i got this funny idea for a grenade

when i was in 3rd grade we used to take ketchup packages and twist them tight and though it at each other for them to explode

that would be a real funny nade if u made it >_<

wow, purafax's skin is absolutely amazing...brings meh first attempt to a dreadful shame...

im REALLY inexperienced with lithunwrap and 3dsmax. so the model got total screwed up asnd turned VERY boxy...any ways. heres mine, its rough and un finished right now but i only spent bout 10- 15 min on it...

sorry jimmeh if mine resembles your at all... i just like the style and this my first real skin so i need some inspiration. im working now on making it my own. any tips on putting this thing on the model with out going thru lithunrap cuz it makes the model really blocky.

i think you need to work on your scratches a bit FATAL, they look a little artificial. try to think of HOW the scratches would get there, then put them on where they would most likely appear (eg, if the nades were kept in a metal rack, the bottoms would be scratched around the edges, and maybe around the catch, where they've been banging against a holster or belt) i've found adding scratches to a skin is one of the few things i can do well. i certainly can't skin for crap, but i know the basics <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

yeah i need to work on theory behind scratches. they look ok IMO on the main body but the bottom and other little parts i didnt really care for cuz well, your never gonna see em.

before i hijack this thread... lets get this on a skeleton! shouldnt be too hard cuz the animations are pretty basic. i would but im a n00b with lithunwrap and my model turns out to be a big pentagon...

again on the scratches thing, i notice that there's only a whitish colour to denote where the scratches are. Well scratches are like little wells, and would collect light on one side while exclude light on the opposite side. Best way to show this is make a layer for the black of the scratch (shadow) and then duplicate that and invert it (ctr-i). Then move the white layer a pixel or two up/down and left/right and then tweek the transparency till you like. Oh and to get the actual lines, i like to use a one pixel paintbrush, so they are real thin scratches. Then just play with transparencies of both layers for the right depth. (just how i do it.)

thx for the tips man, i just figured out why the sratches look so fubared than the original i did... its my mouse. see how the scratches on the new one are more like little dots? my new mouse is really bout that... i will try the shadows tho. the way i do scratches is dodge, 1 pixel, 100% exp. so it doesnt matter what color the thing is itll still look right, plus it usually comes up with a good opacity. i might just redo the scratches using my old mouse. are there any other models out there that are meshed that need skinned that i may be able to practice on? looking at the same mesh forever gets kinda old...

i used the dodge technique. works well in conjunction with the lined scratches, try it. also try (a little) of the smudging, like the paint or something got smeared.

    How I make scratches:

    1. New layer
    2. 1px white pencil tool
    3. Make smooth scratch marks
    4. Set to overlay or soft light and 50% opacity if you want them to be more subtle
    5. Use the erase tool at a small size with about 25-50% opacity to fade out the ends
