The Problem With Maps

<div class="IPBDescription">Official and Custom</div> This isn't so much a complaint, as an observation, so try not to take offense.

Anyway, the thing with almost all the maps is that they don't look lived-in.

They don't look like people have actually worked and lived there. There are no little personal touches by the crew; no pictures, coffee cups, papers, files, personal-looking computers, et cetera.

Also, there aren't living spaces in most of the maps, and there aren't bathrooms of any sort anywhere. I have trouble believing that anyone who is light-years from another station will just "hold it" until they get there.

    good point <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo--> my map is going to have some of the stuff you mentioned, flashlight in broken area is just one of many more items left by the crew.

    however some maps have only one area playable and give the idea that its a small part of a bigger base/station/ship so some of the things you mentioned could be in those parts <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Well, many maps have doors that can not be opened. So it is always possible for a ship to have the living areas, bathrooms, etc behind those. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Whats 10 years anyway, i could so hold it in... lol. And your 2cents, bring it to Australia (unless your here....) because it would be worth a #$%&load, lol. Yeh, in my maps i have some of these, and lots of "blocked" off areas to the boring parts of the station/bases...

    So now what we need is someone to put in a bathroom that is inacessible to everyone except the comm.... who would probably spend most of their time playing disco with the lights and flushing the john.

    I can see it too.

    Marine:"Uhh, comm, what's your strategy"
    Comm: _flush_

    In all seriousness though that is a good point. Detail textures might help a little here in that things can be kinda scratched up and lived-in-looking. Also decals may be possible for things like pieces of paper and such since they _should_ be possible to just write the location down and not use an entity for it.

    It's funny that this gets mentioned...cause in my original map ns_odlers, a lot of my map was focused on that very thing.. Most of the screenshots posted were in fact of bunkrooms, bathrooms and a cafeteria...

    Even my new map has a whole section called the "domestic sector"

    Toilets are not atmospheric <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    But is so relaxing .. just as your base gets ripped apart by oni and fades you sit alone in your bathroom with the door locked. They can do NOTHING!.

    And then u relocate there.

    Mendasp...I think quite the opposite.. Environments that are familiar to us often give the most atmosphere....for example...in odlers I used the drain in the shower/bathroom to lead to one of the hives.. the bathroom was poorly lit with single lights above each cubicle (which you couldn't get into), a sink and a shower that was busted which sprayed water everywhere... the simple water flowing into the drain and dripping into the sewerage pipes was an awesome effect...it was like aliens had come into my own home.. This was all done with fairly futuristic fittings and so forth (like hydrolic fold-down beds in the dormatory)...

    I think being real in maps is somewhat more important than being flashy and having pretty lights...something might look nice but in terms of memory and location recognition - what is easier to remember "guys, get to the guys dorm bathroom - aliens coming through!!!!" OR "guys, get to the room with the big valve and light blue lights and a particle system blowing smoke - the aliens are...dammit, dead again"

    Well, I'm not saying that it shouldn't ever be used, just that I don't find toilets awesome atmosphere, it's more like... a funny touch to me. That's my opinion. I'm not going to use them, that doesn't prevent anyone from doing it...

    Aliens the film had crew compartments and living quarters obviously because the team sent there had to survive somehow (for a while <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> )? I think seeing signs of human habitation is very important in a map and doesn't damage the atmosphere at all, infact it adds to it. The ns map i'm planning will definitely have a few rooms dedicated as a crew habitat ie sleeping quarters etc.

    I've done a couple maps with rooms like this, but ultimately they end up being pretty functionally useless. Most bedrooms and bathrooms only have one way in and out, which ultimately makes them very fancy dead-ends.

    The one co_ map has a cat in it <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Êach map has a closed door with all the living stuff behind it.

    Okay, that I can accept (the living areas being in sealed off parts of the map).

    However, I still don't get the feeling that people did things there. I don't see any evidance of people working, no half-repaired broken consoles, no tools, no personal equipment, or personal touches. And, a lot of the time, when I crawl down a hallway, I can't feel that at one point, normal people walked down these halls. Talking, laughing, leaning on walls, cleaning up dropped papers, apologizing for spilling coffee on their coworker, there is nothing to make it feel that way.

    What I'm trying to say is, when I play a marine (which is actually pretty rare), I can't make a personal connection with the map. To me, it seems like nothing but a cold, unemotional backdrop.
