Tips for videogame movie writer/directors: In my opinion the best way to do a video game move now would be to not take it so seriously. I mean, the statistical likelyhood of any video game move not sucking (based on past data) is about 0%, so chances are your movie is going to suck, so why not just make the most of it? Fill it with in-jokes only gamers would get, don't sweat the dialog (lets face it, shakespere you aint), don't try to be profound or make some philisophical point, don't screw with elements the fans like (FF didn't have chocobos, moogles, fantasy, ect), and whatever you do don't let them market your movie as the best thing since tetris. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
When I saw FF and I didn't see any big swords, or chocobos, I was like "Wait a sec... this ain't FF!!" The only film based on a game which had <i>some</i> reference to the game which fans could connect would be Resident Evil, with the zombies (which if there weren't any, it wouldn't be RE) and the dogs. But it was spoiled with the last dog being killed with one lousy kick.

Now, for MGS to work, there should be things which fans, or people who at least know a bit about the game, could identify, and not in a silly way. Like, Snake hidding in a cardboard box, or him breaking a soldier's neck. Not too much shooting, but definatly some. And of course... METAL GEAR!!

Dude... imagine seeing Metal Gear on the big screen. The huge robot, destroying everything and trying to get Snake, as he fires a Stinger missile... <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
What also spoiled RE was how the zombies were nothing like the RE ones. Does that make sense? No? Neither did the film.

a movie based on mgs:2 (SoL/sub) following snake would have just enough game references and unexpectedness to make everyone happy. so long as they show us the tanker (maybe even remake the bridge scene? *drool*) and make vamp less of a water-walking-unkillable-crazy-shot-in-the-head-refuses-to-die-can-fly-a-harrier-drank-his-parents-blood-and-is-called-

That's what ya get for Codecing Snake too much! If you'd have just played ignorant, accomplished your objectives in a timely manner, and stuck to the obvious storyline, you could be happily believing vamp was called vamp cuz he liked to drink blood. But, NOOO!

I'm confused. What exactly <i>was</i> Vamp anyways (I've played and beaten the game (Stealth Camo rules!) so there's no need to shout "OMG Play teh game j00 n00beh!")? Was he undead, was he a genetic experiment? What?

From what I gather, he's just a vampire. Considering that Fortune is a telekenetic, Vulcan Raven is a shaman that can summon the spirits of birds, Psycho Mantis is a crazy freaky psychic, Grey Fox is an undead cyborg ninja, and Coward Duck is a coward, I think it all fits in.

And as far as the movie goes, screw MGS2. I want MGS1. Much much better story, much better character development, better setting, better action.. Better everything :D

O.k, i'm putting my arguement hat on.

    1. Vamp doesn't require the blood in any way; that would make him a vampire. He just likes blood because he's a freak.

    2. Telekinetics are a widely believed phenomina, wheras vampires are a widely known myth.

    3. O.k, maybe Raven did have some slightly odd, inexplicable powers, but then, he didn't run on water or take a bullet to the head and survive.

    3. Cyborgs exist. Vampires don't.

    4. How is it even possible to parry bullets with a knife like that? Even assuming he blocked every bullet, the knife would be useless after it took a few hits. Fox's sword on the other hand was all glowy and cool, so could feasibly block bullets with a little stretch of the imagination.

Well, if you think one group of supernatural phenomenon is real while another isn't, well I guess I can't really say anything to convince you his character is a vampire..

Other than perhaps "Its just a video game" but I think we're well past that stage.. :P

Its full possible to block bullets with a Katana, I know that much.

I mean, they back 1000-10000 LAYERS OF METAL into each Katana. Now, think about that. Now, buy a REAL katana. NOW SHOOT IT REPEATEDLY IN THE SAME PLACE. It won't break(believe me, I've seen it done. A guy shot a Katana 34 times in the same spot, and all that happened was that there was a nasty black mark at the spot.
  • RobRob Unknown Enemy Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 25Members, NS1 Playtester
I depends what you shoot it with. I'm fairly sure a katana couldn't take a round from a .50 bmg <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->. And even if a it could, blocking it (essenitially holding the blade with both hands in front of you) would not only be improbable, but if accomplished would knock you flat on your ninja arse and leave you wide open for the next round.

