<div class="IPBDescription">People are such idiots.</div>link gotten from today's <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com" target="_blank">Penny Arcade</a> news.

<a href="http://www.msnbc.com/m/mw/mw.asp?t=V&id=tdy_bloom_sniper_021010&sk=&pl=seeking_a_killer_&name=&opt=0" target="_blank">click here to watch horrible excuse for "journalism"</a> (skip to about 1:50 into the video to go for new part)

Apparently the thinktanks at MSNBC have already concluded that, despite knowing nothing about the sniper, its the fault of video games, specifically Counter-Strike. Because of the tarot card obviously. You know, because its paper. And computers. And.. oh.

Yeah. Almost makes me wish there was no freedom of speech so I didn't have to hear stupid things like this.

i'm willing to bet 10 million $ that the sniper is a member of some sniper club. and not some gamer
and if it was a gamer it WOULDN'T be a online gamer becouse there is no godmode in 100% of the online games.

I think someone posted this before.

Anyone find it oh so sad and ironic that they have a commercial for a place that sales Counter-Strike and other violent games right before they claim that is where the sniper got his idea?

Whether or not video games correlate with violent crime at *all*, there's a big difference between a pair of kids with an arsenal and a guy with a sniper rifle.  Why?  Because any jack### can wound a few people in a crowd of 50 by spraying them with automatic weapon fire.

You can't effing learn to be lethal at 100+ yards with a sniper rifle from playing COUNTER-STRIKE.  Aiming "skills" learned in CS and other games simply DO NOT APPLY to the real world.  People need to figure that out.  This guy is a hunter or military trained.  He's not an effing gamer.

To save myself the trouble, I'll just reuse my comments from the last post on this subject:

What's that you say?  U.S. national news medias using non-sequiturs to create hyperbole and rhetoric?

bah.  I'll believe it when I see it.

I find the "godmode" quote humorous.

Apparently they are getting doom cheats confused with client side hacking, which is so shunned in our communities it's unbelievable.  That sad thing is, people are so ignorant to our games that they actually believe this line of BS the media's been spewing out.

This really should stop.  This guy isn't a sniper.  Sniper's don't leave shell casing's lying about, regardless if he ment to or not.  Snipers can do what he does from a mile, not a few hundred yards.

They're giving this guy way too much credit.

GTA 3... is a little questionable...

Welcome to the new face of the media ...

Instead of reporting the news like they should, they set out to create it for the ratings.

"Videos games made the sniper flip out?!  Omg, which chanel did you see it on?" and so forth.

Its all circumstantial evidence.  They have no proof of anything they say and the only good to honest connection they can make between CS and the sniper is obviously the weapon.  Well ... hello?  Rouge Spear, Max Payne, Battle Field, AMERICAS ARMY - countless other examples all feature sniper rifles and even more actually have a good to honest god mode.

They just picked the most famous game that all the kids play and jumped to a conclusion.  They dont know the age of this person.  Anyone think a 15 year old kid could possibly do all of this without being noticed?  Has access to a rifle such as this?  Is around people who wouldnt turn him in?

... and the reason that kids are homosexual, apparently.

Bottom line, people always try to sluff off, trying to pass the blame to someone else.  It happened with the parents of the Columbine boys, it's happening here...

The Media got the leak, printed it, and NEVER, EVER, said aything about how it could have been their fault that the killer's message had still been run...

Excuse my vulgar language, I feel that if there will ever be a time for it to be acceptable, now is it. Feel free to edit out anything that the filter doesnt catch

