as a clam. (:

On a similar note: I wish I had bought a Gamecube instead of a PS2 (because I mostly got it for GTA:VC...and that came out on Xbox anyway)...GC has everything the Xbox doesn't.

...and Xbox gets tons of PS2 games and its own. So Xbox + Gamecube would work the best. PS2 does still have the new Final Fantasies and some other decent games.

I enjoy my Xbox/Gamecube console combination. I never really liked the PS2, sure it had the Final Fantasy games, but thats about it on my level of interest for the games.

I'm the other way... GCN/PS2. Anything on the X-bucks I want to play will come out on the PC eventually, but will look better and run faster on modern hardware, rather than a mid-low end PC 'platform'. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

On the count of the PS2, I'd vote to avoid any Final Fantasy after 6... possibly excepting IX. I'd go into reasons as to why for each of the titles, but that'd end up drawing Sephiroth fanboys like flies to... well... an apt negative parallel utilizing reprocessed food substance. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

DDR is fun, and if you play it as intended (rather than kicking back and just using your thumbs on a standard controller) is a decent enough form of exercise and balance training. As noted, you WILL make an idiot of yourself the first few times you play it, so either learn in private, or add alcohol to the mix.

I'd also recommend the Armored Core series if you enjoy giant robot combat, Dark Cloud (and DC2) if you enjoy quirky RPGs with LOADS of replayability, SSX Tricky if you like snowboarding games (or just enjoy showboating like a madman on the 'free run' modes.. Psymon is a great character to work up to max level with), Fatal Frame or the Silent Hill series if you enjoy horror games done right (unlike Resident Evil), Frequency and Amplitude for ear-pleasing twitch gaming...

..and DEFINITELY Magic Pengel. Kinda like Monster Rancher, but you draw your own creatures, and it pops them to 3D monsters with their own stats based upon the amount of color, and the particular colors used in each particular part of the monster. Really fun to go through and earn color (so you can draw more), a larger tablet (larger/more complex monsters) and unlock the different brushes that you can use, to make things just as you want them. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Same here, but if that's not possible:

Marvel vs. Capcom 2, I'd recommend and CUSTOM Arcade Stick for it, but for one of those, you'd need some connections on who makes them.

if you don't mind 2D fighters and have some friends you can play against Guilty Gear XX is a must... honestly, it's better than everything else, even Capcom vs SNK 2 (sacrilege! ~cackles~).

Depending on your tastes Kingdom Hearts might be worth a shot too ^^

GAH! now I'm gonna have to go check out the pengel thingy ~shakes fist at tal and wanders off to read about it~

Beyond Good and Evil - one of the best games no one has ever heard of. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> It's for all major platforms, and seems to be best on the GC, but it might also be worth a shot on the PC if you don't want to get the PS2 version. Price should be low, since it dropped pretty fast, but it's a beautiful, relaxed, light-hearted title that is just simply a joy to play <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for any system.

You also probably can't go wrong with the Naughty Dog/Insomniac partners in crime Jak and Ratchet and Clank titles. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> Haven't played them myself, but have always seen them spoken of very highly.

Once upon a time I bought a GameCube, PS2 and an Xbox. I sold my Xbox due to the fact that it had only a few reasonably good games imo.

Suggestions for PS2 games would be:

*ICO <---Great puzzle game, graphics and story, you should LOVE it.

*Pro Evolution Soccer 3 <----Ace footy game with added extras!

*Final Fantasy X <---Speaks for itself.

*Good Beyond Evil <----As above poster said, hardly anybody has heard of this. I really would say to buy it. Great adventure game AND the rrp is only £19.99! Cheap cheap!

    Have fun.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty. My favourite PS2 game by far. I've seen this "Eyetoy" in shops which looks quite fun too <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The fact no-one has mentioned Tenchu - Stealth Assasin puts this board to shame. Also on the PSOne game front, consider Bloody Roar 2 for a decent beat-em-up.

    PS2 rules for happiness

1 - No FPS. There is no point.

2 - Never get PS2 Hitman 2. Controls are hideous.

I recommend Tekken Tag, its the best on the PS2 and its dirt cheap now.
Ditto MGS2 Substance. Wrath of Heaven is nice but if you're going for the top rankings you will get very frustrated very quickly. Just unlock the extra character and go around stabbing people with needles instead.

Driving games, GT A-spec and the Geneva version both suck. I was VERY disappointed and to be honest I play GT2 more.

Vice City. Best time killer ever.

Most of the Platinum range is good, though not all.

Take heavy advantage of the fact that the PS2 has an unrivalled back catalogue - all those PS1 games too! Thus you can pick up scores of games for very little cash. Lots of PS1 games are still very playable and enjoyable, its just a question of buying clever.

Rez. The game is Rez. The game you need is Rez.

    Remember that name. Rez.

And Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night.

    REZ!

Do you have to appreciate the soundtrack to enjoy Rez? The bosses are impressive, but otherwise, all I saw was an (admittedly pretty) standard shooter. I couldn't get into the music though, so maybe that's why.
  • coilcoil Amateur pirate. Professional monkey. All pance. Join Date: 2002-04-12 Member: 424Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
The music is certainly the point of Rez, because every action within the game - targetting, locking on, firing, hitting enemies, enemies firing back, EVERYTHING - adds its own sound to the mix.

That said, Rez looks better on the Dreamcast than on the PS2. ^^ It's still definitely worth getting, though.

i would sell the ps2 and get mad amounts of new pc games that are coming out this easter and summer.
  • twoflowtwoflow Singing Drunk Join Date: 2002-11-01 Member: 1950Members, Constellation
I liked the way the soundtrack was molded around your actions, but the music itself left me cold. I'd pimp a certain game starring a Man with a Gitar (oo!) at this point, but half my posts do that anyway, so you know.
