Hm it's either the 'goofy cartoony racing' that's all been done before (pickups, and weapons! yay?) or Need for Speed esque racing that's just new tracks and cars. There's nothing 'innovative' in any of those.
So saying that games suck because they're not innovative: You've basically just said that System Shock was repetative, boring, nothingness. Good job!
Grand Theft Auto? Stolen from the PC! But the fact that one game makes up about 2% marketshare of all console games for a given system (as compared to like 0.001% for computers), the console gamers HAVE to love it, no matter what. And that pisses me off.
When a game sucks for the PC, everyone rants about it. When a game sucks for the console, everyone still loves it, for no god damn reason at all. You think a computer game that REQUIRED you to buy little $100 perephrial systems would succeed? No, it wouldn't. In fact, marketing like that gets a certain company called 'Microsoft' a lot of flak. But oh oh, when NINTENDO does it, everyone lines up to give **** while getting [Bleh] by the cash cow. Consoles might be better in some ways, but they rip you off in every way. I don't hate consoles so much, but with my PC, I can play online without stupid restrictions. I don't need to buy a controller/keyboard, because PC wraps that all in one. I'm not restricted to playing against 3 of my friends, I don't have to pay a extra fee to pay online beacuse it's my current web connection. Playing FPS or an RTS on a Console's ridiculous. But playing something that requires a Joystick on a PC's not to great unless you have a controller hooked up. Because you can't make the small nudge here and there, and you can't tilt your key. Playing anything Adventure, Racing and definatly Fighting on PC isn't great. Memory cards are fun, pay $20 for a Memory Card which can corrupt data. Consoles are great, I was rasied on them. But being an only child, I usually didn't have anyone to play against until the weekends. I have a GameCube now, but I'm probably not going to get much for it. I currently have LoZ:CE and SSB:M coming in the mail and maybe I see Harvest Moon in the future, but those might be the only games I get. There's nothing that looks like it's worth it on Consoles anymore unless it's multi-player. Replay value's don't seem to high anymore. Plus, with PC, you can Mod games which adds TONS of replay value to them. "Kiddy" games are awesome, there's nothing wrong with them. Nothing like having a calming/cheerful stroll through Super Mario: Sunshine as I'm doing now.
It's what I do best! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Oh one more genre to add to the list:
Role Playing Games - Computer wins AGAIN, simply because the limitless capabilities of a computer: Longer storylines, more complex, branching trees you can follow, etc. Console would win for sheer VOLUME, but volume doesn't really mean that it's GOOD... Final Fantasy vs. Deus Ex? Final Fantasy - Linear, hideously boring to me (let's all take turns walking up and hitting each other!). DX - Real action, suspense, good story, and complexity. Baldur's Gate? No contest.
I will admit that consoles are not the end all game systems, but they are more dedicated to gaming then a PC ever will be. Plus I'm seeing a lot more...unique games on the console systems then will ever grace the PC.
a few examples: <a href='http://www.game-revolution.com/games/xbox/action/voodoo_vince.htm' target='_blank'>Voodoo Vince</a> <a href='http://www.game-revolution.com/games/xbox/action/panzer_dragoon_orta.htm' target='_blank'>Panzer Dragoon Orta</a> <a href='http://www.game-revolution.com/games/xbox/action/hunter_reckoning_redeemer.htm' target='_blank'>Hunter: The Reckoning</a> <a href='http://www.game-revolution.com/games/xbox/sports/dead_or_alive_xtreme_beach_volleyball.htm' target='_blank'>Dead Or Alive: XV</a> <a href='http://www.game-revolution.com/games/gamecube/sim/animal_crossing.htm' target='_blank'>Animal Crossing</a> <a href='http://www.game-revolution.com/games/gamecube/adventure/eternal_darkness.htm' target='_blank'>Eternal Darkness</a> <a href='http://www.game-revolution.com/games/gamecube/rpg/legend_of_zelda_wind_waker.htm' target='_blank'>Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker</a>
I dunno about consoles 'losing' on simulation... I've yet to see anything go as far as tekki/steel battallion on the x-box on any platform <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Seriously though... you guys are thinking too hard about it all. "omg I only get 3 hours per $ compared to blah blah blah". I do think the games industry has fallen from grace but like doom said and I've always stood by you just play games. If you're sitting worrying about the costs or talking about the pros and cons of the platforms I think you're missing the point. Sure if you're saving for college/uni or money is genuinely tight then I can see you counting your pennies but otherwise I don't see the point in getting worked up over costs... just buy what you enjoy, there's no pockets in the shroud =3
My carefree approach to cash aside, I think the real reason you get the 'league of console haters' who've not posted here yet (trust me, you'll know a console hate post when you see it ^^; ) is because of 3 factors...
1) learning again: just about all PC-only players can't use joypads. It's a simple and unpleasant fact. They get frustrated because this new-fangled control device forces them to start learning all over again in the control stakes and usually give up shrieking how mouse and keyboard are gods and all games should use them.
2) Image: A lot of people (who we should feel sorry for) still live in the silly mindset that consoles are for kids and PCs are for adults. You'll note this from people referring to consoles as 'toys' or whatnot.
3) Misunderstanding: Something that's always endeared me towards console gaming is the lack of technical fetishes. Most console gaming is about the game. PC-Only gamers will often talk about specs and other such rubbish, especially when trying to devaluate consoles... something that's actually somewhat fool-hardy because they fail to realise the major differences between dedicated and general hardware/software. Just to clear this up actually but Consoles can run games that require a PC 3-5 times more powerful quite happily. This is due to the fact the games are tailored specifically to the console's set hardware (we're talking extreme optimisation), plus the hardware itself only has to focus on running whatever game you're playing. Compared to a PC consoles almost have no background processing to worry about at all =o
All in all, if you're spewing out techinical details or whatever you're off the mark. The only things this thread should be about is <u>gameplay</u>; everything else is just fluff and excuses =3
<b>silly gem edit:</b> after all that I went and forgot one of the biggest reason for anti-consolites lol. Ports/Multiplatform. These games are a disease that needs cleansed from gaming. Because the game is designed to try and run on several platforms rather than just one the gameplay becomes mediocre on all of them. Jumping puzzles are hell on standard PC controls which is why most people hated xen, while in consoles they're not too bad really. The matter of the fact is, games should be designed specifically for whatever platform they're aimed at. Even amongst consoles the layout of the pads can effect the use of the buttons to such a degree I don't really appreciate cross-console releases either =/ Regardless, most Anti-Console people blame consoles for these horrible mutant releases... the problem is that the consoles aren't responsible, it's the publishers. They're so intent on raking in as much cash as possible they'll do it every time they can and people are continually silly enough to encourage them by spending the money.
I'm talking about a <b>lack of innovation</b> in current PC releases. Games can be good without innovation but from a <b>design</b> point of view there seems to be a large lack of innovation in the PC world.
A game doesn't have to be innovative to be good but it helps lots. Of course it goes down to how we describe a successful game. One that sells well? Well if we go by that then System Shock isn't successful. Commertically it was a flop. It may have been a great game but the PC market is unforgiving. Had System Shock 2 come out on a console it may have done a lot better.
There are many factors that make a game good but the main ones are Innovation, Atmosphere and Design. If the game includes these as a group it can be a success. Problem is the PC market are relying on too many "Firm Favorites" as far as titles go. The more innovative titles are rejected on accounts that its a too expensive risk to take. That commercial risk is a lot smaller on a console. Partly because of the set hardware. You don't need to worry about the different makes of graphics card.
Thats one of the reasons console gaming is slightly more enjoyable for me.