Vamp was... unique. All I could pick up on from the game was that as a boy he was trapped in a collapsed building with his rents, who were dead, so he drank their blood to survive. BUT he's called vamp cuz he's bisexual, but we won't go into that anymore on this board, least I get clubbed in the head by Nem. His superhuman powers were never explained to my knowledge, but that's not suprising: Foxhound was never explained either, merely called freaks :-P.

When it comes down to it, you can't call the MGS series anything close to realistic, since all this, and the fact that Ocelot 1: stole Liquid's Arm and 2: The Arm can control him. Now, we've all heard of people getting donor livers from alcoholics and picking up the devil's brew, but this is stretching it! This case, of course, is on top of many other layers of unrealism that give the game flavor and which I wouldn't trade for anything else (not EVEN an mp5!)

Once again other people explain exactly what I'm thinking a lot better than I can. Thanks rob. :)

And expanding a bit on Vamp's origin, it was a church that exploded when he was a kid and he was also impaled by a crusafix. He drank his dead parents blood to stay alive for 2 days till rescued.

Now onto the other great MGS2 mystery/gaping plot hole:

WTH is up with Peter Stillman?

In a cutscene Fatman claims Stillman "died" 6 months ago (when Dead Cell went nuts). In another, Ocelot claims he had to arrange for a standin to play the part of Peter Stillman to get Fatman to agree to go ahead w/ the plan. And when Raiden is in the water and finds Stillman's body he radios Snake and says Stillman was "waiting" for him (WTH?). And on top of all that, the dog tags you get from Fatman say Peter Stillman in the name.

All this implies that Fatman actually *IS* the original Peter Stillman. At least that's the only way I can make sense of it. I think this one is more due to loose/bad translation than anything, as its just wierd...

Has there ever been a good film based on a videogame?

    Final Fantasy
    Mortal Combat
    Resident Evil
    *shudders* Mario Brothers! <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'd like to point out Final Fantasy was not and was not supposed to, based on any FF game. None of the games (except the newer ones) are actual sequels to eachother.

It had a Gaia..a Cid and an attempt at an in-depth storyline - that's the most you'll relate it to the games.

Mortal Combat isn't a movie or a game to my knowledge, and I'm apparently the only person who didn't like Mortal Kombat, so the movies and the games both sucked <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

Resident Evil shouldn't be considered based off of any of the games either. The only relation it has with the games is the T-virus, zombies, a mansion (that you don't even really see) and zombie dogs (and a licker, but pffft, that). It's just terrible to consider it based off the game.

It's an okay movie on its own, but based off of the RE franchise it sucks.

Mario Brothers was mediocre as a comedy, and crappy as a video-game movie.

MGS could be could if they could get around the big plot twists in the first game. If they just used 1's story it wouldn't work well because everyone would know what's going on...conversely in 2...nobody wants to know what's going on <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

I thought Fat Man was a pretty cool villain, other than the roller skate thing, that was retarded. And I figured Fat Man just snagged Stillman's tags.

When I first got MGS, I played it over and over again until I practically remembered every single line of dialog. I did the same for MGS 2. I guarantee I'll do the same for MGS 3. Once I get my hands on Twin Snakes, and the movie(if it actually happens) I will constantly go through them until I can systematically point out every difference between the three.

I thought the original Mortal Kombat was pretty good on it's own. And while the Tomb Raider story sucked, some of the action scenes were pretty cool.

Here's to having a decent movie.

P.S. WTH!? VAMP'S BI-SEXUAL? WHAT IN THE... HOW DID...

You know what? I don't even wanna know...
