Something keeps starting randomly
As the title states, there's some process that decides to start at random times when I'm on my computer, and it closes half a second or less later. This wouldn't be much of a problem if it didn't bring focus to itself, making anything else loose focus (minimizes fullscreen OpenGL and Direct3D apps (a.k.a. games), and it also makes it annoying when using Flash-based applications with my keyboard [a.k.a. web games]). Though random, it can wait until the perfect time to screw with my mind, like when a Fade blinks up to me, one of the asassin ladies from Return to Castle Wolfenstein pops out of the wall, or I start getting really fast and see some spikes in The Ultimate Flash Sonic. I've scanned for viruses (Norton) and spyware/adware (Ad-Aware) several times, but to no avail. It keeps popping up. Can some one help me? I'm on WinXP Media Center.

On a possibly related note, Norton Anti-Virus flips out when I browse into the Windows folder, apparentley a program called av.exe is a virus that it doesn't know how to handle, or even quarantine :\

well, eep... maybe get avg free edition, or use trend micro house call, to make sure/fix it...

and if the virus is an unrelated thing and whatever is popping up is something else, check your windows task scheduler (if that still exists? did it disappear with windows 98?), or your startup menu and stuff... or check the properties of whatever other programs you have running in the background...

Format - the enema for your computer.

No, seriously. Just back everything up and start again. Better luck next time, try not to get infected.

Like a Movie File just plays on it's own? That happened when I first got my computer. I updated windows and it stopped, you could just format.

people always jump right to saying format =x I think there's very few viruses or similar problems that cause you need to need to resort to that... just try multiple virus scanners til you get the bug out, and if that wasn't the problem, then examine all the programs you have running in the background and stuff, see which could be making it happen...

Get the process name in task manager then google it, and it will answer all your questions.

You must have more than one virus, the av.exe virus is an AIM virus, harmless but annoying, more on it here: http://www.techglitch.com/showthread.php?t=72

The pop-up thing must be adware, try Spybot: Search & Destroy Best of Luck!

Thanks a lot, I'll try as much as I can until I either
    A) Get it out, ideally
    B) Get frustrated and play some ultra-minimize NS

Actually, I remember av.exe. I found out it did nothing important, removed it from my bootlog, and never heard from it again. When I searched my registry for av.exe, I just got a, b, c, d, e, and f as name for registry keys, and it was a list of apps to open a .midi file with...

I think it has something to do with svchost. That process (Which I know it is system-essential, Service Host) has more than one instance open a lot, and sometimes closing them has no effect on my computer whatsoever :\

And I can kind of catch a glimpse at the icon that pops up in the taskbar, it's like a little movie-film icon...

[EDIT]4 svchot.exes running right now, two are being runned by System, the other two from local and network services. [/EDIT]

[EDIT: A PREQUEL] What in the... Well, I guess I removed av.exe completely. Last time I remember trying to delete it, it said I couldn't because I didn't have adequate access, even though I've got administrative privlages :\ That happens a lot with porn icons that randomly start showing up, which has stopped happening since I installed Norton Anti-Virus and Firewall...