My friend's primarily a console gamer and sometimes when I notice something that's a glitch/graphical error/slow down, he doesn't. You learn to cope with it though.
if your friends also play console or have a PC pad they'll no doubt be fine. But a lot of the totally 'anti-console' people often throw in complaints about joypads being rubbish. One of my flatmates had been a die-hard PC player until he moved in. As we smacked him around the arena in soul calibur he'd often scream that it wasn't doing the things he told it to (looking at his fingers I wasn't surprised, he was pressing the buttons all wrong). I've seen it from other PC-only people too. Don't mistake my generalisation for people who don't own consoles either... we're talking who hate consoles. Some of my friends only had PCs but that's because they could just come over to my room if they needed a console fix =3
<b>P.S. edit:</b>oh and I agree with ven; most PC games now can be happily slotted into one of a very select number of genres with little arguement. However, as Geminosity stated, most of the time it seems to be a way of making a quick buck, so they tend to suck.
In my opinion, consoles are the superior pure gaming platform. Its just plug and play really, simple quick and fast to set up. There should be few problems with incompatabilities as all consoles of one type are the same. But then that is pretty much all consoles do, whereas PC's are generalists. Also PC games can have a significantly longer life span due to modding and expansion packs (Half-life anyone? <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> ), there are greater opportunities for customisation, and finally freeware games are avalible to cater for niche genres (<a href='http://www.orbitersim.com' target='_blank'>eg: space sims</a>),
I'm happy with my PC and don't feel the need for a console.
I don't like the idea of pushing the product down my throat just to make me buy it. I almost bought an X-box when I saw that new starcraft game was being released just to x-box. But I diden't. Or those games imported from consoles, stupid controls ect.
I just don't like First Person Shooters on Consoles, trying to aim with a little tiny joystick that's oversensitive. Other than that, games like Devil May Cry, and a variety of Shooter games are way fun that I couldn't imagine being fun on a computer. And alot of the RPGs on consoles are way good, the FF series for example.
Anyways, I just don't like FPS on consoles, and that's about it. Anyone arguing over racing games and such should already know that racing games suck anyways regardless of what system their on, well, except for Road Rash, beating up people on motorcycles <i>is</i> fun.
You can only say PC games lack innovation if you look at some of the large budget titles that get the most publicity. The PC has a large amount of independent developers and mod teams working on their indy games or mods, and you can get innovation, style, and spirit from those games that you wouldn't get from a company like EA because they don't want to take risks.
Where are the PCs' Viewtiful Joe, Gitaroo Man, Ico, Super Monkey Ball, Rez, Animal Crossing, Parappa, Um Jammer, Metroids, Pikmin, repeat repeat repeat? Console gaming will forever be my favourite for gems like these. Apart from the occasional adventure game (rare nowadays) and emulators, the PC has nothing to offer me - well, maybe a brilliant MMORPG, but none have proved good enough so far. If it weren't for this pesky NS, I would've abandoned it a long time ago.
Well, my 2 favorite games, Halo and Natural Selection are on Xbox and PC respectively. I know there are other _good_ games out there, but honestly Halo and NS are the only ones that have kept me interested for over a month, the rest just kind of fade away into wasted money. I have about 10 games that I've spent money on that I didn't enjoy in the first hour and so have never played them again. It seems I never learn my lesson only to buy FPS/TPS. The only games outside of the FPS/TPS genres I've really enjoyed are Final Fantasy VII, Einhander, the Metal Slug series, the Capcom 2D fighting games, and Red Alert 2.
So it simply comes down to the question: Which platform has more and better FPS?
PC.
And I don't know what it is, but I generally favor the more violent and "straight to the point" American games over Japanese games (except the aforementioned ones), and the PC's game library has tons of great American/European games. Can anyone here tell me why the Japanese don't like FPS?

