As for animals being self-aware, I'm pretty sure they are. Then again I did once live a life as one, but then again, that isn't considered "evidence" is it.
To add to the list: I hate humans who proclaim that everythign about is is chemicals/electrical impulses, and there is nothing else, or those who proclaim that humans are the only creatures with a soul. So your respect is only regarding the best possible way to kill while still not making the creature extinct which isnt a concern nowadays since we can chemichaelly create our own food.
So, a soul has to consist of some form of psychical matter, or it cant exist. Wouldn't that just effectively make it another form of brain? What's wrong about everything being about chemicals/electrical impulses?

I mean, they can't even create a realistic blood filtration system, when a two pound hunk of meat does it just fine.

All animals die the same way, struggling desperately for life. There is fear, often absolute terror and there is pain, plenty of pain - especially when you are getting torn apart by predators. Two years in a vet surgery has yet to show me otherwise.
Given that NO animal wants to die/is happy dieing for another animals food, I fail to see how you killing it to eat and you killing it for sport make any difference to the animal.
You're going to have to do waaayyyy better on the proofs for self awareness. If you dont have an arguement, or you feel your arguement is purely theological, then just say so.
Those who proclaim humans to be the only creatures with a soul normally try and back themselves up/provide evidence and philosophical thought trains to show how they arrived at that conclusion. Would you care to do the same?