I think it has become obvious to pretty much everyone that everyone is a #### tard, a complete idiot and senseless moron, and some of the time even you yourself are one, although you may not know it. To alot of other people, no matter what, you are a complete #### tard. In many cases its acceptable, human nature, but in some cases it just goes straight ####### overboard. People who believe half of what the media says are #### tards, perticularily when the media talks about anything related to youth pasttime. The cheesedicks at the media don't care about honesty, they care about what we call capitalism, making ####### money, ####### ratings. They'll lie all they can to make as much money as possible, no matter how much they put people, or groups of people down. Here, in these forums, we all know that videogames dont do #### to make people more violent than they already are. There are always idiots that will believe everything the media says, just because they are the media. You have to understand that the media arn't special in any way, its just some building with a bunch of people that give out "news". They arn't somehow specially dedicated to bringing everyone the absolute truth, or to making sure that the public remains safe. Hell, they don't care who's shot and who isnt, if someone is shot they use it to make money. Lying is a normal part of a newsbroadcasters job. This article on MSNBC is a good example of typical media. I can point out that after some research, you would find out that the people that made the connection between the sniper and counter-strike are the same people that made the connection between 9/11 and MS Flight Simulator. I see that Tycho and Gabe from <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com" target="_blank">Penny-Arcade</a> made a pool on which major media company would be the first to connect the sniper with videogames, purely out of humour, because these guys are smart. I always find it fun to read Tycho or Gabes rants on the news every few days. They're oppinions are always mature, and sensible. I got a really good laugh out of the <a href="http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2002-10-14&res=l" target="_blank">Most Recent Comic</a>. It goes to show how absolutely rediculous all of it is. <b>(Note to self: must stop rant sooner or later).</b> Now about the sniper. There have been many speculations on who this (or these) guys may be. On Penny-Arcade I notice Tycho mentioned how he heard 3 people talk about how the sniper was probably some 15 year old gamer. It's hard to imagine the sheer stupidity of these #### heads. <b>(Note to Self: Stop ####### swearing)</b> I've seen a couple speculations in this topic too, most of them pretty sensible. Some of you may know that about 20 minutes away from washington is the biggest sniper-training facility in North America. I would put my bets on someone in their 20s, 22-26, and has done some training at this facility. I would think he/they had not yet completed this school, or only did a few months there. I can tell because of the mistakes he/they seems to be making (IE leaving shells lying around, so the police can tell where he's been standing). Saying that this person is 15 is more than stupid, its ####### retarted. This person obviously has had SOME training, be it just some or plenty, and likely has access to some very good equipment, such as silenced sniper rifles. Seriously people, use common sense.
    I think I am spent
  • GwahirGwahir Join Date: 2002-04-24 Member: 513Members, Constellation
I would challenge these people to run a simple test.

Find several random people who are willing to participate in an experiment.  Take them all down to a firing range for a day and record each person's accuracy.  Have them then play counter-strike or some other game for a few days, and run the accuracy test again.  Then repeat a few more times.  The results will easily tell whether or not playing video-games will significantly increase one's real weapons accuracy.

As for the psychological effects-also have them periodically interviewed by a psychiatrist.
  • TzarconTzarcon Join Date: 2002-02-28 Member: 259Members
that would be interesting to test. But, you would have to make them play CS first, then make them shoot, play CS again, then shoot again. You would also have to compare them against people who had not played CS. This is because they're obviously going to be better their second time around, because they will be more accustomed to the weapon. See if the group that played CS is significantly better than the group that didnt play CS

This is also amusing because, in Counter-Strike, there is not such thing as "God Mode" (to my knowledge). That's an Admin Mod feature (or the built-in Half-Life debugging cheat, either way, it's the same thing). This is yet another example of distorted and inaccurate information, and how it's used to incorrectly determine the source of the problem and name a scapegoat.

    <rant>
This is the kind of thing that really upsets me, but the sad fact is, unless pro-game activists voice their opinions and can prove the contrary, the media and politicians are going to blame video and computer games for these problems. Ever since the Columbine shooting video and computer games have received the brunt of the attack as the source of violent outbursts.

The mentality of "innocent until proven guilty" must not apply to this scenario. Video games will be held responsible for the negative actions of others (even those who don't play them) until it can be proven otherwise. I like this country, I just wish it didn't have so many ignorant people, but I suppose you'll get that anywhere you go... Except maybe Antarctica.

Here's an interesting thought.  Do violent video games make children violent, or are already violent children just more attracted to violent video games?
