Life is going to probably be pretty hard on you, Levi's family, any pretty much everyone at your school for awhile, and while nothing I can say right now will change that, remember that eventually it will be over.

It's funny how these stories I read on websites seem so distant until one amoung us is caught in the crossfire of one. Take care! And know that all of us are with you and all those around you!

MUM has a reputation for some fairly flakey people. Often, things aren't dealt with as seriously as they should be. In this case, that turned out to be a tragic mistake. Maybe this will serve as a wake up call of sorts.

Here I go, attempting to summarize the events leading up to and including the murder of Levi Butler, on Monday March 1st.

I was in class Monday, March 1st, Education For Enlightenment, we had just meditated, and were watching a Maharishi Tape. In other words, I was asleep. I awoke to "****!" and turned around to see that Schuvender (Schube) had John Killian in a headlock, and appeared to be punching him in the face. Later it became clear that Schuvender was actually attempting to stab Killian in the face with a pen, in fact, it was Killian’s own pen. Killian managed to interject his hand quickly enough to deflect the weapon, and as a result, was hit in the cheek, in a would that would require 7 stitches. Akbar quickly pulled them apart, and Killian was bleeding from the face. Professor Boothby and Professor Jones escorted the two out. Eventually Killian came back, to get his stuff. According to everyone around, including Killian, there was no provocation for the attack whatsoever.
We were quick to dismiss Schube’s action as some kind of massive stress release, as such an action seemed totally out of character for him, especially considering that on the previous Friday, he was the voice of reason coming between William Kern and Gregory Dawson, after an extremely minor incident almost sparked a more than minor bout of violence. Also, most of us didn’t realize there was a weapon involved, as it looked like a massive emotional outburst leading to emotional unstressing via punching John in the face.
Supposedly fist fights have broken out in the Dome before, due to massive stress release, and we quite simply refused to admit to ourselves that it could have been something worse, like attempted murder.
After the Killian Incident, rumors started arising that Schube was at least mildly Schizophrenic, and that he had been abused by his father, and that he had been in and out of mental institutions in the past. This is unconfirmed.
Supposedly, Schube spent the rest of the evening being “Baby-Sat” by Joel Wysong, the Dean of Men, at his home. This is probably the location where Schube acquired the knife.

Levi and I chilled out after class. Will Kern, Aurel Christ, Andy Needham, Levi, and I gathered in Kern’s room, and discussed what had happened in class that afternoon. (Will Kern and I were both in that class) We discussed, of all things, just what we would have done if we were in John Killian’s position. After that, Levi and I watched Naruto, a Japanese Anime about Ninjas. We went to program. I got out of program earlier than he did, as he was snoozing. I went to Ana Purna, got my food, sat around with Kern, Andy, Aurel, Vikram, and Schube. and a bunch of other guys. Levi came in later, and sat at the table behind me.

We were talking, laughing, generally having a good time. I mentioned to Schube that fistfights had broken out in dome before, that one person had even been knocked unconscious in a fight over a simple square of foam. At this, Schube completely zoned out. He then left the table, and we heard swearing behind us. I don’t remember the exact words. It was something along the lines of "What the **** did you just say to me?" "What the hell is going on?" I saw Levi stand up, his shirt looked like something had been spilled on it. Schube seemed to punch him, And then I saw Schube pull away from Levi, pull his hand back, and Akbar grabbed Schube’s wrist from behind, and wrenched it behind his back Somewhere in here, the knife was dropped. Levi was clutching his chest, and looked shocked. There was chatter, screams, and generally "He stabbed him!" Joel Wysong apprehended Schube. Akbar picked up the knife off the ground, and put it on the table. There was blood on the table too. Levi turned purple, then collapsed into someone’s arms. Lyric called 911. There was general commotion and panic, then I ran out to Highway 1, and re-directed the ambulance (Which had just made a wrong turn) to Ana Purna. The cops were already there, and Kern says he saw them cuff Schube and remove him from the premises. Inside, The paramedics rushed in, and hooked Levi up to a respirator. There was more general commotion, and he was taken to the Hospital. Levi was pronounced dead at 8:30 PM at Jefferson County Hospital. The stabbing, like the assault on Killian, was completely unprovoked.

