The return of ns_shaft.

I stopped working on this map for a long time, mostly because I hated the old ns_shaft and it’s generic un-mineish style. So I’ve restarted it again but this time I’m aiming for a more gritty industrial theme. I also drew a layout before starting this time <!--emo&:0--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':0'><!--endemo--> Anyways here’s a few shots of what I’ve done so far. R_speeds go up in the 700s a tiny bit but it’s nothing bad.

    Very nice! One of the best bit in this map IMO is the fact is that it looks realistic and like it could be a real place!

    I can't fault it, (but then again I am not a mapper!) I am looking foward to seeing the full map in action!

    just bloody amazing, lighting, and the arcitecture is SPLENDID! I abosultely love that elevator shaft! Seriosuly no complaints here!

    Ok, well, maybe some varied lighting a little, maybe a red hue going down the elevator shaft?

    Wow, I think those shots look really good!

    I especially like the vertical space in shots #3 and #5.

    The benches and table in shot #4 remind me of an airport lobby (it's a good thing, I like your benches and table). You said that you were going for a gritty industrial feel, but it seems to me like you've made it a little... cleaner. I like it the way it is. I also like that it's supposed to be a mineshaft area, I think that's what you said. Where can we get the story and layout for this map?

    I like the lighting and architecture. Keep up the good work, and sorry for the lack of constructive criticism.

    Amazing. I love the texture choices and architecture (corridor shape and stuff) and the lighting. The elevator shaft and adjoining hallways, and the hallway with computer banks in the last pic, are own

    I really like this, but I would like to see more use of NS textures.  It looks fantastic, but I'm not sure how much it feels like NS.

    I counted maybe 2 non-NS textures...

    I love the feeling of the screenshots, it's really great <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

    I like the architecture alot.  The soft yellow lighting also makes this really good!

    I'm disagreeing with whoever said to add red in the elevator shaft.  Keep red lighting out of the map, or at least not in places that are nice and yellow.

    Also, is it just me, or does the first picture look cel-shaded?

    maybe you're even better then Badmofo, congrats dude!

    Also if he's the leader...i don't agree with Flayra,maybe textures are different, and the areas we see here are clean...but they look like an outpost or a spacecraft, so don't understand why this isn't NS  <!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->

    Then...all is looking impressive, just the lighitning is a bit too much of the same colour,but i think that the shots are showing adjacent rooms.

    Pleeeease Ekaj, finish this map! every time u restart it looks more better(well,i was loving last version,with the blue lights in the Commander Room)but we want to play it...u can always make a sequel to fix the things u don't like  <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

    He lives!!   <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    I guess what Flayra is saying is that there is not enough dark and spooky places in these shots.  I'm assuming that these are near the marines spawn...  Maybe some pics from some of the hive areas?

    Well, the shots look spectacular architecturally, but I just don't get a good feeling from them overall.  The lighting's just too warm and gentle, in my opinion.  It makes the place feel 'wrong' for NS.  It could just be the color, but the old Shaft seemed really great at the harsh, awesome lighting.

    And Flayra has a very valid point.  If I wasn't looking closely, I could easily see this as a map for another mod.   <!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->

    I think you have got a very clinical style going on there, which looks pretty cool.  Everything is well rounded off, and smooth, which works well.

    I like the lighting style and I think the colours come of well.  I think you should have more dark corners, and gloom further on into the map as this area is rather wll lit.

    Pretty kewl <img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/Skin/SKIN-2/PostIcons/icon14.gif" border="0"> <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

    Honestly, that is one of my favorite places ever. I just love it; it looks so real, like it could really be a place. As mentioned by Greedo, you might want to be careful and make sure it fits the atmoshphere, but I really think that it is okay to have clean, gentle rooms like this. Survival Horror games have clean gentle rooms, and those are scary as heck as long as that isn't all they have.

    Inviting areas make the uninviting ones seem even more so by contrast.

    Great job, looks wonderful.

    LPC; I would disagree with you.
    In some cases you can say Mr X is better than Mr Y, but in this case, and others, lots of mappers have different styles, and they cant be compared.
    Kinda like comparing apples and oranges, you only get opinions, rather than facts.

    But as for feedback on Shaft, I dont know about this version, it seems a bit strange.  I am still not seeing anything 'shaft-y' about it, it is just looking like some lobby rooms with a hallway or two.  And I know you are probably going to add the more mine-like areas later on, but just kind of hinting to get an even stronger mine feel.
    I still think you should incorportate some dark areas to the map, to fit the NS theme more, like Flay said.

    These screens are of the marine spawn and the cafeteria, with an elevator shaft in-between. I haven’t mapped the mining and refinery areas yet, and I don’t see why this doesn’t fit the NS theme. Go look at ns_eclipse, it has soft lighting as well but it still seems to “fit”, and in every area of this map so far there are near pitch black patches of shadow. Besides 2 or 3 textures, this map uses only official and modified ones. ns_shaft will get more industrial near some of the hives but I’ll still be mostly using this clean texture set. Thanks for the replies.

    I really like the mood of the map =) its pretty tight packed and you just gotta love those legendary pipes you always make =).
    Anyways, i have to disagree with flayra, this map its pretty unique, it doesn´t use almost any non ns textures, i think you should really stick to this map because you have all the skillz you need to make an official map.
    The only thing i can complain about this shots is that they look too sexeh hehe j/k, the only 2 things that bug me are:
    1)Theres not enough contrast =/ white and yellow are pretty much the same color, you should add some red or blue or somthing different =).
    2)It SEEMS a little hard for skulks to walk-climb around, and for lerks to fly =/ it feels really...... Claustrophobic =)
    Edit: I forgot somthing <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo--> can i have a copy of the old ns_shaft bsp? i wanna take a look at it on the nstr =)

    i would love to see some of the harsh blue and orange contrast of the old shaft creeping into this map =D what you have so far is excellent.

    looks really good, but i dun think it really fits into the ns theme. and u said its industrial map, looks more like an urban or a civilian station. too... clean... too... perfect... too... nice... wtvr, keep up the good work!

    Edit #1:
    oh yea, 1 more thing, i think there;s too much light for an alien infested place

    I knew you'd come back sooner or later, Ekaj! This are would be perfect for a place near marine spawn, but as stated its really warm, and doesnt really look like NS atmosphere. I think as long as most of the map doesnt look like this its excellent
  • SamRSamR Join Date: 2002-09-30 Member: 1382Members
    This is superb. A lot of the time, I see map screenshots and I think they are a bit mediocre, but this is incredible. Everything is so solid and like Venmoch said, it actually looks like it could be a real place.

    I think that it's ridiculous that all the maps should look the same with the "NS feel" to it. I personally think that a lot of the textures in the ns.wad aren't THAT special, but you have really chosen them well, and they really fit.

    Well done man, I really admire this level work so far.

    These shots do look awesome, but i have to agree with greedo.  The lighting is very nice on the eyes, very warm, like he said.  If you can somehow put an edge on your lighting...  Another thing i noticed which adds to the warm feeling is the way the place feels so homely, not as if aliens have taken over.  Break something, (i dont know).  It looks great otherwise.
