Installation Help
I'm using: Half-Life
Trying to install: Natural Selection Version 3.0 Beta 1 and Beta 3
Problem with: Steam

I downloaded Steam (Clean Steam, 500 KB approx.) from Steam's Website and installed it. I then downloaded NS V3.0 B1 and it's patch; NS V3.0 B3 and installed them. After I had successfully installed everything, it asked if I wanted to install Half-Life for Steam and I did. It asked me to put my CD key in that I use for my Half-Life so I found my Half-Life CD case and typed in the CD key it asked me for. I tried it both with/without hyphens in my CD key and it will say "Registering CD key with Steam" for about 10 seconds and then a message appears that says "Steam was unable to register your CD key...". I do play the Counter-Strike 1.5 Mod for original Half-Life with this same CD key.

I then looked on Natural-Selection.org and it said to install Steam (Half-Life Steam recommended, 211 MB) so I download Half-Life Steam and it appears to ask me *again* if I want to install Half-Life for Steam as it did in the clean install. I install as directed but again, Steam asks me for my CD key. I type in the CD key from my case again, and I still get the same problem.

I decided to come to the NS forums to try and straighten everything out but it won't let me post in the Tech Support form so I have come here. I've read through the FAQs thoroughly, but could not find my problem. Thanks for the help.

After you installed HalfLife through Steam, did you start the game up as instructed prior to installing NS?

Try unistalling everything STEAM related. Then restart and try installing again. Make sure you start up HL before installing NS. You don't have to play for long just go through the training course for a minute or so. That makes sure you have everything downloaded.

I don't recall, but that could be after you've entered your CD key. If so, repost with an update.

"After you installed HalfLife through Steam..."

That's the problem. It will ask me if I wish to install Half-Life for Steam and when I'd click 'Yes', it would say "Enter your CD key". I can't get in-game using Steam...

Have you ever played the standard HL tutorial mission on the install of HL/Steam you're trying to run NS? If not, do that. Just launch bootcamp and then quit, then try installing Steam.

I recomend going to http://www.steampowered.com/ and visit its forums there. The stickied threads there contain a lot of usefull information for these kind of problems, conserning CD keys.

To update you all on my little escapade; I had e-mailed Mr. Sherman (support for Steam) my little CD key problem and it's been about 2-3 days and I haven't gotten a reply. I've noticed that this CD key problem is a pretty big epidemic among Steam. People who buy legit software, such as I, have to suffer from the errors of a big mistake that none of us "CD key problem people" have countrol over. I know that Mr. Sherman gets 100's of e-mails a day about random problems, but if he's getting overwhelmed with e-mails, get someone else to do it. It seems like Mr. Sherman hasn't responded to just my e-mail, but a handful of other peoples' e-mail as well. American Customer Service has gone straight down the shitter now-a-days.

My e-mail lay un-answered for a week. My follow-up-emails too.

I finally contacted Sherman using PM on the forums. The day after, I had it fixed. Try that.

    You did it wrong.

Uninstall your NS from your steam, and then run threw the HL training course once. THEN install NS. NS installed itself to the wrong folder the first time