Can any console out there do ALL of that by itself yet? no You cannot upgrade your console you have to buy a whole new one.
How about multiplayer games, dont see to many console games were you can have like 68 or more people in a sever.
No great mod communities for consoles, and first person shooters on a game pad = <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
graphics arnt as good, first person environments arnt as complex on the most part. You cant jump duck, spin around and shoot on a game pad like u can with a mouse and key board.
Sniper rifles in console AHAHAH.
Tap thumb stick left, right oops to far right go back left etc. I laugh at people who try to snipe me in HALO.
Ill give it that consoles have good RPGs. However a FPS PC RPG (morrowind) was console RPG of the year lol. Traditional side scroller RPGS, consoles can win. But you can get emulators to play them in all their glory onto a PC. You cant play neat games in all there glory on a console.
I woudlt say I HATE consoles, its jsut that my PC is far more versatile as a both a gaming an dnon gaming machine. So there is my 2 cents.
if you laugh at people who try to snipe you in halo you'd be laughing at me through a bullet wound in your face =P I snipe people even with the pistol in Halo... whether it be the xbox or PC version. Problem with joypads when it comes to FPS games is the steep learning curve. It took me a while but eventually I could play quake 3 just as well with the DC pad as with a mouse and keyboard. The only trouble was how mind-destroyingly difficult the actual learning itself had been. I spent a good half hour shooting at the ceiling during firefights by accident ^^;
The 'graphics arent as good' thing doesn't really stand up if you ask me... partially because I couldn't give an airborne simian about graphics half the time but also because the graphics on a majority of the console games are more than adequete =P
Emulators are nice but they rarely feel the same, especially due to the joypads.
When it comes to multiplayer... it depends on what you're after. For actual hotseat multiplay consoles just win out right =3 for online... well... for mindless fragfests it's the PC with it's huge number battlefield type games. While for something a bit more social I found PSO to whack the pants off anything the PC had to offer online RPG wise =o
I personally favour the refreshingly madcap antics of the japanese games. FPSes are nice and all but jeeeeez, I've only played several hundred of them already ><
Seriously though... what was EEK's post about? I don't get it... it sounds like one of those emphatic posts someone makes to sound clever when they don't know what they're talking about ~blink~