It seems that Schube approached Levi from behind, stabbed him at least twice while he was sitting down, and then again after he had stood up.

This is a picture of the knife.

Everyone had a clear view of it, it was on the table (Akbar had picked it up off the floor) next to a few drops of blood. Apparently the tip had broken off at some point in the stabbing.

Student arrested for assault, intimidation

A Drexel student was charged with aggravated assault and ethnic intimidation, as well as other charges, for an attack on a 23-year-old Indian man outside the University City Sheraton Hotel at 3456 Chestnut St. Nov. 10.

The incident was first reported in the Nov. 12 issue of the Philadelphia Daily News ("Indian man attacked in University City"). According to the article, Patrick McCall, a 20-year-old student majoring in business administration, allegedly yelled, "You Indians killed my friend" during the 11:54 p.m. attack on the man, Shuvender Sem.

McCall allegedly punched Sem in the face repeatedly and slammed his head against a concrete flower pot, according to University of Pennsylvania Police Deputy Chief of Operations Michael Fink.

Sem was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was treated for his injuries and released.

McCall fled the scene and was arrested about a block away, Fink said. He was also charged with reckless endangerment of another person’s life and simple assault.

McCall was inebriated at the time of the incident, Fink added. He said the attack was a random act, and that there was no known tie between the actor and the victim.

McCall was released after he met 10 percent of his $3,000 bail, the Daily News reported.

The incident is under further investigation by the Southwest Detective Division of the Philadelphia Police.

My mind is destroying itself in the attempt to comprehend what in the nine circles of hell was going through "Shube's" head. I mean, honestly, how can anything be so random in such a wrong way...

You have my condolences. Peace to you and Levi's family.

It's weird reading how schube was randomly assaulted, then how he was later randomly violent. "28 Days Later" immediately came to mind.

If you had asked me a week ago weather I thought something like this was possible I would have told you no way. Makes you kind of wonder if you are really safe around anyone, who here could honestly say that they belive that someone they know would be capable of randomly killing you or one of your friends compleatly unprovoked? and in public no less. I guess I wish I could belive that people have more control over thier actions then this incident seems to show. Makes you wonder who you can really trust, and why you can trust them.

It's never easy when a friend dies. This I know better than most. But to have it happen like this, in what should be a secure setting, just isn't right. Feel free to PM me if you need to talk.

I haven't been able to sift through this entire thread yet, but if it hasn't already been sugested (and you haven't done so yet) you could probably benefit from some counseling and I'm sure it can be made available to you through your school. I would be surprised if they haven't already offered the service to you. In my first year of University, my roommate came home very drunk one day and told me how his best friend back home had died. My rommate had spent the afternoon drinking heavily at the campus pub after he heard the news. I stayed with him and listend for a couple hours while he just talked. Talked about all kinds of things, all I did was listen for the most part. Finally I contacted our floor's residence advisor, who set him up with a professional. I did my best to be there for him, but in the end, the professional help was much better.

in the defense of the extremely mentally ill, I have a friend who returned to my school after suffering a very bad mental breakdown. I'm all for "closely monitoring" but outside of a really bad spell, this guy is alright (and the crap our administration is giving him doesn't help matters). I'm all for second chances, and this shows just how dangerous such exceptions can be.
I'm sorry I couldn't send my condolences back when this thread was new, but I was in vacation in FL. I hope things have attempted to normalize again, with the stress of college and the loss of someone you know, life can be very hellatious.
Again, sorry for the ThreadNecromancy

All I have to give you is my sorrow. I feel for you, and hope the best for your future. Reading this drove me to tears, I could only imagine what being there must've been like. Especially your best friend. Trying to imagine a remotely similar situation is just impossible... I hope you do better.

This Schube character sounds like he really needed help, I can't possibly fathom why they would just let him into public. This is more disturbing than grieving...

But your friend sounded like a really nice guy, really cool. I just hope you move on, and rember good things in place of the bad.

Somehow I managed to miss this topic entirely. I hope you can take this experience for good if thats possible and learn from it. Its similar to my own family. My little brother died from spinal meningitis. Before that my older sister was killed by an exploding tractor...So its ok to greive, and its ok to be sad, but don't let it control you. It will make you a better person someday