How many computer games require you to buy extra pieces just play with your friends? <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
lol every post I've seen by you Eek, your ranting on about somthing.
would you even consider the xbox a console? It's practically a computer...well so Is the dreamcast I suppose.
It's Ganon.
No contest.

Even amongst consoles the layout of the pads can effect the use of the buttons to such a degree I don't really appreciate cross-console releases either =/
Regardless, most Anti-Console people blame consoles for these horrible mutant releases... the problem is that the consoles aren't responsible, it's the publishers. They're so intent on raking in as much cash as possible they'll do it every time they can and people are continually silly enough to encourage them by spending the money.
A gamer does not care if it is Console or PC, because they both do their own thing well.
Not a problem for any of the PC Gamers I know.

Exactly. Before I had a PC, I would play games that would slow down to the Max[Conker's Bad Fur Day, Majora's Mask]. But I continued to play because it was fun. After I tweaking games on PC so they ran better, I'm now used to that Luxury and when playing something that tends to slow down a lot, I get really frustrated.
<b>P.S. edit:</b>oh and I agree with ven; most PC games now can be happily slotted into one of a very select number of genres with little arguement. But where does bomberman go? what genre is parapa the rapper? PSO is unlike any RPG I've ever played and the megaman battle network games defy classification ^^;
<!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'll have to agree with Nintendo's Hardware. In SSB:M, you notice when the controller's not good. A quick toss of the stick to the left, it comes back far enough to hit the other direction and turn me around. The C-Stick usually gets stuck Up, so you have to unplug the controller hold down a bit and plug it back in. Twice the L Button became Jump... Jump in SSB:M is either Up, Y or X. L Managed to become one of those... somehow.

Console games: Short, but often a blast while they last. Usually not worth buying, which is why I rent most of mine.
PC games: Generally longer than Console games, but because they're longer they get more repetitive.
Console: Lots and lots of crappy games, with a few awesome ones
PC: Mostly mediocre games, with the occasional good one
PC ports of console games generally suck hard, as do PC games gone console.
The are, of course, exceptions to the above rules.
But I diden't.
Or those games imported from consoles, stupid controls ect.
Anyways, I just don't like FPS on consoles, and that's about it. Anyone arguing over racing games and such should already know that racing games suck anyways regardless of what system their on, well, except for Road Rash, beating up people on motorcycles <i>is</i> fun.
So, to sum it all up:
CONSULEZ SuX0rz 1 |2 73|-| 31337 Pc H4x0rn355 \/\/17 5up|23|\/|3 g|2p|-|1c41|\|355!!!!1111
O <- That's a circle.
Stop running your logic around it.
That's why i've gone on a mass console gamage session lately, I want to justify the £200 I spent, only to see them drop to £150 a week later.
(although that's not as bad as my mate who bought one literally the day before they went down)

It's probably too late now, but at least in my area, you can go back to the store and ask for the difference back (usually in store credit). It's only in the big (and evil, right?) chains that are around.
I hate consoles because theyre more lucrative than PCs, AND I blame it as the sole reason that Fallout 3 was axed.
My PC
= my TV, DVD player, Stereo, connection to the online world, my CD collection, my work machine, banking machine, phone, chat service, drawing tool, etc
Can any console out there do ALL of that by itself yet? no
You cannot upgrade your console you have to buy a whole new one.
I snipe people even with the pistol in Halo... whether it be the xbox or PC version. Problem with joypads when it comes to FPS games is the steep learning curve. It took me a while but eventually I could play quake 3 just as well with the DC pad as with a mouse and keyboard. The only trouble was how mind-destroyingly difficult the actual learning itself had been. I spent a good half hour shooting at the ceiling during firefights by accident ^^;
For actual hotseat multiplay consoles just win out right =3
for online... well... for mindless fragfests it's the PC with it's huge number battlefield type games.
